iPhone 14 Pro beats Galaxy S23 Ultra as fastest smartphone
The Galaxy S23, S23 Plus, and Ultra will start shipping this week to buyers who preorder the handset. The phones rock impressive hardware that should deliver great performance. We’re looking at a custom Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip across the board, plus faster storage and faster RAM. But the Galaxy S23 isn’t the fastest phone in town, and it won’t outperform the iPhone 14, 13, or 12 in benchmark tests.
Moreover, a recent gaming performance test showed that the Galaxy S23 Ultra can barely match the iPhone SE that Apple launched last year. The mid-range iPhone features the same A15 Bionic chip as the iPhone 13 series and base iPhone 14 models.
YouTube channel Golden Reviewer put the Galaxy S23 Ultra through the same Genshin Impact gaming test it uses for other smartphones.
The best Galaxy S23 model managed to pull ahead of all Samsung phones the YouTuber tested previously. But the Galaxy S23 Ultra wasn’t in the top 10 with its performance. The phone reached an average of 55 frames per second during the 10-minute gaming session. It also heated up to a max temperature of 43.6ºC (110.48ºF).
Right below the Galaxy S23 Ultra, we have the iPhone SE 2022. The mid-range handset managed to reach 54 frames per second at a temperature of 45.1ºC (113.18ºF). The iPhone’s average power consumption is another big win for the iPhone. Samsung is far from offering the same efficiency as Apple.

Image source: YouTube Unsurprisingly, the Galaxy S23 Ultra did worse than the iPhone 14 Pro Max (A16 Bionic) and iPhone 14 Plus (A15 Bionic). As we’ve explained before, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus feature a slightly better A15 variant and much better cooling than the iPhone 13.
What’s interesting is that other Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered devices fared better in the same test. The Xiaomi 13 Pro topped 59.4 frames per second, registering a peak temperature of only 39.3ºC (102.74ºF). Other Xiaomi flagships featuring last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chip also did better in the real-life gaming test than Samsung’s 2023 flagship, as seen above.
As for other Samsung phones, the new handset is a much better gaming device than the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Last year’s flagship managed 42.1 frames per second in the gaming test, overheating to 46.5 ºC (115.7ºF) in the process.
The conclusion is on par with previous Galaxy S23 Ultra performance tests we’ve seen. The new phones feature high-end hardware that’s superior to last year’s Galaxy S22 series. But the new handsets aren’t the most powerful flagships in town. Samsung still has work to do, both when it comes to optimizing the software and cooling the handset.

Last year, Apple introduced its first monitor in three years. The Studio Display has a 5K resolution on a 27-inch screen, excellent speakers, the A13 Bionic chip, and a 1080p webcam with Central Stage support. While the company didn’t add a better technology than the traditional LED display – or HDR support – this monitor is one of the best you can find if you’re looking for a 5K resolution at this size.
Now, Samsung is launching not one but two competitors to the Apple Studio Display with the ViewFinity S9 and a revised version of its Smart Monitor M8, first released last year.
With the ViewFinity S9 monitor, Samsung promises “smart color calibration designed for creative professionals.” With a 5K 27-inch screen, the South Korean company says the display is optimized for creative professionals “for the first time.”
Different from the Studio Display, Samsung ViewFinity S9 doesn’t offer a built-in webcam. Still, users can connect cameras and other devices to the monitor through USB-C and Thunderbolt 4 ports or use the 4K SlimFit camera with the ViewFinity S9 series monitor. The company hasn’t announced the price or other specs but says it will be available soon.
Samsung Smart Monitor M8 now comes in a 27-inch option. Image source: Samsung Another screen that can be a Studio Display replacement is Samsung Smart Monitor M8. Now in a new 27-inch size, it offers a 4k resolution in four color options that resemble the 24-inch iMac finishes.
It has a height-adjustable stand with tilt support, and the screen can now pivot 90 degrees, which helps users view long documents with less scrolling. In addition, the Smart Monitor M8 can be used to watch streaming services or control the SmartThings ecosystem.
Samsung has yet to reveal their prices and availability, but these monitors will surely be Apple Studio Display’s true competitor.

