Adapt Your App to Foldable Devices for an Optimal User Experience

Foldable technology for mobile is a groundbreaking experience not only for users but also for developers. The presence of many form factors like immersive display, app continuity, Flex mode and UX optimization challenge developers to think outside of the box to adapt to this technology. In this blog, we discuss a checklist to provide a better understanding about the adaptation, modification and design changes that are required. So, let's go through each point, one-by-one.

Large screen optimization

Samsung foldable devices have two different physical screens: the cover display and the main display. As the cover display is much smaller than the main display, large screen optimization is one of the key areas of designing UX for foldable devices. In a nutshell, your app can utilize the extra space in the main display by showing more information. Just having a different UI design with the same information can do the trick of optimization as well.

To implement this scenario, define different layout files for each display using the alternate resources option. For example, if you want to define a different UI for the main display, create a new directory named layout-sw600dp under the res directory and then create an xml file named activity_main. Then add the layout code as required.

Flex mode optimization

In Galaxy Z series devices, Samsung introduced a new mode called Flex mode. This mode allows users to use apps while the book-like phone is partially folded. Creative design can really make your app stand out from others in Flex mode.

Using Google’s new Jetpack library, WindowManager, you can detect the current posture of a Galaxy Z series device and update the UI accordingly by following these steps:

Step 1: Add the dependencies in the build.gradle.

Step 2: Define a WindowManager instance.

Step 3: Register the DeviceState change listener. The listener notices changes in the device state (for example CLOSED, OPENED, HALF_OPENED).

Step 4: Write a callback function to check deviceState.posture to get the current posture of the device. If the posture is POSTURE_HALF_OPENED, the app UI gets updated for Flex mode.

App continuity

While folding and unfolding the device, the app must prevent data loss thus ensuring its continuity. This is achievable by using the onSaveInstanceState() method. First, save the data to retain the current state with onSaveInstanceState().

Responsive UI layout

To adapt to new form factors such as a diverse aspect ratio, Flex mode, multi-window, and pop-up window, utilize the following guidelines :

  • Design a responsive UI layout for your app using ConstraintLayout.
  • Define the activity of your app as resizable, to ensure the maximum compatibility of your app with both the cover display and the main display of the device. Set the resizableActivity attribute to true in Manifest.xml.

Cutout and punch hole of the main display

The main display of a Galaxy Z Fold is covered by an area on the top-right side called the “L-cut” whereas the Galaxy Z Fold2 and Fold3 have a punch hole in the upper right side and the Galaxy Z Flip devices have a punch hole in the middle. Some portion of your app’s UI could be covered by the L-cut or the punch hole.

To avoid such a scenario, depending on your UI content style, define a display cutout mode. For example, the content is letterboxed in landscape mode whereas it is rendered into the cutout area in portrait mode by default. Define the display cutout mode in the style.xml as shortEdges so that your content is rendered into the cutout area in both portrait and landscape modes.

      Quantum Matrix Technology Pro Delivers Ultra-Fine Contrast With Details in Darkest Blacks and Lightest Whites
      Samsung has continued to pave the way forward in innovation for picture quality by applying cutting-edge technologies to its latest TVs. The newly released Neo QLED 8K is an upgraded version of its previous QLED TV and comes with a wide range of innovative features. At the center of this advancement is Quantum Matrix Technology Pro, which takes advantage of the enhanced 14-bit gradation for greater control of the miniaturized light source — the Quantum Mini LEDs. This allows the TV to control its lighting across an astounding 16,384 steps, which is four times greater than conventional 12-bit displays at 4,096 steps, providing true-to-life colors previously unseen.
       

       
       
      Shape Adaptive Light and Real Depth Enhancer Add Depth for Vivid, Lifelike Images
      Newly introduced technologies, namely Shape Adaptive Light and Real Depth Enhancer, have taken the picture quality offered by Samsung TVs to new heights. These new features optimize contrast and produce clean and punchy images, adding a more realistic sense of depth to your screen.
       

       
      Real Depth Enhancer improves picture quality by separating an object from a background. “Every image has an object and background with different requirements to bring out the optimal picture quality,” said Jo. “Real Depth Enhancer separates the object from the background to enhance the contrast of the object, making it look clear. In doing so, we can clearly distinguish the object from the background, creating a greater sense of depth and making the images pop.”
       
