Samsung-TVs-1st-Place-for-15-Yrs-Pt-1_ma

From black and white to color, analog to digital, and digital to smart TVs—Samsung Electronics has been there for all the key historic moments in the development of the television. Over time, Samsung has established itself as a global television leader by applying innovative technologies and staying a step ahead when it comes to identifying global lifestyle trends.

And Samsung’s innovation hasn’t slowed in 2021. Even in the unprecedented era of the global pandemic, the company recorded a revenue-based TV market share of 31.9%1 in 2020. This was the highest figure the company had ever recorded, and means that Samsung has retained its number one spot in the global TV market for the 15th consecutive year. In this two-part series, Samsung Newsroom will explore the legacy of Samsung TVs, which have long been pioneers in the sector.

A History of Excellence

Samsung released its initial ‘world’s first’ television in 1998 with the launch of its 55-inch projection TV. The company’s initial securing of this title was partially brought about by its helping to lead the global transition from analog to digital television.

Samsung went on to further change the game by releasing its LCD TV in the early 2000s. Around this time the company successfully popularized wall-mountable LCD TVs, leading to the inception of the golden age of LCD TVs. Samsung also launched a 46-inch (116cm) LCD TV—which was then the largest in the industry—and consequently altered the approach of an industry that had not been focused on large-screen TVs up to then. The 46-inch LCD TV, which cost more than USD 13,000 back then, was widely welcomed and helped spur the success of LCD TVs.

Samsung’s Bordeaux LCD TV, naturally portraying the tones of a fine wine

The Bordeaux LCD TV, released by Samsung in 2006, is another example that shows how innovation-based, outside-the-box thinking has changed the face of the sector forevermore. Developers began to question the long-term feasibility of thick, heavy, vacuum-tube-based televisions and instead started to dream of TVs that were lightweight and aesthetically sophisticated. The Bordeaux TV was the result, with its sales numbers exceeding one million in the first six months of its release. The Bordeaux TV featured a speaker that was relocated from both sides of the TV to the bottom, and highlighted its sophistication with a crimson color and curved edges. In addition to marking the launch of the Bordeaux TV, 2006 was also the first time in the company’s history that Samsung ranked first in the global television market. The company has continued to hold that position for 15 consecutive years, and still holds it today.

The Commitment to Realizing the Best Definition Ever Seen

Aiming to provide the absolute best experience to its television users, Samsung has maintained a keen commitment to improving image resolution. In a time of constantly changing lifestyle patterns and an ever-expanding pool of content, true technological innovation remains a primary driving force when it comes to retaining the TV industry’s top spot.

Samsung’s LED TV, which received attention for its innovative, integrated technologies

At CES 2009, Samsung introduced the beginning of the LED TV era. The company’s LED televisions used light emitting diodes (LEDs), which are semiconductor-based light sources that emit light when current flows through them, to realize very clear image resolution. About 50 engineers worked for around two years to completely redesign all components of the TV, obtaining more than 3,000 patents as they worked to realize the potential of LED TV technology. The resulting televisions would go on to distinguish themselves by creating a whole new domain for the industry.

Samsung’s QLED TV, first introduced at CES 2017

Samsung’s QLED TV, which achieved 100 percent color volume for the first time in the industry, is another product that reached the peak of screen technology. In 2017, Samsung released this next-generation television, which was based on quantum dot (QLED) technology. The TV takes quantum dot technology to new heights with advancements in light efficiency, stability and a wider color spectrum. At this time, Samsung emphasized that it would be creating a new standard for the global TV market in accordance with its slogan, ‘The Next Innovation In TV.’

Samsung revealed its 2021 Neo QLED, a whole new display technology, during its First Look event ahead of CES 2021. Neo QLED is underpinned by Quantum Mini LED technology, which features LEDs that are 1/40th the height of conventional LEDs and are precisely controlled by Samsung’s own Quantum Matrix Technology and Neo Quantum Processor, a powerful picture processor with enhanced upscaling capabilities. Thus, Samsung, which has remained a step ahead when it comes to introducing future display technology, continues to lead the global TV sector while further strengthening its unique position in the market.

