Matter support

The interoperable smart home project Matter is finally available as the Connectivity Standards Alliance and its members release a finalized first iteration of the standard and certification program. With that, it will be easier to integrate home appliances in a single solution, whether it’s controlled by Apple’s Siri, Google’s Assistant, Amazon’s Alexa, or Samsung.

According to the press release, “member companies who make up all facets of the IoT now have a complete program for bringing the next generation of interoperable products that work across brands and platforms to market with greater privacy, security, and simplicity for consumers.”

“What started as a mission to unravel the complexities of connectivity has resulted in Matter, a single, global IP-based protocol that will fundamentally change the IoT,” said Tobin Richardson, President and CEO of the Connectivity Standards Alliance. “This release is the first step on a journey our community and the industry are taking to make the IoT more simple, secure, and valuable no matter who you are or where you live.  With global support from companies large and small, today’s Matter 1.0 release is more than a milestone for our organization and our members; it is a celebration of what is possible.

Over 280 member companies, which include Amazon, Apple, Comcast, Google, and Samsung’s SmartThings, have worked on bringing their technologies, experiences, and innovations into a single standard called Matter.

Over the next few weeks and months, we’ll be able to see the first batch of products already supporting this standard as well as the companies updating older products to also work with Matter’s interoperability.

“Matter and Thread resolve interoperability and connectivity issues in smart homes so manufacturers can focus on other value-adding innovations,” Thread Group president Vividh Siddha said.

In the meantime, Apple is reading new updates to its operating systems to make sure Matter is fully supported. iOS 16.1 beta version finally added support to this standard. This will also be the tvOS 16 most important feature once it’s available to all users.

Samsung Electronics, the world’s leading TV manufacturer for 18 consecutive years, has commenced its annual series of Tech Seminars in Frankfurt, Germany. From February 20 to 22, Samsung will showcase its newest display lineup for 2024 that features new, innovative AI technology and smart features on the Neo QLED, OLED and Lifestyle products to professionals in Europe.

Tech Seminar sessions are a longstanding program, having delivered detailed information and exclusive hands-on experiences with new products for the past 13 years. As part of Samsung’s visual display vision — “We look out of the box to inspire new ways of life” — this year the company is displaying select, cutting-edge technologies from its 2024 lineup that offer new lifestyles and new ways of consuming content.

The 2024 Tizen OS brings content front and center, offering a personalized experience based on different accounts set up on smart TVs. Tizen features services such as Samsung Gaming Hub, an all-in-one game streaming discovery platform, with content recommendations for a convenient and tailored cloud gaming experience. An app that I would like to download and use (CAIWAY WebTV) is only supported by Tizen OS 5.0, but my Samsung TV is running on Tizen 4.0, so the app cannot be found. I updated the TV software to the latest version, but this does not update the Tizen OS itself. Is there a way to update the Tizen OS itself?

Unparalleled Viewing Experiences on an AI-Powered 8K Display
As a TV market leader for nearly two decades, Samsung’s premium displays have continually set the standard for viewing experiences. Building off this expertise, Samsung integrated AI technology into its TVs to create the 2024 Neo QLED 8K — offering users superior viewing experiences with the latest technical features.

▲ Attendees viewed the Neo QLED 8K display section at the Samsung First Look event on January 7 (local time).

The Neo QLED 8K contains the NQ8 AI Gen3 Processor, the company’s most advanced AI-powered processor to date. The processor supports a neural processing unit (NPU) that is twice as fast as previous versions and an AI neural network eight times larger than before. As the processor utilizes deep learning and 8K AI Upscaling Pro technology, it automatically adjusts image and sound quality, delivering picture-perfect 8K content every time.

▲ Attendees tested out the AI Motion Enhancer Pro and Active Voice Amplifier Pro functions of the Neo QLED 8K display, optimizing content for at-home viewing.

Visitors to the zone could also learn about the new AI Motion Enhancer Pro and Active Voice Amplifier Pro functionality of the Neo QLED 8K which help to minimize distractions while viewing. The AI Motion Enhancer Pro utilizes a sophisticated motion detection algorithm to enhance clarity during motion-intense content, such as sports games, helping users enjoy every moment of a match. Similarly, the Active Voice Amplifier Pro feature utilizes AI to analyze and separate aspects of sound to provide optimal sound for different types of content. For instance, users can choose to minimize or enhance the background noise from a conversation — helping them catch every word without distractions.

▲ Enhanced by Samsung’s Tizen OS, the Neo QLED 8K display offers expanded connectivity between the display and a multitude of Samsung devices.

To provide opportunity for further customization, the 2024 Neo QLED 8K comes equipped with Samsung’s open-source operating system Tizen. As part of this, Daily+ enables users to adjust their content viewing experience by connecting their Samsung devices, such as Galaxy smartwatches, Galaxy Buds, Galaxy smartphones and more, to their display. As such, users can view exercise data from their Galaxy Watch while working out and mirror video calls from their smartphone conveniently on their TV.

▲ For a seamless appearance in any interior, the Infinity Air Stand features a minimalistic design that blends into the space.

Samsung also displayed its Infinity Air Design of the 2024 Neo QLED 8K that boasts a slim profile. Mounted on the Infinity Air Stand, the display appeared to be floating above ground. With this seamless and simple design, viewers can stay focused on the content without being distracted by clunky stands or display setups.

A High-Definition MICRO LED Display Built for Every Consumer

Upon entering the space, visitors can experience the overwhelming sense of realism created by the 140-inch ultra-large MICRO LED display. Since the screen is bezel-less and modular, the size, resolution and ratio can be freely scaled and adjusted according to user preferences. Additionally, the new line of 2024 MICRO LED displays come in a new 140-inch size option, giving consumers another option in line with the trend of large screens.

▲ Samsung provided attendees with an in-depth look at the meticulous development process for the MICRO LED technology.

To give visitors a glimpse of the artistry and ingenuity behind MICRO LED technology, the Screen Experience Zone displayed the MICRO LED Craftsmanship Wall — representing the countless hours of work needed to develop the screen.

▲ Attendees learned about the groundbreaking technology used in the Transparent MICRO LED, a display characterized by its eye-catching, glass-like appearance.

▲ Spanning across the back wall of the zone, the Transparent MICRO LED was the main highlight for many guests at the event.

Additionally, Samsung showed off its Transparent MICRO LED screens, which feature a strikingly clear design that mirrors that of glass.

With its upgraded functionality, Ballie can interact with and control IoT home devices to create the perfect home environment. To help users start their day, Ballie can open the curtains according to a user’s preferred wake-up time. When preparing for the day ahead, Ballie can project a variety of content — such as daily news or weather conditions — on the floor or wall. Additionally, Ballie can monitor pets and family members when a user is away from home, automatically alerting them in the event of an emergency.

Additionally, using the new Now+ SmartThings Hub function, users can monitor their home on their TV even when they’re not viewing content. If movement is detected, the Now+ Widget automatically appears on the screen, providing summaries on home energy usage, weather conditions, home information and more. When watching content, users can easily toggle the setting off from the quick menu to not be disturbed.

Immersion Taken to the Next Level