      Shape Adaptive Light analyzes a scene and estimates the difference in the light layer by each section of a scene to control the light source. Shape Adaptive Light creates the effect of synergy with the latest Quantum Mini LED to precisely control and optimize the light source for an accurate contrast. “Simply put, it makes bright areas stay bright and the dark spaces around it stay dark. Additionally, the technology enables optimal contrast levels and allows details in the inkiest blacks, producing life-like picture quality,” said Jo.
       

       
       
      Upgraded Neural Quantum Processor Allows Customized AI Upscaling for Any Given Scene
      Technological prowess has allowed us to enjoy 8K picture quality from the comfort of one’s home. Although not all shows and movies are made in 8K, users are able to take full advantage of the latest TV tech Samsung has to offer. In fact, the real value of 8K TVs comes from Samsung’s AI upscaling technology, which offers next-level picture quality by analyzing the image in real-time and upgrading it to higher picture quality or even 8K, regardless of the original image quality. Neo QLED 8K raised the number of neural networks from 16 to 20 to strengthen the capability for image analysis and upscaling. Multi-intelligent AI networks from the Neural Quantum Processor improve not only images, but also cloud games in 8K resolution for seamless and natural gameplay.
       

       
      “As the number of networks has gone up, we were able to upscale a wider range of content to deliver a better viewing experience for users,” said Jeong. “Samsung added neural networks to make the image of cloud games vivid and reduce noise. The neural networks immediately analyze a picture, optimize a network and upscale it to 8K so that users can enjoy a cleaner game image.”
       
      Jeong shared Samsung’s ambition to provide a better viewing experience: “Samsung’s multi-intelligence AI network is set up to continuously expand, delivering optimal picture quality technology according to a viewing environment and the latest content trends.”
       
       
      Samsung’s 2022 QLED TVs, the World’s First HDR Displays With ‘Pantone Validated’ Approval
      Color is an important factor in evaluating a TV’s picture quality. Samsung has achieved 100% color volume since 2017 and displayed accurate and vivid colors. Samsung’s all-new 2022 QLED models, including Neo QLED 8K, became the world’s first HDR displays with ‘Pantone Validated’ certification. Pantone specializes in color and provides a global color standard, PMS (Pantone Matching System). The certification means that Samsung’s ability to accurately express colors is officially recognized. Neo QLED 8K was acknowledged for its accurate expression of 2,161 Pantone colors and 110 skin tone shades.
       

       
      “Pantone Validated certification suggests that the color expression of Neo QLED 8K is almost on par with the colors we are able to detect with our eyes,” said Lee. “Technological advancements of Neo Quantum Processor, along with Quantum Dot material help our TVs accurately express more than 2,000 colors recognized by Pantone and also 110 skin tones, the most complicated and delicate colors.”
       
       
      Smart Calibration — Automatically Calibrate and Optimize Picture Quality in an Easy and Convenient way
      Samsung has been providing industry-leading picture quality through technical innovation. A classic example is Smart Calibration, which is embedded in the latest TV models in 2022.
       

       
      Smart Calibration enables anyone with a Samsung Neo QLED to calibrate their screen by simply using their smartphone.2 This allows users to calibrate their TVs for superb image quality through a simple step-by-step process with the Smart Calibration feature within the Smart Things app. All users have to do is open the Smart Calibration feature within the SmartThings app and point their smartphone camera towards the TV, the SmartThings app will then simplify the process to optimize picture quality. Users can choose between ‘Basic Mode’ and ‘Professional Mode’ according to how accurately they want to adjust picture quality. Basic Mode offers a quick calibration within 15 seconds, while Professional Mode optimizes more details of the picture and takes only 5-8 minutes to complete.
       

       
      “Picture calibration normally requires expensive equipments, such as a measuring instrument and pattern generator. Smart Calibration enables users to adjust picture quality easily and conveniently with just their smartphone. Samsung developed this solution to help everyone easily calibrate their screens and enjoy accurate images,” said Jung. “Professionals who work with colors like photographers tend to calibrate their devices quite frequently — once every three months or six months. While this isn’t required for ordinary uses, it will be great for users to calibrate their screens using Smart Calibration when they first purchase the TV or when moving the TV to a different location.”
       
