[Turning Your Living Room Into a Home Theater] ② The Design Story Behind The Premiere, a Projector That Provides Experiences Beyond ‘Cinematic’

Recommended Posts

These days, the ways people are enjoying their favorite media are becoming ever more diverse due to a wide range of different lifestyles and preferences. With the launch of their home cinema projector The Premiere, Samsung Electronics has freed users from the limitations of their domestic spaces: wherever they choose to enjoy their content, The Premiere is capable of acting as a large-screen portal to a new, fully immersive world.

The Premiere was created based on research into and an understanding of real users’ environments and spaces. Its appearance, as well as its functionality, was refined with precision so that the projector fits comfortably into a user’s space as opposed to being a cumbersome device that can only be taken out and used every now and then. In order to learn more about the innovative concept behind The Premiere, Samsung Newsroom sat down with its designers to hear about the journey they went on when creating this unique screen.

A Design That Blends In, Inspired by Users’ Environments

The Premiere’s designers first started by delving into and analyzing the projector market in order to be able to develop a differentiated product. “There are already so many projectors in the market, from affordable ones to high-end ones, all with different specifications,” noted Sungil Bang. “We knew we needed to take a new approach right from the planning stages in order to come up with a product that goes beyond simply being a projector.”

The designers honed in on the idea of the actual space where a projector is to be placed. They focused on the lifestyle and environment trends followed by real users in order to establish their direction for creating a product that provides genuinely enriching experiences. “We worked hard to design a product that presents new experiences thanks to its innovative technologies, while at the same time blending seamlessly in with the user’s furniture and other décor items,” added Bang. “We obtained a lot of inspiration from the space usages, furniture choices and trending objet d’arts we came across during this initial design process.”

What might be a user’s biggest reason for purchasing a projector? Perhaps so that they can enjoy media more vibrantly on a larger screen, or to add a subtle piece of interior décor flair to a space they otherwise don’t want to place a large TV in. The Premiere’s design team paid close attention to such thinking when developing The Premiere, ensuring that its exterior wouldn’t overwhelm the space it is placed in wherever that may be. “The simplistic design of The Premiere doesn’t stand out too much as an interior décor piece since it naturally blends into the space,” explained Jigwang Kim. “Users can enjoy unparalleled immersive experiences when enjoying content displayed on an entire wall.”

The designers worked diligently on The Premiere’s silhouette to ensure that the projector is able to blend harmoniously into its surroundings as opposed to standing out. The no-frills elements it is composed of, including its round outline and slim lines, complete its overall sleek and soft design. “The projector is able to match other components a user might have nearby, such as a table or a vase, so it’s perfect for those who enjoy minimalistic interior décor,” suggested Jigwang Kim.

Innovative Features Designed for User Comfort

Product design choices are always ultimately made for the user so that they can enjoy their product anytime, anywhere. Due to the common perception that typical projectors can require laborious installation as a certain amount of distance is required between the wall and the projector, as well as the space limitations this can cause, Samsung implemented ultra-short focal point triple laser beam technology. This technology allows The Premiere’s users to enjoy a 4K video up to 330.2cm in size even when the projector is placed as close as 23.8cm to the wall.

As the world’s first HDR10+ projector, The Premiere offers a maximum brightness of 2,800 ANSI lumens. The Premiere also delivers a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, meaning that the projector is able to express all the subtle contrasts and detailing in darker images. Furthermore, “the projector comes with Acoustic Beam speakers that provide deep, 3-dimensional, room-filling sound without the need for any separate speakers,” added Jigwang Kim.

Another leading feature of The Premiere is its smart hub, which allows users to watch all kinds of content and media – requiring only an Internet connection. “The Premiere allows the user to enjoy what they want hassle-free, as there’s no need to connect separate devices to it. It is also connected to SmartThings, so users can monitor and operate their smart home appliances directly from their projector.”

A Stand-Out Design That Blends Seamlessly Thanks to Sophisticated Materials

The_Premier_Interview_Designer_main4F.jp

As opposed to being a hard, cold-looking home appliance, The Premiere has been designed to provide warmth so as to seamlessly blend in to any domestic space. A stand-out feature of its design is the material choice – the design team opted to cover the product with a premium fabric in order to give the projector its warmth and sophistication. “This fabric encompasses a subtle abundance of colors and sophisticated weaving – it is in fact often used for premium brands’ sofas, chairs and other fabric items,” noted Junpyo Kim. “The projector achieves congruity with the space in which it is placed because it has been carefully designed to go well with furniture items.”

