  3. “Color” is more than just a design element. It is a profound language that bridges emotions and experiences, allowing artists to create evocative messages that resonate on a deeper level. It is a vital component in the toolkit of any creative professional. Accurate monitors like the ViewFinity S9 provide artists with the ability to see and express color accurately across various mediums, granting them total control over their artwork. This ensures that the final products are aligned with the artist’s original intent. OIMU Studio, a design powerhouse in Korea, believes that design should act as a “connector.” Their work forges links between the values of the past and present, and between Eastern and Western traditions. Through various projects, including the renowned “Color,” “Nobang” and “Match” projects, OIMU provides these connections to their audience, blending cultural traditions and offering a fresh and modern perspective to elements of the past. In this second installment of the ViewFinity S9 Story series, Samsung Newsroom sat down with Sohyun Shin of OIMU Studio to explore her inspirations and find out how ViewFinity S9 has become a vital tool in her artistic pursuit. ▲ Sohyun Shin, Founder and Chief Designer of OIMU Established in 2015, OIMU is a lifestyle brand and design studio known for bridging cultural differences and reinterpreting nostalgic objects with a modern flair. Led by Sohyun Shin, the studio boasts with portfolio of projects that connect various traditional Korean elements with contemporary aesthetics. Q. Could you briefly introduce OIMU to our readers? OIMU is a lifestyle brand and design studio, dedicated to celebrating and promoting the cultural values and traditions of Korea through design and content. We are involved in publishing, exhibitions and products as well. One of our most well-known work is the “Color” project, which created over 350 unique color names in Korean. We aim to reinterpret Korea’s rich cultural heritage through design. Q. Can you tell us about your recent project using the ViewFinity S9? The “Color” project began with a goal to develop unique color names, typically in foreign languages, in Korean. Recently, we made 100 color name cards for a brand exhibition. As these unique set of colors had precise CMYK values, it was important to express the colors as accurately as possible, to highlight those subtle and nuanced differences. The ViewFinity S9 monitor helped us match our print values to our digital designs, and we were able to prepare the final print as intended. ※ CMYK: A color model used in color printing with four ink plates: cyan, magenta, yellow and key (in many cases, black). Outside of the “Color” project, we also work with many delicate illustrations, which can appear blurry and unclear at places like print shops with ordinary monitors. ViewFinity S9, in contrast, presented images with outstanding clarity, allowing us to confidently move on with the card designs. I recently underwent LASIK surgery to improve my eyesight. If prior monitors reminded me of my sight before LASIK, the ViewFinity S9 felt like seeing with improved vision after! It has undoubtedly been a transformative tool. Q. What is the most important factor when selecting a monitor? Much of OIMU’s work, like any design studio, require attention to details. So, high resolution is essential. High resolution monitors allow us to be more intuitive and help us work on intricate designs by showing the subtle differences in colors and details. Data processing is key in ensuring that physical prints turn out high-quality. ViewFinity S9 significantly reduces the margin of error during this process. When comparing digital and physical prints, you’ll find them nearly identical. In essence, ViewFinity S9 helps us create higher quality designs. Q. What are your favorite features of ViewFinity S9? There were reflections when we were using ordinary monitors, forcing us to use blinds. With ViewFinity’s Matte Display, reflections are minimized and colors are accurate even in sunlight. Now, I can work while enjoying the view and natural light. Our studio has many windows, so, monitor glare is unavoidable. I like to work with the view of nature. ViewFinity S9 minimizes glares and reflections, so I can accurately check the colors even when it is bright outside. Q. How else did ViewFinity S9 change your work environment? Color temperature is another important aspect in our line of work. With ViewFinity’s Smart Calibration feature,1 we can calibrate precise onscreen colors without additional and often expensive equipment. Also, ViewFinity S9 is great when I want to take a break from work, since I can watch my favorite shows on OTT streaming apps.2 I also just love this cute remote control. Q. Would you recommend ViewFinity S9 to other designers? Designers spend countless hours in front of monitors. To me, ViewFinity S9 stands as an optimal choice for both eye comfort and faithful expression of images and color. If you are a creative professional seeking a premium display, you won’t be disappointed with ViewFinity S9. 1 Smart Calibration enables users to conveniently customize the ViewFinity S9’s screen for precise settings — including color temperature, luminance, color space and gamma settings — using their smartphones, without expensive, complex calibration equipment. 