2022 is nearly over, which means a whole new year of smartphone releases lies ahead. Usually, Samsung is the first major vendor on the scene with its latest flagship. According to a recent leak, that will be the case again in 2023. Prolific Twitter leaker Ice Universe claims that Samsung plans to host its next Galaxy Unpacked event on February 1st, which is where we expect the company to reveal the Galaxy S23 series to the public. In early November, a report from the Korean newspaper Chosun suggested Samsung was going to launch the Galaxy S23 in the first week of February. A few weeks later, Korea JoongAng Daily reported that a Samsung executive had confirmed that the Galaxy S23 Unpacked event would take place in the US in February, but didn’t provide a date. Based on several previous rumors, the Galaxy S23 won’t be a major departure from the previous generation. Leaked renders have revealed that the design will be similar to that of the Galaxy S22, but every model will seemingly adopt the look of the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s rear panel. In other words, Samsung will dump the camera island and embed the rear cameras directly into the panel. It’s a cleaner look, but it might not be for everyone. The rest of the Galaxy S23 should look virtually identical to its predecessor. There will once again be a single hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera near the top center of the display, the volume rocker and power button will be on the right side of the device, and there will be a speaker grille alongside the USB-C port at the bottom. As for the specifications, rumors have also suggested that Samsung will forego its Exynos processor next year and equip every Galaxy S23 model with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. In two months, Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy S23 series. While dummy units of the product have already leaked and some possible specifications, we now have a chance to take a closer look at some of the cases that will be available for the S23, S23 Plus, and S23 Ultra models. Before MobileFun gave us the first look, famous leaker Evan Blass posted on his Twitter account the name of some first-party S23 cases. The publication notes that this bronze-looking color was rumored for the iPhone 14 Pro at some point. The only thing Samsung can do to fight the iPhone 14 Pro right now is run ridiculous ads that mock Apple. And Samsung is lucky the recent lockdowns in China significantly impacted the production of Apple’s new iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models. Samsung’s best bet for competing against the iPhone 14 series isn’t the Galaxy S22 or the latest foldable phones. It’s the Galaxy S23 series coming early next year. But now, a leaker claims the Galaxy S23 release date hasn’t yet been decided because Samsung can’t figure out how to price the new flagships. Recent reports claimed that Samsung will unveil the Galaxy S23 at some point in early February. That’s a somewhat regular schedule for the Galaxy S series. The phone should then hit stores shortly after preorders begin. But we have no official dates from Samsung, and there’s no reason for the Korean vendor to hurry. Samsung is a couple of months away from the Galaxy S23’s series launch, a smartphone that Samsung fans should already be excited about. That’s because Samsung will use only Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon chip to power the phone after the Exynos performance disaster with Galaxy S22 series. A new report out of Korea says that Samsung is indeed looking to focus on quality instead of cost-cutting. The company wants to compete better against Apple’s iPhone, which means no more cost-saving measures. If the information is accurate, then Galaxy S enthusiasts have one more reason to be excited about the upcoming Galaxy S23 series. Earlier this year, Samsung critics said the Korean giant had cut costs to improve profitability. This directly hurt the Galaxy S22’s performance, leading to a massive scandal. Samsung defended against such speculation, saying it hasn’t been cutting costs for the S22 flagships. But the company did ditch the Exynos chips from its Galaxy S line, announcing that it plans to build a new application processor for high-end phones. Korean media outlet Hankyung reported on Samsung’s shift in strategy. The Korean handset maker wants to avoid profitability-oriented development and cost-reduction strategies next year. That’s where Apple has been making its money with the iPhone for years. The strategy change will also help Samsung regain consumer trust. The report doesn’t mention the Galaxy S23, Z Fold 5, and Z Flip 5 phones by name. But these are the flagships that Samsung should launch next year. The new strategy should apply to these devices. The story indicates that Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Han Jong-hee ordered the DX (Device Experience) division management that “all departments should think about ways to strengthen the competitiveness of smartphones without getting caught up in cost reduction.” It’s unclear what that means