The_Premier_Interview_Designer_main5F.jp

However, it wasn’t as simple as it might appear for the design team to be able to fit The Premiere with this premium fabric finish. Since such materials are traditionally used for furniture, the fabric had been designed for a different purpose. “The fabric’s weave structure is denser than other fabrics, meaning that it would affect the sound quality if it were to cover the projector’s speakers,” noted Junpyo Kim. “While this brought about challenges during the design stage, we didn’t want to give up on the uniquely warm and sturdy appearance this fabric provided. Therefore, we increased the aperture ratio of the woven fabric in order to maintain its characteristics while also maintaining optimum sound quality.”

If you are thinking of transforming your space into a movie theater with truly immersive experiences, or a concert hall full of music – or even a stadium during a sports match, why not try out The Premiere, a projector capable of completely transforming the ambience of the room where it’s placed with ease.

Double the AI Performance for Enhanced Neo QLED 8K Picture Quality

Samsung’s newest Neo QLED 8K and 4K TVs offer the full package, including lifelike picture quality, premium audio technology and a rich array of apps and services. At its core, the 2024 Neo QLED 8K is Samsung’s latest and most innovative TV processor yet: NQ8 AI Gen3, which has a neural processing unit (NPU) that is twice as fast as that of its predecessor. Infinity Air Design: Complements Neo QLED 8K’s impeccable picture quality with a screen only 12.9mm in depth,3 allowing for an immersive viewing experience that focuses on high resolution and outstanding sound quality. It is also offers a unique mirror effect in which the TV appears to hover in its surroundings.
The performance of the Neo QLED 8K is rounded out by immaculate audio quality, on par with the stunning 8K picture quality on screen.

2024 Q-Symphony: Allows users to connect multiple wireless speakers and a soundbar to a TV or projector for perfect audio synchronization across shows, movies, and playlists. It’s a technology that perfectly synchronizes TV with wireless speakers and a soundbar. Multi Control: Allows more efficient work from home by giving users control of all their screens — including TVs, smartphones, and monitors — with a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse. Users can experience a different way to work by copying and pasting, reading documents and more across devices.
Samsung’s latest 2024 TVs and screens also come with greater compatibility across various devices within the ecosystem, allowing a more integrated connection between TVs and smartphones or wearable devices for a greater level of customization, accessibility and convenience.

Mobile Smart Connect: All of the new featured apps and services are easily controlled with the SmartThings Mobile Plugin, which transforms the smartphone into a multi-functional remote that offers users greater control over their screens. With a straightforward pop-up interface and a customizable UI, the app provides convenience and enhanced accessibility. 360 Audio: The audio feature, previously offered on Galaxy devices, has also expanded to Samsung TVs and screens. Now, Samsung Galaxy Buds seamlessly connect to TVs to deliver spatial audio for movies, shows and even gaming titles, so users can be truly immersed in visual content and gameplay. Vibrary: Enjoy your favorite artist’s high-quality images via the big screen of your TV. With Ambient Mode, you can be welcomed every day by your favorite artist. You can also enjoy photos and music from TV and mobile devices through Casting, providing a seamless viewing experience.
The latest TV and screen lineup also boasts enhanced accessibility offerings, allowing more consumers to enjoy their favorite content on Samsung Neo QLED than ever before.

Audio Subtitle: The world’s first on-device TV feature that uses AI and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to provide a voice guide for embedded subtitles in real-time. Remote for Barrier Free: An app designed for users with visual, auditory or physical disabilities by enabling more thoughtful TV control via smartphones. The highly customizable app incorporates UI enhancements such as intuitive button placement, distinct colors and tactile feedback, while also integrating Samsung’s latest accessibility features such as voice guides for easy access right from the smartphone. Relumino Together Mode: Relumino is a feature that enables people with low vision to enjoy their favorite TV shows, movies and games without the need for wearable hardware. With AI technology dynamically outlining the edges of on-screen elements and rebalance colors, the feature enables users with low vision to more clearly see people and objects. Relumino Together Mode provides standard screens and Relumino Mode screens side-by-side, so people with low vision and their families can enjoy TV together.