Reflecting Users’ Tastes – The Inception of the ‘Era of Smart’

After leading the global TV market for 15 consecutive years, Samsung’s innovations have come to transform users’ lifestyles and daily routines too. As more and more users gained the ability to handpick the content they wanted to watch, Samsung launched the Samsung TV App Store in 2010. In particular, the app provided a variety of high-quality local content for different countries, which helped to expand viewer pools. By developing the app according to the viewing preferences of each region and accentuating content like sports, movies, and cooking, Samsung helped make the viewing experience more enjoyable and further advanced its leadership.

Samsung has also been offering its Samsung TV Plus2 service since the service’s launch in 2015. Samsung TV Plus is the company’s free Smart TV video service, which provides instant access to news, sports, entertainment and more. The service has now been expanded to 12 countries, bringing access to over 60 million Samsung Smart TVs.

Samsung, which has always been ahead of the pack when it comes to making our societies smarter, will continue to put the users first by allowing them to select what they want to consume and catering its offerings to their tastes. As it continues to demonstrate the power of content, Samsung is planning to further expand its Smart TV experiences by increasing the number of countries where it can provide its services, as well as reinforcing its cooperation with broadcasting companies and content providers from around the world.

Retail managers and franchise operators know the hassle of updating paper posters across multiple locations. For frequently changing content — such as class schedules, seasonal notices or limited-time promotions — paper posters may be simple to place, but the repeated time and cost of printing and replacing them can quickly add up.
Samsung Color E-Paper provides a more efficient way forward. Utilizing digital ink technology, it maintains the visual appeal of traditional paper posters while significantly reducing the challenges associated with installation and management. This is a super-thin, ultra-low power and lightweight digital signage that transforms the traditional paper experience.
Unlike conventional digital signage, it consumes zero watts power when showing static images.1 When content is updated, overall energy use remains far lower than that of conventional digital signage, which helps lower operating costs over time.2
▲ (From left) Samsung Color E-Paper lineup in 20”, 13” and 32” displays Available in 32-inch, 20-inch and 13-inch sizes, it also makes the transition to digital easier in real spaces. The 20-inch3 and 13-inch sizes align with familiar paper formats so that businesses can move from print to digital without redesigning layouts. The signage can be wall-mounted, hung or placed on a movable stand, so it works flexibly across café counters, retail walls, and franchise locations.4
▲ Easy to install, Samsung Color E-Paper works for various retail environments. With the dedicated Color E-Paper mobile app,5 local management stays simple. Content can be updated right from a mobile device, allowing changes to be made instantly on the spot.
For businesses operating both Color E-Paper and other connected displays, Samsung Visual eXperience Transformation (VXT)6 makes remote display management straightforward. Samsung Electronics today announced the global launch of the 13-inch Samsung Color E-Paper (EM13DX model), expanding its Color E-Paper lineup with the world’s first display designed with a bio-resin housing derived from phytoplankton. The paper‑thin display uses advanced digital ink technology and ultra‑low power to offer businesses a practical alternative to traditional printed signage.
“As businesses look for more flexible and efficient ways to communicate, Samsung Color E-Paper represents a shift in how digital signage fits into everyday operations,” said Hyoung Jae Kim, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display (VD) Business at Samsung Electronics. “By incorporating innovative technology such as phytoplankton-based bio-resin, we’re demonstrating our commitment to advancing both display technology and the materials behind it. Our Color E-Paper products are designed to replace paper with ultra-low power performance and ultra-slim, lightweight designs.”