5. Gaming monitors are one of the most powerful tools for esports players, especially when it comes to notching up the gaming experience through wider viewing angles and faster refresh rates. This year marks the third anniversary of the partnership between Samsung Electronics and T1, a South Korean esports team with a series of championship wins under its belt. Since 2020, Samsung has been providing T1 with Odyssey gaming monitors to showcase the company’s cutting-edge technology to gamers and audiences alike. ▲ The Odyssey Neo G9 57” (G95NC) and T1 team (from left: ‘Keria’, ‘Gumayusi’, ‘Faker’, ‘Oner,’ and ‘Zeus’) To celebrate the release of the 2023 gaming monitor lineup, Samsung unveiled a series of three brand videos featuring the 57-inch Odyssey Neo G9, the 49-inch Odyssey OLED G9 (G95SC) and the upgraded 55-inch Odyssey Ark (G97NC). These films were produced by renowned South Korean director Yunsung Kang — most known for “The Outlaws” (2017), “Long Live the King” (2019) and “Big Bet” (2022). In a modern-meets-medieval battle adventure, viewers can follow the T1 team and watch how Samsung gaming monitors play a shocking twist. Samsung Newsroom sat down with Director Yunsung Kang and T1 members ‘Keria’, ‘Gumayusi’, ‘Faker’, ‘Oner’ and ‘Zeus’ to learn more about their behind-the-scenes experience. ▲ ‘Faker’ experiences the Odyssey Neo G9 57”. Q. What are your thoughts on the new Odyssey models? ‘Faker’: The Odyssey monitors just keep getting better. The new 57-inch Odyssey Neo G9 is truly impressive with its massive screen that commands attention. I didn’t realize its size from a distance, but I fully grasped its scale when I got closer. The Odyssey Neo G9 is the ideal choice for those who prefer a larger monitor. ‘Oner’: The Odyssey OLED G9 is so large that it almost resembles a TV, rather than a typical monitor. This could also be useful when watching videos. ‘Zeus’: All of the monitors boast huge dimensions. The ultra-wide screen helps me play League of Legends strategically, offering a wide view of the map and an incredibly immersive gaming experience. ▲ ‘Faker’ and ‘Oner’ from T1 practice gaming on the Odyssey OLED G9. ▲ (From left) ‘Gumayusi’ and ‘Keria’ from T1 try out Multi View on the 2023 Odyssey Ark. Q. As a gamer, what is your top priority when choosing a monitor? ‘Faker’: Most gamers value response time and refresh rate. I prefer a monitor with a fast response time to minimize ghosting. ‘Oner’: Refresh rate is the most important factor for me. I always check whether a monitor supports a 240Hz refresh rate. ‘Keria’: Although I use a monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate, monitors with 144Hz or higher refresh rates are sufficient for most users. ‘Gumayusi’: Unlike some gamers, I’m not very sensitive to monitor specifications. However, since I’m used to high refresh rates, switching to low-quality specs could hinder my skills. I want to focus solely on the game itself. ‘Zeus’: I agree with ‘Oner’ — refresh rate is crucial for me too. I used to have a monitor with a 60Hz refresh rate, but the gaming experience was so much smoother once I switched to one with a higher refresh rate. I can’t imagine going back to a low-refresh rate monitor now. Yoonsung Kang, the director behind the 2021 Odyssey Neo G9 brand film, has returned to work on the 2023 Odyssey brand films. ▲ Yoonsung Kang has directed many Odyssey brand films. Q. What was your main objective when planning this Odyssey brand film? Yoonsung Kang: My top priority for this project was to focus on the monitors’ immense size. As such, I planned a concept around a large-scale medieval battle to effectively showcase the Odyssey’s advantages. Q. Can you share some of the highlights from this brand film? Kang: One of the standout moments in these videos is the unexpected plot twist. The story follows the T1 team changing the course of a battle — then, a twist unfolds. Just when the members believe they won the battle, ‘Faker’ expands the screen to reveal more enemies approaching from both sides. It’s a plot twist that’s bound to captivate viewers. ▲ Excerpts from the Odyssey brand film starring the T1 team, with ‘Faker’ shown on the right ▲ ‘Faker’ from T1 on the production site for the new Odyssey brand film. ▲ ‘Zeus’ (left) and ‘Oner’ (right) from T1 show off the choreography used in the brand film. ▲ ‘Gumayusi’ (left) and ‘Keria’ (right) participate in the Odyssey brand filming. ▲ The T1 members learn choreography during filming. Q. What was it like to step away from your usual game matches and daily training to participate in this brand film? ‘Oner’, ‘Zeus’ and ‘Keria’: We were truly impressed that the choreography incorporated our signature poses. While we were worried at first — we’re not dancers — the choreographer’s detailed directions helped us finish the project successfully. I hope our fans enjoy the videos. ‘Faker’: All in all, it was a new and refreshing experience. I’ve been on TV shows with numerous cameras before, but this was my first time dancing. I felt a bit awkward yet excited at the same time. ▲ The Odyssey Neo G9 57” and T1 members (from left: ‘Keria’, ‘Gumayusi’, ‘Faker’, ‘Oner’ and ‘Zeus’) Q. Out of the Odyssey monitors you’ve had the chance to try out, which one is your favorite? ‘Faker’: My favorite