MICRO LED: Pushing the Boundaries of Display Technology
With the new transparent MICRO LED, Samsung is showing the world that there are infinite possibilities for screens. The screen, which looks like a piece of transparent glass, boasts an extremely small MICRO LED chip and precision manufacturing process that eliminates seams and light refraction. This allows the transparent MICRO LED to create a clear, unobstructed picture for various use cases in both homes and B2B environments.

Touting a modular design that allows users to personalize the shape, size and ratio of screens to fit any space, MICRO LED is a truly innovative screen technology. Samsung’s years of research and development — stemming from its semiconductor expertise — have led to an extremely effective process, allowing LED chip operation circuits to be directly deposited on the glass and thereby mitigating the loss of brightness that users may experience with conventional displays.

Offering Wider OLED Lineups To Meet Consumer Preferences

Samsung’s 2024 OLED TVs build on the legacy of last year’s models, with the S95D offering an ultra-large 77-inch canvas for high-detail, a high-frame rate and intensely vibrant video. The display is 20% brighter than previous models, with deep and rich blacks and AI-enhanced color accuracy so pure that it’s Pantone Validated. Samsung has also introduced the S90D and S85D in various sizes, from 42” to 83’’.6

New ‘OLED Glare Free’ technology7 — specifically designed for 2024 OLED screens — preserves color accuracy and reduces reflections while maintaining image sharpness to ensure an immersive viewing experience, even in daylight. The OLED-optimized, low-reflection coating overcomes the trade-off between gloss and reflection thanks to a new, specialized hard-coating layer and surface coating pattern.

The S95D’s screen will captivate audiences with advanced, proprietary picture-quality engines that preserve perfect whites, deeper blacks and accurate colors. In addition to being Samsung’s brightest OLED screen yet, it also features high refresh rates of up to 144Hz, so sports fans and gamers can enjoy seamless motion and crystal-clear action on their screens.

The projector incorporates Samsung’s patented “Sound-on-Screen” technology, integrating the top speaker module and software algorithms for an immersive sound experience. The Freestyle 2nd Gen: The second iteration of the portable projector features Smart Edge Blending, which supports seamless merging of projections from two The Freestyle devices to create a large screen for pictures and videos. It allows two devices to project an image as big as 160-inches with a 21:9 screen ratio, with no manual adjustment needed.

New Soundbars for Immersive Audio Experience
To top off a home entertainment set up, the 2024 soundbar lineup offers newly updated models for even more immersive audio experiences, which are particularly bolstered by advanced AI algorithms.

Music Frame: This customizable speaker is compatible with SmartThings and provides surround sound when paired with Samsung TVs and soundbars. Music Frame can either operate as a standalone wireless speaker or pair with a Samsung TV and soundbar via Q-Symphony to augment bass and surround sound. Seamlessly blending into its environment by camouflaging itself inside modern picture frames, Music Frame provides high-quality sound without being an eyesore. HW-Q990D: This soundbar features a 11.1.4-channel configuration, immersive Dolby Atmos sound and supports pass through of content in 4K 120Hz. It analyzes audio and uses AI to optimize sound for the perfect experience across a wide range of content. At only a third of the depth of conventional soundbars, the S800D has 10 drivers, including dedicated overhead speakers and a center channel for crystal-clear vocals. The combination of a deep bass subwoofer and a passive radiator also enhances the listening experience with deep, distortion-free bass in a compact form factor.
Samsung’s 2024 TV lineup promises a seamless fusion of cutting-edge technology and user-centric design, setting the stage for personalized, immersive experiences that redefine the way people live and engage with their devices.

Samsung Electronics today showcased its latest innovations for the connected home. During its IFA 2023 press conference, the company highlighted its vision for SmartThings is to enable consumers across Europe to prioritise the topics they care about — from saving energy, increasing security and access to great entertainment to making their everyday lives more efficient. The ever-growing SmartThings ecosystem allows its 285 million users to adapt and personalise their homes to suit their needs, seamlessly connecting and controlling multiple appliances and devices via one app.