for the upcoming 2023 flagship phones. Not to mention that the policy might impact Samsung’s mid-range phones. The Galaxy A handsets are selling better than Samsung’s flagships, but that’s because they’re more affordable. The report notes that Apple is Samsung’s main adversary in the premium market. A Counterpoint Research report showed that Apple has a 57% share of the global premium phone market. That’s devices that cost more than $400. Comparatively, Samsung’s share stood at 19%. Hankyung adds that analysts expect Apple to overtake Samsung in the fourth quarter when it comes to overall smartphone share (24.6% vs. 20.2%). Samsung is the king of the foldable market right now because it was one of the first companies to launch phones that fold. Another reason for that dominance is the absence of real competitors. Several Chinese foldable handsets could compete against the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4, but they’re unavailable internationally. The main reason Samsung can brag about being the market leader in this segment is the absence of a foldable iPhone. A few weeks ago, Samsung launched a new ad campaign to mock Apple for not having a foldable iPhone. After all these years, Samsung has not given up on making fun of the iPhone. That’s even though Apple sells millions of expensive iPhones every year, a feat Samsung can’t match with its foldable and non-foldable Galaxy flagships. The new Samsung ad is part of the On the Fence campaign that Samsung started in early November. Like the previous spot, we have the same iPhone user, sitting on the fence between Apple and Samsung, unsure of what to do next. The man starts a conversation with a woman who tells him she used to be him. “Sitting on the fence between Apple and Samsung.” The man is interested in a Samsung device but worries about what his friends will think if he gets it. But the woman explains that everyone around him will be jealous. “When you pull out your new Galaxy Z Flip 4, people are going to lose it,” she says. “They’ll never leave you alone.” The idea here is clear, Samsung has a type of handset that Apple doesn’t make. There’s no foldable iPhone to compete against the Galaxy Z Flip 4. But it’s not like people are hurrying to buy foldable Galaxy phones. The Flip 4 is reasonably priced, matching the cost of traditional flagship phones. Yet it can’t match the popularity of non-foldable iPhones, like the iPhone 14 Pro models. That must hurt Samsung terribly in real life. In the ad, however, Samsung wins the customer over. He’s no longer on the fence, jumping over to Samsung to embrace the foldable handset. As soon as he does, iPhone users from the other side start pestering him with questions. There’s no telling when Apple will make a foldable iPhone if it’s even considering it. Instead, the company might launch foldable tablets or MacBooks before a foldable iPhone. As for Samsung, the lack of real competition is hurting its foldables rather than helping it gain more customers. Need to make a repair on your Samsung phone? The company might soon have an app for that. As reported by SamMobile, Samsung has made a trademark filing for a new app that has sparked rumors the company could take on repair companies like iFixit for its own devices. The trademark filing, among other things, makes mentioned of a new “Self Repair Assistant” app. The trademark filing describes “Self Repair Assistant” as a “computer application software for mobile phones for self-installation and self-maintenance of smartwatches, tablets, mobile phones, and earbuds.” It’s supposed to provide “consultancy and information services relating to self-installation and self-repair” of various mobile device types. If the company releases such an app, it could help the company expand its self-repair program which, despite being launched over the summer of 2022, has also added a few devices to the program to enable consumers to repair certain aspects of their devices. At launch, the Samsung Self-Repair program covered only a handful of devices, including the Galaxy S20 series, the Galaxy S21 trio, and the Galaxy Tab S7+. And not much has changed since. These remain the only devices covered by the program. Samsung is the second major phone company to launch a self-repair program to bring such concepts in-house. Apple has already launched its own self-repair program and continues to add devices that customers can purchase parts and tools for in order to make their own repairs as opposed to taking it to an Apple Store or third-party retailer. If it does launch such an app, it could enable the company to support more devices for self-repair more quickly. It also poses a threat to third-party repair companies like iFixit, whose business is based on helping customers repair their devices themselves. After the Galaxy S22 series blunders, Samsung assuredly can’t wait to release a traditional smartphone that consumers can actually get excited about. Add to that the incredible iPhone 14 Pro sales and Apple’s manufacturing issues in China, and Samsung has plenty of reasons to launch the Galaxy S23 series as quickly as