is the 49-inch Odyssey OLED G9. I like its fast response time and sleek metal design on the back. ‘Zeus’: The 49-inch Odyssey OLED G9 is my top pick as well. The Infinity Core lighting displays mesmerizing rainbow colors, and the metal design gives the monitor a chic vibe. ‘Keria’: For me, the 57-inch Odyssey Neo G9 is the most appealing — the white and glossy back cover feels luxurious. ‘Gumayusi’: I’ve already used the Odyssey Ark at T1 HQ’s lounge and enjoyed the Multi View feature since I like to play multiple games simultaneously. Because I prefer large screens, my top choice is the 57-inch Odyssey Neo G9. ‘Oner’: It’s honestly difficult to pick just one. The new Odyssey models are amazing with their large screens and wide displays. I like them all. Shin Baik, Engineer of Security Team, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, emphasized the need for comprehensive security solutions in an expansive and highly connected device network. “It’s time to look beyond today’s solutions and start building a better-protected future,” he said. Baik spotlighted the company’s proprietary security innovations containing the latest features. These include: Samsung Knox Matrix — which comes with updates to Credential Sync — enabling end-to-end encryption to backup or restore data on the Samsung Cloud. If a server is compromised or account details are stolen, user data is protected as data can only be encrypted or decrypted through the user’s device. Mobile devices with One UI 6 will have access to passkeys — a digital credential technology that uses biometric recognition as authentication on websites and applications — marking a significant step towards a password-less future. Beyond flagship mobile devices, Samsung Knox Vault is being expanded to Samsung Neo QLED 8K TVs in 2023, and Galaxy A series smartphones that launch with One UI 6 or later2 in 2024 — protecting more customers and their devices. Tizen Reboot: Paving the Path for the Decade Ahead Hobum Kwon, Vice President of Platform Team at Samsung Research, unveiled advancements to Tizen, Samsung’s Linux-based open-source operating system, and how the company is rebooting it for a new generation of devices. “We’re always thinking of how to expand the Tizen Ecosystem — and as a result, the platform has a reliable and adaptable architecture built on our commitment to open innovation,” he said. Recently, Samsung expanded Tizen to operate on new home appliances with larger displays, such as washing machines and ovens, to enrich the user experience by providing graphic information, convenient UI and useful video content. Alongside the expansion of applicable product lines, Samsung will boost developer support through a unified Tizen Software Development Kit (SDK) that includes a 2D and 3D combined graphics engine and a new Samsung Experience Services feature. Tizen Screen: Your Window to a World of Possibilities Bongjun Ko, Executive Vice President of Application Software R&D Group, Visual Display (VD) Business, revealed how Samsung is elevating the Tizen TV experience for users in their day-to-day lives. “Whether it’s through a TV or smartphone while you wait for your train, these screens are part of our daily lives,” he said. “This is why we, at Samsung, are always innovating to deliver best-in-class experiences with Tizen, starting with the biggest screens in your home.” Ko shared that Samsung Gaming Hub is now available on a variety of Tizen-supported screens such as The Freestyle 2nd Gen and Odyssey Neo G9 as well as 2022 and 2023 Samsung Smart TVs. Taking social interaction to new heights, Chat Together connects users with friends in chat rooms while they are watching their favorite shows, movies and sports. What’s more, the platform is adding Relumino Mode to Samsung TVs to create a more accessible and immersive viewing experience for those with low vision. Tizen is opening its doors to a broader ecosystem of partners and developers, offering robust support and a dynamic environment to revolutionize how people connect, play and interact via screens. Expanding the Galaxy Experience With One UI 6 One of the main highlights was the reveal of One UI 6, a transformative user experience designed for Galaxy devices. Sally Hyesoon Jeong, Vice President of Framework R&D Group, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, introduced this innovative upgrade, focusing on enhanced usability and intelligent photo and video editing. One UI 6 includes a fresh, intuitive look and feel with a revamped Quick panel, redesigned app interfaces and a stylish, exclusive typeface: One UI Sans. Additionally, One UI 6 will analyze photos in the Gallery using AI features — such as Photo Remaster and Object Eraser — to suggest the most relevant editing options, helping users enhance their photos quickly and more precisely. Likewise, with Samsung Studio and its multi-layer video editing features, users have greater control when editing their content to freely add effects such as text, stickers and music with the video editing timeline. Jeong also announced the highly anticipated Galaxy SmartTag2. With a compact design, improved battery life and IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, the SmartTag2 is set to redefine how users keep track of their belongings — giving more people