Samsung’s presence at IFA 2023 comes as the company shares new consumer research, conducted across Europe to understand evolving needs for technology in the home.1

“Samsung is passionate about connecting our users to the people, places and pastimes that matter most to them,” said Benjamin Braun, Chief Marketing Officer, Samsung Europe. “We will continue to take advantage of the possibilities offered by the latest innovations in technology to make sure the SmartThings ecosystem grows and develops in a way that allows people to make even more of the connections that matter.”

      Enhancing the At-Home Experience
The SmartThings app allows users to control their homes from anywhere, helping them to enjoy seamless entertainment as well as keeping them safe. Across Europe, our homes continue to be more important than ever as they play multiple roles each day — from offices to places for relaxation and entertainment. Seven in ten consumers (71%) agree that technology has a positive impact on their everyday living, including how they interact with their friends and family, how they conduct their chores and how they enjoy their hobbies.¹

Now, those with a passion for food can fully connect themselves to the joy of cooking and eating with Samsung Food, the new all-in-one app for recipe searching, saving and sharing, meal planning, cooking and grocery shopping. Announced at the press conference, Samsung Food is available in 104 countries and eight languages and puts the world’s food knowledge at users’ fingertips, empowering them to make the food, health and cooking decisions that are right for them. It also connects to users’ kitchens, instantly sending the right time and temperature to their compatible Samsung oven. With more than 160,000 recipes, there will always be something new to cook.

By the end of the year, using Food AI, Samsung Food will provide personalised recipes reflecting users’ dietary requirements, such as converting recipes into a vegan version in just a few taps. In a further enhancement due later this year, it will link with Samsung Health so tailored meal plans can be adapted to suit preferences and dietary requirements, as well as support users in reaching their health goals. In 2024, using Vision AI technology, Samsung Food will use photos taken of meals to check nutritional information, recognise ingredients and recommend the best recipes to use them in.

As the number one TV brand for 17 years in a row,2 Samsung has an unrivalled commitment to entertainment. It has completed its super screen line up with the launch of the 98” Neo QLED 8K and 4K Q80C and plans to bring its full range of Micro LED screens to Europe by the end of the year, offering incredible contrast and jaw-dropping detail that places viewers in the middle of the action whether gaming or watching films.

To celebrate Disney’s 100th anniversary, Samsung has announced the launch of The Frame — Disney100 Edition. Featuring an exclusive bezel in the Disney 100 signature platinum silver metal and a unique Mickey Mouse inspired Disney remote. It also comes with 100 pieces of iconic art from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel, Lucasfilm and National Geographic, as well as classic images of Mickey, Minnie, Woody, Cinderella and many others. Users can also display their family photos for a magical home environment.

Also announced at the press conference was the global launch of The Freestyle 2nd Gen. This versatile, portable projector delivers a big screen experience wherever the user chooses — even on the ceiling. The Smart Edge Blending feature offers landscape and portrait screen experiences, meaning two Freestyle 2nd Gen projectors can be paired to give a 160” panoramic and 120” vertical viewing experience. What is more, with complete access to the Samsung Gaming Hub, users of the Freestyle 2nd Gen can enjoy the biggest games from Samsung’s streaming partners.

In partnership with Xbox and Bethesda Softworks, this now includes Starfield, the stunning, next-generation role-playing game set amongst the stars. Playable through the Samsung Gaming Hub with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership, without the need for a console.

Taking Small Steps for Our Planet
Samsung is committed to developing products and services that help people save money and take steps towards a better planet. These topics are high on the agenda for consumers too, over three quarters (77%) say they seek out tech products that save energy — not only to save money, but for the benefit of the environment too.4 Two-thirds (67%) also consider it important that their next appliance can connect to an app that allows them to monitor and reduce their energy consumption.4

With energy prices increasing across Europe,3 72% of those asked are concerned about the cost of running appliances in their home.4 To help combat this, SmartThings Energy can help users optimise the energy used across their appliances to suit their needs and lower usage. For example, AI Energy Mode in SmartThings Energy allows you to monitor and reduce your washing machine’s energy use by up to 70%5 by using Ecobubble to wash with cool water instead of warm.