Paper‑Like Color and Clarity for Modern Digital Displays
As the smallest model in the lineup, the new 13-inch Samsung Color E-Paper offers businesses a compact display option for shelves, counters, tables and doors where traditional paper signage is still widely used. Similar in scale to A4 paper, the display delivers 1,600 x 1,200 resolution in a 4:3 aspect ratio.
With a rechargeable, embedded battery, USB Type-C support and flexible mounting options,1 the display can be deployed without permanent power cables. Its ultra-slim 17.9mm design weighs just 0.9kg with the battery, making it easy to install and reposition across different placements as campaigns change. Samsung’s advanced color imaging algorithm enhances color accuracy and readability to deliver a paper-like look and feel. By smoothing gradations and refining contours, it produces vivid visuals that resemble traditional posters and point-of-purchase displays, helping businesses transition naturally from printed materials to digital signage.

Pioneering Lower‑Impact Signage With Bio‑Based Materials
Samsung’s 13-inch Color E-Paper is the world’s first commercial display to apply a bio-resin derived from phytoplankton in its housing. The display’s housing has been independently verified by global safety and sustainability certification organization UL to consist of 45% recycled plastic and 10% phytoplankton-based bio-resin. This material innovation was developed as an alternative to conventional petroleum-based plastics, which can reduce carbon emissions in the manufacturing process by more than 40%.2
Sustainability is carefully considered in every part of the display, from the housing to the packaging. The entire packaging, including the box, cushion and accessory box, is made from 100% paper.
Day-to-day operation is designed to be just as efficient. The display maintains static images at zero watts power, reducing unnecessary energy usage without compromising reliability.3 When content is updated, overall energy4 use remains far lower than that of conventional digital signage, which helps lower operating costs over time.

Easy Content Control With Samsung E-Paper App and Samsung VXT
Samsung’s 13-inch Color E-Paper supports simple content control for both local and remote operation. The Samsung E-Paper App, available on Android and iOS, allows staff to update and manage local content directly from personal devices, without the need for an additional remote control.
The display is also compatible with Samsung VXT, a cloud-based content and remote device management platform that lets teams remotely manage hardware settings, troubleshoot issues and create and deploy content with minimal training. For Color E-Paper, Samsung VXT includes dedicated features to optimize content visibility, as well as a preview function that allows teams to check color accuracy before deployment.
Alongside the new 13-inch display, Samsung will unveil a 20-inch model for the first time at ISE 2026, a world-renowned audiovisual and systems integration tech show held in Barcelona from Feb. 3-6. With this expansion of the Color E-Paper lineup beyond the existing 32-inch model offering, the Color E-Paper portfolio is increasingly designed to support a wide range of business needs.
Samsung continues to lead the global digital signage market, securing a 36.2% global market share by volume in Q3 2025, building on its 17-year position as the world’s leading commercial display provider.5
The EM13DX series includes two rear holders, two hanging brackets and two simple stands. Additional installation accessories may be required, depending on the setup, and are sold separately. ︎ Based on internal test results under specific conditions only. Comparison is made against petroleum-based resin (PC+ABS) of the same weight. Carbon emissions calculation is based on the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) data of resin production following ISO 14067, 14040 and 14044 standards, covering carbon emissions from cradle to gate (excluding downstream, use-phase and end-of-life emissions). All figures are estimates based on available data and are subject to change. ︎ Activities related to content refresh, content changes or device monitoring and control will require additional power. Content refresh is essential and automatically performed when the power cable or battery is connected. ︎ Battery duration may vary based on factors including network environment, hardware components and user activity. ︎ Consumer TVs are excluded. “Micro RGB represents the peak of our picture quality innovation, and the new 130-inch model takes that vision even further,” said Hun Lee, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display (VD) Business at Samsung Electronics. “We’re reviving the spirit of our original design philosophy introduced more than a decade ago to deliver an unmistakably premium display, engineered with technology for a new generation.”