greater peace of mind. Building a Digital Health Ecosystem Through Connected Care at Home Hon Pak, Vice President of Digital Health Team, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, highlighted the importance of fostering strong connections among devices, data, consumers and services for more optimized digital health experiences. “Our vision for Samsung Health is to build a healthier future for everyone,” he said. “It starts from the same place where many of you started your day today — at home.” Samsung’s vision is recognized through strategic partnerships aimed at strengthening the digital health ecosystem. Samsung Privileged Health SDK provides access to the Samsung BioActive Sensor, giving partners increased flexibility to develop powerful, health-sensing capabilities in their applications. Samsung Research launched Samsung Health Stack 1.0 to support researchers with critical tools to advance their studies. The App SDK included in Samsung Health Stack 1.0 provides developers with the building blocks to streamline participant data collection, and Web portal provides researchers with a dashboard to monitor and manage research progress in an organized and easily readable way. Additionally, Samsung partnered with the MIT Media Lab to focus on cutting-edge research in sleep and mental health monitoring. Together, they will develop novel, scientifically validated and accessible solutions that help people sleep better and improve their health, well-being and daytime performance. The collaboration highlights Samsung’s commitment to bolstering the wellness industry and enhancing the lives of users. Savoring the Future of Cooking With Food AI Nick Holzherr, CEO of Whisk, Head of Samsung Food Platform, expressed how new AI-enabled customer experiences will help people not only eat better but also make “Food Your Way.” Samsung Food makes it easier for users to share their favorite dishes with the community and follow their favorite food content creators. With the app, users can explore new levels of customization and convenience in the kitchen, from grocery shopping and personalized recipe recommendations to automated cooking settings. “Over the coming year, we’ll continue to grow our device connectivity across Samsung’s appliances, watches and phones,” he said. “I’m super excited about how we can bring software and hardware together to create value for our Samsung customers!” Smarter Living, Every Day To close out the presentation, JH Han returned to the stage to offer a final word on the company’s vision for the future of hyper-connected living. 10. Throughout their years of collaboration, Samsung Art Store and Tate have worked together to make art more accessible to consumers worldwide. As a result, users of The Frame can put works from Tate’s extensive collection on display within their own homes. The two have worked together since 2018 to leverage the Art Store platform to bring culture into the homes of users around the world, and to enrich users’ lives. ▲ Tate Britain Samsung Newsroom sat down with Rosey Blackmore, Licensing and Merchandise Director at Tate, to discuss technology’s impact on our art experiences and on art accessibility, among other topics. Read on to find out more. Years of Collaboration Bringing Art Into the Home Q: Tell us a bit about your role at Tate and your experience working with Samsung Art Store. I’m responsible for our licensing and merchandise at Tate, where our team creates and licenses products featuring art from Tate’s collection. Our gallery spaces are free to visit, and all income that we generate helps make that possible, so it’s a very satisfying role. We’ve been really delighted to work with Samsung on their Art Store. Our mission at Tate is to enable the public to enjoy art, so this project contributes to that. As the Art Store has grown in popularity, we have been really interested to see which images are the most viewed, and to refresh and add new art to the selection available in light of those trends we see. Q: How are pieces from the Tate’s expansive collection chosen for The Frame? It’s difficult, as we have so many to choose from! There are more than 80,000 works in Tate’s collection, but we try and select those that we feel people will enjoy living with, as well as some that are very familiar. Q: Have you noticed any interesting trends over the years in what pieces users are most attracted to in Samsung’s Art Store? Yes, we really have. For example, one of the most popular works is Arenig, North Wales by James Dickson Innes, who isn’t a very well- known artist, but this is a particularly gorgeous work of a mountain viewed from across a lake and has beautiful violet hues. So, I imagine it brings a sense of calm to those who choose to display it on The Frame. ▲ Arenig, North Wales by James Dickson Innes Engaging a Diverse Audience Through Art Q: What work has Tate done recently to build upon its vision to engage diverse audiences and help develop individual creative potential? Why is this part of Tate’s mission? Engaging a more diverse audience is absolutely at the heart of the work that we are doing at Tate. It’s something that we are passionate about because it reflects our belief that art enriches lives, and that everyone has the right to that experience. For many years now, we have been