Samsung is the king of the foldable market right now because it was one of the first companies to launch phones that fold. Another reason for that dominance is the absence of real competitors. Several Chinese foldable handsets could compete against the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4, but they’re unavailable internationally. The main reason Samsung can brag about being the market leader in this segment is the absence of a foldable iPhone.
A few weeks ago, Samsung launched a new ad campaign to mock Apple for not having a foldable iPhone. After all these years, Samsung has not given up on making fun of the iPhone. That’s even though Apple sells millions of expensive iPhones every year, a feat Samsung can’t match with its foldable and non-foldable Galaxy flagships.
The new Samsung ad is part of the On the Fence campaign that Samsung started in early November. Like the previous spot, we have the same iPhone user, sitting on the fence between Apple and Samsung, unsure of what to do next.
The man starts a conversation with a woman who tells him she used to be him. “Sitting on the fence between Apple and Samsung.” The man is interested in a Samsung device but worries about what his friends will think if he gets it. But the woman explains that everyone around him will be jealous.
“When you pull out your new Galaxy Z Flip 4, people are going to lose it,” she says. “They’ll never leave you alone.”
The idea here is clear, Samsung has a type of handset that Apple doesn’t make. There’s no foldable iPhone to compete against the Galaxy Z Flip 4. But it’s not like people are hurrying to buy foldable Galaxy phones.
The Flip 4 is reasonably priced, matching the cost of traditional flagship phones. Yet it can’t match the popularity of non-foldable iPhones, like the iPhone 14 Pro models.
That must hurt Samsung terribly in real life. In the ad, however, Samsung wins the customer over. He’s no longer on the fence, jumping over to Samsung to embrace the foldable handset. As soon as he does, iPhone users from the other side start pestering him with questions.
There’s no telling when Apple will make a foldable iPhone if it’s even considering it. Instead, the company might launch foldable tablets or MacBooks before a foldable iPhone. As for Samsung, the lack of real competition is hurting its foldables rather than helping it gain more customers.

Samsung has a new anti-Apple ad called “On the Fence” that focuses on foldable smartphones, iPhone included. But it doesn’t promote the qualities of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 or Flip 4, phones that Samsung launched only a few months ago. Nor does it mention the great price of the latter or any types of deals for consumers.
The ad is all about Apple not having a foldable iPhone. It’s about bashing Apple rather than promoting its own devices. That’s at a time when the iPhone 14 Pro models have been selling incredibly well. It must mean that people aren’t exactly flocking to buy Samsung’s foldables. That would not be surprising in this economy, as everyone in the mobile industry but Apple seems to be struggling.
Samsung released an anti-iPhone 14 ad in early September, just days before Apple’s big iPhone 14 launch event. Samsung criticized the unreleased iPhone, claiming its Galaxy products have better cameras than the upcoming device.
As we explained, Samsung’s Galaxy S22 is hardly the flagship series that Samsung wanted it to be. The handset disappointed fans from the first day thanks to Samsung’s decision to cripple its performance. That was just one thing that held the Galaxy S22 back. You didn’t see any of that in Samsung’s anti-iPhone 14 ad.
The new ad is all the more incredible as it criticizes Apple for not having a foldable iPhone. In fairness, Samsung certainly needs that sort of competition. It might be the leader of the foldable market right now, but that’s precisely because it doesn’t feel any pressure from rivals.

We already explained that Samsung needs a foldable iPhone to deliver better foldables of its own. At the same time, it’s reasonable to expect the foldable iPhone to crush the foldable Galaxy devices.
The ad shows a person sitting on the fence between an Apple store and a Samsung store. That’s somewhat disingenuous as Samsung hardly has a store presence comparable to Apple’s.
Still, the “on the fence” consumer tells the Apple employee that “on the Samsung side, they have folding phones and epic cameras.” The Apple employee responds, “we’re waiting for all that to come over here,” to the customer’s dismay. “Because that’s what we do. We wait,” the Apple employee continues.
Samsung probably dreads the day when the foldable iPhone arrives. But also hopes it’ll happen, as Samsung might sell Apple parts for such an iPhone.
Rumors say that Apple is working on foldable devices, although it might not be an iPhone that gets such treatment first. According to some reports, Apple might develop a foldable iPad before the iPhone. And it so happens that Samsung expects Apple will make a foldable iPad in 2024.

Rumors about Apple launching a foldable device aren’t new. This time, Samsung is preparing for the Cupertino company to join a market that the South Korean firm currently has the lead. While everyone expects a foldable iPhone, Samsung doesn’t think this will be the first Apple device to bend.
According to a report by The Elec, Samsung thinks the foldable market will grow 80% by 2025, and one of the reasons will be Apple joining the competition in 2024. Samsung’s mobile business, Mobile Experience, said that the Cupertino company would enter the foldable market, not with smartphones, but with notebooks and tablets first.

One of the reasons why Apple won’t likely launch a foldable iPhone at first is not to cannibalize the existing iPhones as, according to the analyst, the foldable option would have to be “incredibly expensive.”
Early this year, display analyst Ross Young said Apple was mulling a 20-inch foldable MacBook display, which could also be an iPad. Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman also corroborated Apple entering this new market.
Both analysts Ming-Chi Kuo and Ross Young expect a foldable iPhone to be introduced in 2025 at the earliest. In a couple of years from now, a foldable iPad/MacBook makes more sense.