Bold Design That Redefines What a TV Can Be
The Micro RGB TV’s commanding scale, next-generation color technology and striking design approach reflect Samsung’s longstanding leadership in engineering excellence united with premium aesthetics. With a monumental frame and improved audio performance, the 130-inch display is intentionally designed to appear less like a television and more like a vast, immersive window that visually expands the room.
The TV offers a modern, gallery-inspired aesthetic through the Timeless Frame, a modern evolution of Samsung’s 2013 Timeless Gallery design, now with a refined frame that embodies the philosophy of “technology as art.” Inspired by the frame of a grand architectural window, the ultra-large screen appears to float within its borders, transforming the TV into an artistic centerpiece that shapes the room. Sound integrated into the display’s frame is carefully balanced to the screen’s size, so picture and audio feel naturally connected in a space.

Ultimate Viewing Experience To Match Its Scale
The 130-inch Micro RGB model features Samsung’s most advanced Micro RGB innovations to date. Powered by Micro RGB AI Engine Pro, Micro RGB Color Booster Pro and Micro RGB HDR Pro, it leverages AI to enhance dull tones and refine contrast, delivering vivid color and subtle detail across bright and dark scenes alike for realism and picture fidelity.
The display elevates picture performance with Micro RGB Precision Color 100, delivering 100% of the BT.2020 wide color gamut. Certified by the Verband der Elektrotechnik (VDE) for precise Micro RGB color reproduction, it produces finely controlled hues that appear true to life on screen. The 130-inch model also includes Samsung’s proprietary Glare Free technology, which minimizes reflections, further preserving clear color and contrast across a variety of lighting conditions for the best viewing experience.
The product supports HDR10+ ADVANCED1 and Eclipsa Audio to provide an enhanced picture and sound quality, as well as Samsung’s enhanced Vision AI Companion,2 enabling conversational search, proactive recommendations and access to AI features and apps such as AI Football Mode Pro, AI Sound Controller Pro, Live Translate, Generative Wallpaper, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity. The first-of-its-kind display will be showcased at Samsung’s Exhibition Zone during CES 2026 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Seongsu-dong is one of Seoul’s most vibrant destinations for both customers and brands. At the heart of the neighborhood stands Amore Seongsu, the flagship store of global beauty powerhouse Amorepacific. Preserving architectural elements such as the structure, floors and walls of the original automobile repair shop it once was, this unique space invites visitors to explore an immersive, hands-on journey toward discovering “beauty that is uniquely yours.”

Designed with the customer experience in mind, Amore Seongsu seamlessly incorporates a range of Samsung Electronics products into the space. Alongside lifestyle TVs such as The Serif and The Sero as well as Smart Monitors, the store recently introduced Samsung’s Color E-paper. The addition marks a meaningful step toward sustainable transformation through digital innovation — while remaining true to the store’s core philosophy of effortless authenticity.

▲ (From left) Tae-hyun Kim, Senior Manager and Jeongsik Shin, Assistant Manager of the Restore Business Team at Amorepacific Creative Center, are enhancing store operations by introducing Samsung Color E-Paper to the flagship store.

Samsung Newsroom spoke with Tae-hyun Kim, Senior Manager and Jeongsik Shin, Assistant Manager — both part of the Restore Business Team at Amorepacific Creative Center — about how Color E-Paper was integrated into the store and how visitors have responded.

Flexible Placement: Allowing for Seamless Digital Integration
When visitor enter Amore Seongsu, the first space they encounter is the reception area — where Color E-Paper displays the store layout and event information.

▲ Visitors are welcomed by Samsung Color E-Paper at Amore Seongsu, one of Seoul’s trendiest spots.

“Color E-Paper was the first thing I sought when I walked into Amore Seongsu — to check the store map,” said Hefziba Mancilla Plaza, a Canadian intern at Amorepacific. “I actually thought it was a framed poster until someone told me it was a digital device.”

Another Color E-Paper is installed in the merchandising zone, suspended elegantly from the ceiling like an art piece. As visitors conclude their immersive journey through the store, the display elegantly complements the product presentation.

▲ Samsung Color E-Paper suspended from the ceiling in the merchandising zone at Amore Seongsu.