ensuring that the art we collect and exhibit represents as diverse a range of backgrounds and experiences as possible. At Tate Modern, 50% of our program features art created by women, and at Tate Britain the same is true of our contemporary displays and exhibitions. Because of our fundamental belief that art enriches lives, Tate also offers an extensive range of free family programs throughout the year, aimed at encouraging children to be creative Q: In your opinion, how has Tate leveraged The Frame and Art Store to further support its mission for engaging an inclusive and diverse audience? We love that Samsung’s Art Store enables more people to access our collection and broadens the number of people enjoying art. And, perhaps some will become curious about the artworks they are seeing and choose to find out more about them too. That directly supports our mission to encourage both the enjoyment and understanding of art across diverse audiences. Q: Out of the works of art selected for the Art Store, which three would you recommend users display on The Frame? My first suggestion of the three artworks from the Art Store would be the very beautiful Abstract Composition by Jessica Dismorr, for its subtle and calm color palette. ▲ Abstract Composition by Jessica Dismorr The second would be Blue House on the Shore by Paul Nash, as it’s a wonderfully enigmatic and romantic image. ▲ Blue House on the Shore by Paul Nash And finally, a very personal choice which is Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose by John Singer Sargent, as this is a painting that I’ve loved since I first visited Tate as a teenager, and I still find it as extraordinary now as I did then. When you walk into the gallery where the picture hangs, the painted lanterns somehow seem to light the room, and The Frame would recreate that magical experience. ▲ Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose by John Singer Sargent Leveraging Technology To Enhance Human Experiences Q: In what ways has Tate leveraged technology to provide an enhanced visitor experience at the museum? A good example is ‘Tate Draw’ where children can use special software and screens in the galleries to create their own artworks inspired by Tate’s collection, with their finished designs projected on the walls. Technology is expanding the ways in which we can all be creative. Q: Do you anticipate any implications that technology will have on the art world? Technology is undoubtedly affecting all aspects of our lives, and we need to embrace it. There’s no doubt that technological advancements will have profound effects on the way that we access and experience art. Tate is always considering how we can reduce the carbon footprint of our activities— technology may offer interesting opportunities for this in the future, such as digital experiences of art rather than shipping the original artworks. Q: Are there any upcoming events or special activities Tate has planned that you can tell us about? Tate’s exhibition programme always strives to offer a diverse range of content and this autumn is no exception! At Tate Britain, women are taking centre-stage with a major survey exhibition of the humorous and irreverent work of Sarah Lucas as well as a group show exploring the radical work of feminist artists working in Britain during the 1970s and 80s. ▲ Tate Modern At Tate Modern, artists from across the African continent are a key focus, with this year’s annual new commission for the gallery’s iconic Turbine Hall being created by Ghanian artist El Anatsui. A major survey of contemporary photography by artists working across Africa and its diaspora remains on show until the new year, joined by a retrospective of Philip Guston, one of the most influential and important American painters of the 20th century. ▲ Tate Liverpool Down at Tate St Ives, visitors can continue to enjoy a revelatory group exhibition exploring the experimental paintings made by artists working in Casablanca during the 1960s and 70s, while Tate Liverpool will embark on an exciting new program in collaboration with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The partnership will see a range of new exhibitions and events staged at RIBA’s building at Mann Island in Liverpool during the gallery’s temporary closure period for redevelopment, due to be completed in autumn 2025. ▲ Tate St. Ives Visit Samsung Art Store in The Frame to see more of Tate’s collection. What motivated you to participate in the Samsung SmartThings campaign? When the Galaxy Z Flip was first released, I remember being impressed by its design — which led me to buy a Galaxy smartphone right away and switch both my tablet and watch to Galaxy devices. As a Galaxy fan, I love how my Galaxy products are all connected, allowing me to do things like check workout progress or calories burned on my phone or tablet while I’m exercising. Naturally, I was excited when Samsung approached me to participate in this campaign. Q. What is the best thing about using SmartThings? SmartThings has become a feature I really need. By connecting the two devices to the SmartThings app and synchronizing the video output with a photo of the projected screens, users can enjoy a full-screen experience from anywhere. “Edge-blending is a sophisticated technology that usually requires