       
      Samsung Neo QLED 8K, the First TV To Receive ‘Eye Care’ Certificate by Top Global Certification Institutes
      There is now more amazing content available via OTT services than ever before, and as a result, more and more people are spending their leisure time watching this content on TVs. Therefore, comfortable viewing experience is becoming an important factor influencing TV purchasing decisions.
       

       
      The 2021 and 2022 Samsung QLED TVs, including Neo QLED 8K, won the ‘Eye Care’ certification from Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker (VDE) in Germany, a test & certification association. This makes them among the first TVs to be awarded a certificate specific to eye care. VDE’s ‘Eye Care’ certification includes ‘Safety for Eyes’, ‘Gentle to the eyes’, flicker level,3 uniformity4 and color fidelity5 assessments. ‘Safety for Eyes’ certification is assigned to products with the emission levels of blue light, ultraviolet rays and infrared rays that fall into the ‘Exempt Group’ according to the classification of emission limits set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
       
      ‘Gentle to the eyes’ certification proves that the amount of melatonin suppression from a device meets the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) standard.
       
      “As TVs become more of an entertainment hub in the home, there’s an increased demand for screens with top-tier picture quality that minimize eye strain. A comfortable viewing experience is quickly becoming a key factor in purchasing decisions, in addition to picture quality and performance. Neo QLED 8K, with its ‘Eye Care’ certification, meets these criteria, offering more comfortable watching experience to users,” said Jung.
       

       
      Additionally, the Eye Comfort mode on Neo QLED 8K adjusts the screen’s brightness. It limits blue light to provide a more pleasant viewing experience, all done automatically by the TV’s Neural Quantum Processor. “AI technology automatically adjusts a screen’s brightness and color temperature according to a viewing environment so that users can comfortably enjoy their favorite content on their TV,” said Lee. “After sunset, you will see significantly warmer colors and reduced brightness, while during the daytime, the screen will be brighter and more vivid.”
       
       
      AI technology To Provide Perfect Viewing Experience With Minimal Effort From the Users’ Side
      As displays get larger and the technology for enhancing picture quality improves, so too does the standard for good picture quality. “The ultimate goal of advancing our technology in picture quality is to enable our TVs to automatically adjust their own picture quality to its optimal setting, producing a lifelike image. We will continue to develop cutting-edge technology to offer true-to-life picture quality to our consumers,” said Lee.
       

       
      “Our users’ overall viewing experience is just as important as accurate color and sharpness,” said Jo. This means it is essential to help users conveniently enjoy the best picture quality. “We consistently strive to create a viewing experience where users can simply enjoy content anywhere, in any environment. Samsung is committed to advancing AI technology to provide perfect picture quality with minimal effort from the users’ side.”

      In the past, Samsung phones have not held up for long periods of time. It was almost like, if you had a Galaxy S8, it wasn’t a question of if the screen would break, but more of when would it break. Various tests showed that the Galaxy S8 and other Galaxy phones couldn’t handle accidental drops that many other smartphones could. That meant that you were having to more or less plan to have protective gear with your phone, shell out extra cash for insurance, or put some money aside for the inevitable accident that will ruin your display.
      Eventually, Samsung wisened up and now their Galaxy line is rather indestructible. But some of their other phones, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Z Fold 4, or Z Flip 3, are foldable. While a foldable phone may seem like it’s also indestructible, that doesn’t mean it won’t get broken. Something revealed recently in a Z Fold 4 design leak was just how bulky it will be. So if something does happen to your phone, it may cost you more to replace it than you realize.