Weighing just 2.5 kg including its cordless, rechargeable battery, Color E-Paper is lightweight and easy to install in various formats — hanging, standing or wall-mounted1 — without the need for additional mounts. This versatility allows retail managers to easily adapt to the frequent changes characteristic of pop-up retail spaces.

“Amore Seongsu is a space where the concept of beauty is reinterpreted through visual storytelling and thematic experiences, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a journey to discover a beauty that reflects the self,” said Kim. “Although Samsung Color E-Paper is a digital device, its slim, cable-free design and light weight enables us to easily install it anywhere without worrying about changing the visual language of the existing environment.”

▲ (Left photo, from left) Alena Zhang, Hefziba Mancilla Plaza and Abigaël Mihalache appreciate how Samsung Color E-Paper’s sleek design naturally blends into the store interior.

Visitors seem to notice the alignment between space and design. “What stood out to me [about Amore Seongsu] was how the preserved structure of the old building and the central garden create a unique atmosphere that enhances the products display,” said Abigaël Mihalache, a customer from France. “Color E-Paper blends in and draws attention to the products while supporting the brand’s story.”

Streamlined Operations: A Smarter Way To Manage Retail Spaces
Beyond its versatile installation options, Samsung Color E-Paper offers another key advantage — the ability to adapt content to suit the space and context.

At Amore Seongsu, monthly themed exhibitions and brand pop-ups mean frequent content updates. In the past, replacing and reinstalling printed materials required significant time and cost. With Color E-Paper, staff members can now update and apply content changes quickly and easily using a dedicated mobile app. The app also supports a playlist feature, enabling multiple pieces of content to be displayed and rotated in sequence, further improving space utility and operational efficiency.

▲ Kim highlights how easy content updates have opened up new possibilities for store operations.

“When we used posters or brochures, we couldn’t make modifications once they were printed. The process of ordering, receiving and installing them was also cumbersome,” said Shin. “Content management is significantly faster and more efficient with Color E-Paper since everything is handled through a single app.”

“In a faced-paced environment where information constantly changes, we needed a visual medium that could communicate effectively without overwhelming the space,” Kim added. “Most backlit displays end up feeling harsh in our store. They are too bright and end up clashing with our calm ambiance. Color E-Paper, on the other hand, integrates naturally and offers a more refined, less intrusive presentation. That subtlety was especially appealing.”

The Vision: A Step Towards Sustainable Beauty
Color E-Paper is unlocking new possibilities for next-generation digital signage — delivering both immersion and convenience while reducing the need for paper and ink and, at the same time, using significantly less energy than conventional digital signage.

▲ Shin values the sustainability aspect of Samsung Color E-Paper.

By providing a soft, paper-like display, Color E-Paper resonates with Amorepacific’s philosophy of embracing natural, self-reflective beauty. Unlike typical backlit displays, this innovative product uses a printing-like technology paired with Samsung’s proprietary Color Imaging Algorithm technology to deliver vibrant colors and sharp images.

“We put a lot of care into ensuring that our visual materials accurately reflect the real colors and textures of our products,” said Shin. “Samsung Color E-Paper‘s subtle, natural colors allow us to maintain that consistency without overstatement.”

▲ A visitor examines how Samsung Color E-Paper naturally reflects the colors of the products.

Additionally, Color E-Paper consumes just 0.00 watts2 when displaying static content, enabling energy-efficient operation, even in spaces where content changes frequently

“The fact that Color E-Paper offers a sustainable alternative to paper makes it even more meaningful,” Kim added. “It aligns with Amorepacific’s philosophy of not only conveying external beauty but also reflecting on intrinsic values.”

Brands tell their stories through physical space and customers connect with those stories through experiences. Samsung Color E-Paper is bridging experience and meaning, driving transformation with technology that blends seamlessly into virtually any environment.

1 Accessories including stand and wall-mount sold separately.
2 According to International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 62301 standards, power consumption under 0.005 watts is displayed as 0.00 watts.