dedicated hardware and software to manually control each pixel,” said Seongwon Seo. “In line with the easy-to-use concept of The Freestyle, we engineered Smart Edge Blending to help first-time users easily blend screens wirelessly, without a dedicated device or help from an expert.” ▲ Smart Edge Blending can be used through the SmartThings app. When Smart Edge Blending is activated, the connected smartphone will engage with The Freestyle portable projectors in real time. Content sync and adjustment processes take place automatically via communication between the devices. “Screen alignment can easily be done using the SmartThings guide when a user captures a picture of the projected screen. The analytic algorithm will analyze the span and overlap of the patterns at eight main points on the setup screen and then adjust the projection on each device,” he explained. ▲ The Freestyle 2nd Gen with Smart Edge Blending on display at IFA 2023 Smart Edge Blending was born out of user pattern analysis. “We found that consumers tend to use The Freestyle as a highly portable personal screen in whatever space they are in — whereas the living room TV would be for fixed, communal use. In fact, there were many cases where single households would purchase several projectors,” said TJ Kim. “When you have more than one device, why not combine them?” By connecting The Freestyle devices, users can enlarge their screen by up to 160 inches and enjoy a 21:9 screen ratio with no further manual adjusting. Speaker capacity is doubled and intensified with the choice of dedicating the left and right stereo sound output to each device to create a more immersive audio experience. ▲ (From left) TJ Kim from Future Planning Group and Seongwon Seo from Picture Quality Solution Lab “What’s charming about Smart Edge Blending is that it can be expanded not just horizontally but vertically as well,” said Seo. “This feature is even more useful with the rise of vertical content such as Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. Most consumers are used to viewing ultra-large horizontal content at movie theaters but are not quite familiar with ultra-large vertical content. But it’s actually quite nice once you try it.” Nonetheless, there were challenges during development. The original plan was to only support still images, since video requires extensive computing power and real-time alignment. In early stages, the setup also required a high-resolution picture of the projection as well. ▲ Seongwon Seo from Picture Quality Solution Lab explains how the complex Smart Edge Blending technology was built for anyone. “It is an extremely difficult task to get two wireless devices to continuously be in sync. While The Freestyle development first started with still images, we couldn’t give up on videos because that’s what more consumers prefer watching with our device. Using a wire to hook up the devices was unthinkable given the highly mobile concept of The Freestyle. We supported the engineers until, one day, they managed to achieve the unthinkable,” said TJ Kim. “Writing an algorithm that can analyze low-resolution images is a very demanding task — but we felt a sense of relief when we finally succeeded,” he added. “At first, it seemed impossible to minimize the margin of error between the two projections. The strict internal standard doesn’t even allow a single-pixel margin of error. Our breakthrough ultimately resulted from an assumption model that could accurately determine the state of projected setup patterns from low-resolution pictures.” Staying True to Concept While Adding Fun Through Samsung Gaming Hub, The Freestyle 2nd Gen supports gaming — a content form that was once unimaginable to enjoy on a portable projector. The addition of Samsung’s cloud gaming platform frees users from the limitations of consoles, wires and fixed screens such as smart TVs and monitors. “Gaming is one of the entertainment types that really highlights the portability of The Freestyle,” shared TJ Kim. “Users can now enjoy games through Samsung Gaming Hub anytime and anywhere, without a console.” ▲ Visitors at Samsung’s IFA 2023 booth test cloud games available on Samsung Gaming Hub with The Freestyle 2nd Gen. Updates were made for added sustainability. “The light source life has been extended from 20,000 to 30,000 hours,” said Wonki Kim. “With 30,000 hours, The Freestyle can support a demanding eight hours of use per day for 10 years.” The Freestyle’s remote control was also upgraded to a SolarCell Remote that can be charged with sunlight or indoor lighting, eliminating the need for disposable batteries. Processing speed was revamped too. Compared to the first model, The Freestyle 2nd Gen’s memory has been expanded to speed up signal processing and remote control response. By testing usage scenarios during development, the device’s UI and UX were improved immensely to make the projector accessible to anyone. ▲ Wonki Kim from Lifestyle Team underscores compactness, portability and usability as the reasons behind the popularity of The Freestyle among young people. Screens Everywhere as a Strategy With the vision of “Screens Everywhere, Screens for All,” The Freestyle 2nd Gen prioritizes portability and mobility to enable users to experience the benefits of a movable screen. “Although it’s clearly