      Galaxy S22 Ultra colors Image source: Samsung Foldable phones, while they can be easier to carry around and offer you a lot of flexibility, still aren’t as durable as their counterparts. Phones like the Galaxy S22 Ultra are durable to a point and can hold up to most accidental falls. The foldable phones, like the Z Flip and Z Fold lines, are good against accidental falls, and that has a lot to do with the pre-applied screen protector on the inner screen that Samsung adds in.
      These can get scratched or dinged up the more you use your phone. The frustrating thing is, there’s no way to get them easily fixed, other than sending yours away to Samsung. However, if you don’t live in a major market, this could take a long time. Then you’re without your phone for a longer period of time.
      Pricing guide for repairs
      Also, if you don’t have a warranty, or you’re passed yours, it’ll cost you. Take a look at the Samsung Direct pricing guide for repairing screens. Notice that there are plenty of moderate costs for the outer screen, which is the one that’s more commonly going to get scratched up. For example, getting a Z Fold 3’s outer screen repaired will cost you $149. But to have to get the inner screen repaired, which is a much harder ordeal, as we discussed above, will set you back $479. There are complete other phones you can buy for $479. Many repair shops don’t even offer internal screen repair as an option.
      The Galaxy Fold is no better. The inner screen replacement for that is $599. A Z Fold 2 is $549 and a Z Flip is $499. Now, Samsung does offer you a caveat if your Galaxy Z Fold 2 was purchased before December 31, 2021. You’re then eligible for a one-time screen replacement price of $149. The same goes for Galaxy Fold purchased before December 31, 2020. Also, a Z Flip purchased before December 31, 2020, gets a one-time screen replacement price of $119.
      You can go in person and maybe get a same-day replacement. But if you’re not in an area like Dallas or Houston (which are highlighted on the Samsung website), you may be out of luck. These problems will likely continue with the more foldable phones that Samsung releases. Unless you want to cough up extra dough, I’d say protect your phone as much as you can.

      Samsung Electronics is showcasing the future of Micro LED technology at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2022 in Barcelona, with three new models of its state-of-the-art display technology, The Wall.
       
      “Micro LED technology is set to define the future of display innovation. From the luxury industry to hospitality and travel, the potential of Micro LED is endless in enabling businesses to achieve more,” said Hyesung Ha, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “ISE is the largest show of its kind in the world and we are excited to unveil our expanded lineup of The Wall. The next-generation technology of The Wall will deliver benefits beyond expectations, transforming any business and unlocking new opportunities.” 
       
       
      2022 The Wall — Introducing the Slimmest Ever Pixel Pitch
       
      At ISE this year, Samsung will unveil its 2022 model of The Wall (Model name: IWB) — an innovative modular Micro LED display that delivers immersive viewing experiences in a high-resolution, large screen format. The IWB will be available in 0.63 and 0.94pixel pitches, with 0.63 being the slimmest ever pixel pitch in The Wall lineup. The new display is now available to preorder globally. 
       
      The micro pitch feature of the IWB demonstrates Samsung’s most detailed picture and dynamic range expansion with the screen’s 120Hz frame rate, HDR10/10+ and LED HDR. Following installation, The Wall provides a variety of screen sizes, accommodating 4K movies for 110-inch and up to incredible 8K quality for 220-inch to meet any consumer or business needs. This resolution capability is enhanced by the powerful Micro AI (Artificial Intelligence) Processor, which analyzes every second of content instantly and optimizes picture quality while removing noise.
       

       
      The overall size of the cabinets has been increased, allowing businesses and consumers to install only four cabinets to configure the UHD screen, meaning faster and more cost-efficient operation. The display’s improved cabinet strengthens the large, high-resolution screens and improves the mechanical quality for immersive viewing while enhancing seam adjustment. In fact, the installation time has been reduced offering significant benefits to businesses compared to conventional LED signage.
       
      The Wall is also packed with industry-leading technology. Firstly, with Multi View, The Wall enables simultaneous multi-source playback from up to four sources, all on one screen, without any additional splitter required for dynamic content display. Secondly, Black Seal Technology built into the display creates a seamless canvas for purer black levels, with an ultra-low reflective film that has been applied to minimize external light reflection. Plus, with 20-bit processing, The Wall delivers outstanding image quality and a smooth viewing experience, supported by a peak of 2,000 nits providing clearer images.
       