Samsung has also partnered with global ocean conservation organisation Ocean Wise and apparel maker Patagonia to find solutions to the issue of microfiber shedding. The Less Microfiber Filter is an external washing machine filter that cuts up to 98% of microplastic emissions from laundry cycles.6 Speaking at IFA, Charlie Cox, Manager of Microplastic Solutions at Ocean Wise said, “Through our collaboration with Samsung and Patagonia, Ocean Wise is proud to have shown a way for industry to play its part in stemming the flow of microfibers into the ocean. Through innovations like the Less Microfiber Filter, we can empower individuals to reduce their microfiber footprint at home. It is a simple, everyday solution that our oceans will thank us for.”

Heating technologies like heat pumps represent a rapidly growing market, and Samsung is at the forefront of this growth. Its innovative smart air source heat pumps have seen an unprecedented 97% growth in sales since 2022.7 These work with domestic hot water tanks or with Samsung’s ClimateHub, to make your home comfortable all year round, whatever the weather. They can also connect to the SmartThings ecosystem, so their energy use can be monitored and tailored to the user’s preferred environment.8 The latest addition to its range of high temperature monobloc heat pump solutions, the EHS Mono R290, launches in September.

Samsung’s journey is constantly evolving as it aims to design technology that helps people make the most of their day while taking small steps to reduce our environmental impact. The Galaxy Z Flip59 and Z Fold510 and the Galaxy Tab S9 series11 feature a variety of recycled materials, including recycled aluminium, glass and plastics sourced from ocean-bound discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles. Even the Galaxy Watch6 series incorporate post-consumer recycled plastics. All of these Galaxy innovations come in packaging boxes made using recycled paper material.12

      Keeping Your Home Secure
Samsung understands the reassurance that smart technology can provide across the generations. Security was an emerging theme from the research conducted. Watching their home while they aren’t there (54%), feeling safer when home alone (39%) and keeping their family safe when they are out of the house (39%) are seen as the key safety benefits of smart technology.13

The SmartThings ecosystem includes a range of partners who are committed to helping people keep their homes and loved ones safe. This now includes Yale, a leading brand in home security. The Yale Linus® Smart Lock and the new Smart Opener for Gate & Garage enable doors and gates to be locked remotely via the app to ensure peace of mind for all family members.

Unlocking the Future Through Smart Technology
Samsung is invested in a future built around the possibilities that technology can unlock. One area it aims to make a difference is in making the technology for smart homes more easily available. The research shows a quarter of Europeans consider the inclusion of smart technology to be a key factor in the desirability of their next home and over three quarters of respondents said fully functional smart homes are appealing (77%).12

Understanding this, Samsung is working to make these possibilities a reality and it believes in the power of collaboration when it comes to driving this vision forward. By partnering with ABB Smart Buildings and SMA, one of the world’s leading providers of photovoltaic and storage system technology, it hopes to connect people more closely to their homes by embedding the possibilities of smart technology into houses before they are bought. By integrating ABB and SMA products into SmartThings Energy, homes can become even safer, smarter and more sustainable. For example, the ability to run appliances at the optimum time, tracking energy use to adjust consumption based on energy prices and usage patterns and optimising energy use based on solar production.

Other than the US, all other international Galaxy S23 buyers are in for a price hike across the board. That is the consensus, with leaks indicating that all three Galaxy S23 models will be more expensive than their Galaxy S22 counterparts outside the States. The Galaxy S23, S23 Plus, and Ultra will be a lot more exciting than their predecessors, which might help make the price hike more bearable. But then there’s the economy to factor in, which might prevent some people from buying the newest handsets.
With preorders coming up on February 1st, you have two options to save money on the Galaxy S23. One of them is the easiest one to take advantage of. Samsung is already offering up to $100 off if you reserve the Galaxy S23 now, and there will be other discounts and bundle deals to tack on at launch. The other option is waiting a few months for prices to drop.
Why Galaxy S23 preorders are so exciting
Samsung had to endure a humiliating defeat with the Galaxy S22 series, but it was the South Korean company’s own fault. It can fix that with the Galaxy S23, and that’s precisely what Samsung wants to do.
The Galaxy S23 phones will be better in every way than their predecessors. We’re looking at the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 powering the three phones in all markets. It’s also a custom System-on-Chip (SoC), running at higher clock speeds than the regular Gen 2 chips.
Add to that new speed boosts for the RAM and flash memory, and the Galaxy S23 handsets should deliver significant speed gains. Furthermore, the Plus and Ultra get big storage boosts, starting at 256GB. And the Galaxy S23 Ultra will feature a massive camera upgrade, with a brand new 200-megapixel primary camera.