a hassle to set up, the tripod has become such a natural part projectors — so much that no one thought twice about it,” said TJ Kim. “We envision a projector without a tripod or other accessories. That’s how The Freestyle 2nd Gen came to life.” ▲ The Freestyle 2nd Gen on display in a caravan at IFA 2023 The creators behind The Freestyle continue to dream. “As we work to achieve ‘Screens Everywhere, Screens for All,’ we’re constantly planning innovations around Samsung’s projector lineup — The Freestyle and The Premiere. Our goal is to move beyond simply targeting the existing market and present a new screen experience for everyone,” shared Wonki Kim. “We plan to continue addressing the limitations of space and strengthen connections among various Samsung devices to generate meaningful synergy,” added TJ Kim. 21. Samsung Electronics today showcased its latest innovations for the connected home. During its IFA 2023 press conference, the company highlighted its vision for SmartThings is to enable consumers across Europe to prioritise the topics they care about — from saving energy, increasing security and access to great entertainment to making their everyday lives more efficient. The ever-growing SmartThings ecosystem allows its 285 million users to adapt and personalise their homes to suit their needs, seamlessly connecting and controlling multiple appliances and devices via one app. Samsung’s presence at IFA 2023 comes as the company shares new consumer research, conducted across Europe to understand evolving needs for technology in the home.1 “Samsung is passionate about connecting our users to the people, places and pastimes that matter most to them,” said Benjamin Braun, Chief Marketing Officer, Samsung Europe. “We will continue to take advantage of the possibilities offered by the latest innovations in technology to make sure the SmartThings ecosystem grows and develops in a way that allows people to make even more of the connections that matter.” Enhancing the At-Home Experience The SmartThings app allows users to control their homes from anywhere, helping them to enjoy seamless entertainment as well as keeping them safe. Across Europe, our homes continue to be more important than ever as they play multiple roles each day — from offices to places for relaxation and entertainment. Seven in ten consumers (71%) agree that technology has a positive impact on their everyday living, including how they interact with their friends and family, how they conduct their chores and how they enjoy their hobbies.¹ Now, those with a passion for food can fully connect themselves to the joy of cooking and eating with Samsung Food, the new all-in-one app for recipe searching, saving and sharing, meal planning, cooking and grocery shopping. Announced at the press conference, Samsung Food is available in 104 countries and eight languages and puts the world’s food knowledge at users’ fingertips, empowering them to make the food, health and cooking decisions that are right for them. It also connects to users’ kitchens, instantly sending the right time and temperature to their compatible Samsung oven. With more than 160,000 recipes, there will always be something new to cook. By the end of the year, using Food AI, Samsung Food will provide personalised recipes reflecting users’ dietary requirements, such as converting recipes into a vegan version in just a few taps. In a further enhancement due later this year, it will link with Samsung Health so tailored meal plans can be adapted to suit preferences and dietary requirements, as well as support users in reaching their health goals. In 2024, using Vision AI technology, Samsung Food will use photos taken of meals to check nutritional information, recognise ingredients and recommend the best recipes to use them in. As the number one TV brand for 17 years in a row,2 Samsung has an unrivalled commitment to entertainment. It has completed its super screen line up with the launch of the 98” Neo QLED 8K and 4K Q80C and plans to bring its full range of Micro LED screens to Europe by the end of the year, offering incredible contrast and jaw-dropping detail that places viewers in the middle of the action whether gaming or watching films. To celebrate Disney’s 100th anniversary, Samsung has announced the launch of The Frame — Disney100 Edition. Featuring an exclusive bezel in the Disney 100 signature platinum silver metal and a unique Mickey Mouse inspired Disney remote. It also comes with 100 pieces of iconic art from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel, Lucasfilm and National Geographic, as well as classic images of Mickey, Minnie, Woody, Cinderella and many others. Users can also display their family photos for a magical home environment. Also announced at the press conference was the global launch of The Freestyle 2nd Gen. This versatile, portable projector delivers a big screen experience wherever the user chooses — even on the ceiling. The Smart Edge Blending feature offers landscape and portrait screen experiences, meaning two Freestyle 2nd Gen projectors can be paired to give a 160” panoramic and 120” vertical viewing experience. What is more, with complete access to the Samsung Gaming Hub, users of the Freestyle 2nd Gen can enjoy the biggest games from Samsung’s streaming partners. In partnership