       
       
      The Wall All-in-One — Innovative and Convenient Installation 
      Also being unveiled in Barcelona this year, is The Wall All-in-One (Model name: IAB) available in three different models: 4K 146-inch, 2K 146-inch and 2K 110-inch. This incredible, next generation display brings innovation to the installation, not just the viewing experience. The standard resolution of The Wall All-in-One is a 16:9 form factor. The product, which is only sold by screen, will be available globally following ISE 2022. 
       

       
      The most innovative feature of The Wall All-in-One is the convenient installation that features a pre-adjusted seam and a ‘Pre-Assembled Frame Kit’. This kit, which makes the whole process simple as a consumer TV, includes the 16:9 form factor display’s internalized deco bezel and an embedded media player S-box, also lowering the total cost of ownership.
       

       
      The Wall All-in-One offers a sleek design with display thinness of just 49mm, which is ultimately 59mm in total installation when measured from wall to screen. This slim, bezel-less infinity design provides a direct input connection on the screen without a separate device — creating a clean and convenient setup.

      Samsung’s latest 2022 outdoor line-up (Model Name: OHA 55’’, 75’’) has been verified for outdoor visibility by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), while the slim composition enables easy installation and long-term performance through certified IP56-rated protection. With its durable and high-performing hardware, the OHA can perform in a variety of conditions. One use case is electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, which are increasing in demand as the sales of electric vehicles continue to rise worldwide.

      Samsung’s LED display portfolio has captured Los Angeles’ most striking architecture, SoFi Stadium — home to this Sunday’s Big Game — with its Infinity Screen installation in August 2020. The largest videoboard ever created in sports, Samsung’s cutting-edge visual display technology features a double-sided 70,000 square-foot 4K LED display that loops around the center of the stadium, offering an unprecedented view to all fans no matter where they’re sitting.
       
      Positioned 122 feet above the playing field, the oval display features approximately 80 million pixels and with the largest graphics control system in the history of sports, the Infinity Screen is revolutionizing how the stadium visually connects with its viewers to enhance the fan experience like never before.
       
      When it comes to picture quality, Samsung delivers the most advanced high dynamic range (HDR) technology. Setting the standard for stadium videoboards, Samsung has implemented the latest iteration, HDR10+, to produce a superior image quality that captures every detail of gameplay. Viewers following Sunday’s game at home can expect a truly immersive experience thanks to its dynamic tone mapping and enhanced intrinsic dynamic range. HDR10+ support will play a major role in the stadium’s upgrades over the course of the partnership.
       
      This multi-year alliance extends across the entire Hollywood Park portfolio and has incredible applications for the development’s retail, office, residential, sports and entertainment offerings.
       
      When complete, Hollywood Park will feature retail space totaling up to 890,000 square-foot. It will also feature up to 2,500 residences, 25 acres of public parks and open space, a hotel, and up to 5 million square feet of creative office space.

      Samsung Electronics today announced the latest development in its ongoing partnership with streaming giant, Netflix, to herald the release of the second season of its hit-show, Emily in Paris, produced by MTV Entertainment Studios. The Emmy-nominated show, renowned for its 21st century celebration of iconic Parisian style, has collaborated with Samsung to showcase world-class premium technology to fans of the series.
       
      In the first season, the beautiful setting and quintessentially Parisian characters gave viewers an insight into French style and culture and are some of the driving forces behind the show’s success. This sense of escapism was created and elevated by the global cast, including the iconic character of Sylvie Grateau. Played by Samsung ambassador Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Sylvie acts as lead protagonist Emily’s boss, and the CMO of luxury marketing agency Savoir. Sylvie’s character embodies true stylish authority; great at her job, powerful, commanding and effortlessly chic, she became one of the most widely recognized and loved characters from the show’s debut season. To launch the second season, Samsung and Netflix will bring iconic style and innovative technology to fans of Emily in Paris through an integrated campaign; featuring offline ads, social and influencer content, and a TikTok filter that provides a new way for fans to enjoy the show, through the lens of the iconic Galaxy Z Flip 5G. The filter will allow fans to “flip the script” and become the lead character in their own Emily in Paris animated poster. The stunning Galaxy Z Flip 5G will unfold in front of the user, putting them front and center before the iconic Eiffel Tower. TikTok users* can try out the Flip the Script TikTok Effect on the platform as of 28th of December.