Rumors say Galaxy S23 preorder deals will double the storage for free, which is excellent news for buyers who want more flash memory. Remember that Samsung flagships do not support microSD cards.
Samsung and carriers might throw additional incentives during preorders, including trade-in offers that can significantly reduce the Galaxy S23 preorder price.
But not everyone will be eligible. And there will be buyers who want to avoid dealing with trade-ins or carrier-locked phones.
When to buy the Galaxy S23 to get a better price
In case you’re not comfortable paying the full retail price for the Galaxy S23 during preorders, there’s one other way to get a great deal. You can skip preorders and wait a few months for the price to drop.
You’ll lose out on the preorder deals, including the reservation credit. But you might be looking at up to 20% savings on the Galaxy S23, S23 Plus, and Ultra. So says Idealo, via the Italian-language blog Tutto Android.
According to the research firm, you’ll have to wait about five months for the Galaxy S23 prices to drop by 20%. While that’s just an estimate, we’ll remind you that Android flagships do not retain their value like iPhones. They almost always lose significant value after launch.

After five months, you’re looking at a 20% price drop for the handset. The Galaxy S23 Plus might see a 24% drop within four months after launch. Finally, the Galaxy S23 Ultra could see the price drop by 20% in four months.
Again, this is all just an estimate for the moment, but it’s based on data from the previous flagships, including the Galaxy S22 and S21.
If you can’t buy the Galaxy S23 at launch and want the best possible price, your best bet is to wait a few months to score a sweeter deal. Whatever you do, don’t get a cheaper Galaxy S22 instead while you wait.

Samsung just launched a new 100-day “Buy and Try” promo for the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold 2 foldable phones. Buyers can try either device for more than three months before deciding whether to keep the handset. Several additional promotions can lower the entry price for both devices. The 100-day trial promo expires on April 1st. Foldable phones are getting better and better with each new generation, but they’re not quite where we’d want them to be. The price remains prohibitive, and there’s always the worry that foldable phones might not handle accidents with grace. But foldable phones are part of the future, and Samsung’s move signals that foldable phones will play a big role in its smartphone strategy going forward. Samsung has just announced a program that’s too good to pass up if you qualify. You need to be interested in foldable phones and ready to pay the price tag of the Galaxy Z Flip or Galaxy Z Fold 2. You also need to make up your mind by April 1st. If you’ve checked all those boxes, then you’ll be able to try the foldable version of your choice for 100 days, which is the best offer available for essentially test driving an exciting phone you don’t intend to keep.

Samsung is practically extending the return period from 15 days to 100 days, which isn’t something you’ll get when buying other mobile devices, whether they’re made from Samsung or someone else. You’ll be able to try the foldable phone of your choice for more than three months before deciding on whether to keep it or getting a traditional phone instead.
Samsung is taking a big risk here, but the upside is that more people will get to use the Flips and the Folds, and some of them might convert to actual users. The Galaxy Z Flip sells for $1,199.99, while the Z Fold 2 starts at $1,999.99. Samsung’s promo will help it move more stock even before other companies start launching new devices, including new foldable handsets. It’s usually in February and March that Android vendors launch new devices for the first half of the year. Samsung beat everyone to the punch with its mid-January Galaxy S21 announcement.
The new “Buy and Try” program is only available on Samsung.com, and you have until April 1st to take advantage of the offer. Samsung offers up to $550 instant trade-in for the offer as well as $200 instant credit for accessories. This would make it even easier to pay for these expensive foldables should you decide to keep them, as long as you’re willing to trade-in your. The trade-in credit goes up to $600 if you’re switching from certain versions of the iPhone.
Additional savings might be available depending on the type of buyer — employer discount, students, government, military, and public safety. Before you decide whether to test this unique 100-day “Buy and Try” foldables program, make sure you read all of Samsung’s documentation. Terms and conditions will apply, as with any program, and you’ll have to ensure the device isn’t damaged during the trial program to get the full amount you paid for the phone back.