with Xbox and Bethesda Softworks, this now includes Starfield, the stunning, next-generation role-playing game set amongst the stars. Playable through the Samsung Gaming Hub with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership, without the need for a console. Taking Small Steps for Our Planet Samsung is committed to developing products and services that help people save money and take steps towards a better planet. These topics are high on the agenda for consumers too, over three quarters (77%) say they seek out tech products that save energy — not only to save money, but for the benefit of the environment too.4 Two-thirds (67%) also consider it important that their next appliance can connect to an app that allows them to monitor and reduce their energy consumption.4 With energy prices increasing across Europe,3 72% of those asked are concerned about the cost of running appliances in their home.4 To help combat this, SmartThings Energy can help users optimise the energy used across their appliances to suit their needs and lower usage. For example, AI Energy Mode in SmartThings Energy allows you to monitor and reduce your washing machine’s energy use by up to 70%5 by using Ecobubble to wash with cool water instead of warm. Samsung has also partnered with global ocean conservation organisation Ocean Wise and apparel maker Patagonia to find solutions to the issue of microfiber shedding. The Less Microfiber Filter is an external washing machine filter that cuts up to 98% of microplastic emissions from laundry cycles.6 Speaking at IFA, Charlie Cox, Manager of Microplastic Solutions at Ocean Wise said, “Through our collaboration with Samsung and Patagonia, Ocean Wise is proud to have shown a way for industry to play its part in stemming the flow of microfibers into the ocean. Through innovations like the Less Microfiber Filter, we can empower individuals to reduce their microfiber footprint at home. It is a simple, everyday solution that our oceans will thank us for.” Heating technologies like heat pumps represent a rapidly growing market, and Samsung is at the forefront of this growth. Its innovative smart air source heat pumps have seen an unprecedented 97% growth in sales since 2022.7 These work with domestic hot water tanks or with Samsung’s ClimateHub, to make your home comfortable all year round, whatever the weather. They can also connect to the SmartThings ecosystem, so their energy use can be monitored and tailored to the user’s preferred environment.8 The latest addition to its range of high temperature monobloc heat pump solutions, the EHS Mono R290, launches in September. Samsung’s journey is constantly evolving as it aims to design technology that helps people make the most of their day while taking small steps to reduce our environmental impact. The Galaxy Z Flip59 and Z Fold510 and the Galaxy Tab S9 series11 feature a variety of recycled materials, including recycled aluminium, glass and plastics sourced from ocean-bound discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles. Even the Galaxy Watch6 series incorporate post-consumer recycled plastics. All of these Galaxy innovations come in packaging boxes made using recycled paper material.12 Keeping Your Home Secure Samsung understands the reassurance that smart technology can provide across the generations. Security was an emerging theme from the research conducted. Watching their home while they aren’t there (54%), feeling safer when home alone (39%) and keeping their family safe when they are out of the house (39%) are seen as the key safety benefits of smart technology.13 The SmartThings ecosystem includes a range of partners who are committed to helping people keep their homes and loved ones safe. This now includes Yale, a leading brand in home security. The Yale Linus® Smart Lock and the new Smart Opener for Gate & Garage enable doors and gates to be locked remotely via the app to ensure peace of mind for all family members. Unlocking the Future Through Smart Technology Samsung is invested in a future built around the possibilities that technology can unlock. One area it aims to make a difference is in making the technology for smart homes more easily available. The research shows a quarter of Europeans consider the inclusion of smart technology to be a key factor in the desirability of their next home and over three quarters of respondents said fully functional smart homes are appealing (77%).12 Understanding this, Samsung is working to make these possibilities a reality and it believes in the power of collaboration when it comes to driving this vision forward. By partnering with ABB Smart Buildings and SMA, one of the world’s leading providers of photovoltaic and storage system technology, it hopes to connect people more closely to their homes by embedding the possibilities of smart technology into houses before they are bought. By integrating ABB and SMA products into SmartThings Energy, homes can become even safer, smarter and more sustainable. For example, the ability to run appliances at the optimum time, tracking energy use to adjust consumption based on energy prices and usage patterns and optimising energy use based on solar production. 1 Conducted in conjunction with Opinium amongst 2,500 adults from the U.K., France, Germany, Spain and Italy.