possible next year. A report from Korea says the launch event will take place in the US in early February. But we don’t have an actual date for the event yet. We’ve always expected the Galaxy S23 series to hit stores in the first quarter of 2023 after a two-week preorder period. That’s been Samsung’s strategy in recent years. But this is the first time that a more specific launch window has leaked this early. According to Korean media, an unnamed Samsung executive confirmed the launch period. “The S23 series will be shown during our own Unpacked event in the United States, which will be held in February,” the person said. They didn’t mention a date or city, but local media said the Galaxy S23 launch event would take place in San Francisco in the first week of the month. February 1st falls on a Wednesday next year. MWC was once the home of the Galaxy S launch event. But in recent years, Samsung moved away from the big Spanish mobile show. The report notes that the Galaxy S23 series might be more expensive. But the good news is that Qualcomm’s brand new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will power all Galaxy S23 models. This should prevent any performance issues similar to the Galaxy S22 series. Samsung has been trying to beat the iPhone for years. And it has failed for years. Apple still makes the most coveted flagship phones in town, and Samsung is still a fast follower in the business. Even now, in 2022, Samsung continues to copy Apple’s new iPhone features all the time. The iPhone 14 Pro’s success is another pain point, and it must hurt Samsung even more considering the Galaxy S22 series’ blunders. Samsung might criticize and mock the newest iPhones publicly, but it probably loves the success of Apple’s new iPhone series. That’s because Samsung happens to be a massive supplier of a critical component that Apple uses to manufacture iPhones: OLED screens. And the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max got even more sophisticated OLED panels this year. The big winner? Samsung Display. Even before Apple’s early September iPhone 14 launch event, reports claimed that Samsung would be the main supplier of Apple’s OLED panels. LG and BOE would also supply displays for certain iPhone models, although Samsung would get the largest share. A new report from The Elec claims that Samsung will supply over 70% of the OLED panels Apple needs for the iPhone 14 series. Apple is expected to need about 120 million OLED screens for the iPhone 14 series, and Samsung will reportedly account for more than 80 million units. LG Display will supposedly make 20+ million units, while BOE will ship 6 million screens to Apple. The low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistor (TFT) OLED equips the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max feature low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) TFT OLED panels. These are the displays that support 120Hz dynamic refresh rates. The refresh drops as low as 1Hz, enabling the always-on display functionality exclusive to the Pro models. Samsung supplies OLED panels for all four iPhone 14 models. But some 60 million Samsung OLED panels will serve the iPhone 14 Pro versions. These should be the most expensive OLED panels that Apple utilizes this year. A report from Nikkei said recently that the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s cost of parts rose to $501 this year, a $60 increase over the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The A16 Bionic chip is an expensive component, according to the report. But 24.8% of that cost goes to South Korean suppliers. Samsung and LG are two of them. It’s unclear how many other South Korean suppliers make parts for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. But the OLED display is one of the iPhone’s most expensive parts no matter what company makes it. Per The Elec, LG makes OLED panels for the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 and the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max. BOE only scored contracts for the 6.1-inch iPhone 14. This indicates neither company is ready to challenge Samsung in the short term. At the end of the day, the iPhone 14 series will add billions of dollars to Samsung’s earnings. That’s a great perk to have from a smartphone that outsells Samsung’s own flagship Galaxy smartphones by an order of magnitude. Of note, Samsung will probably continue to benefit greatly from iPhone sales in the future unless LG and BOE can significantly up their game. The Galaxy S23 series that Samsung will launch in the first quarter of next year should feature satellite communications support, just like Apple’s iPhone 14 and Huawei’s Mate 50 series. While a report says that Samsung has been developing the feature for a couple of years, Samsung is still following Apple’s lead in the industry. But if there was one feature every Android vendor should copy, it’s support for satellite communications for emergencies. In September, Apple announced support for satellite communications for the entire iPhone 14 lineup, but the feature just rolled out a few days ago. iPhone 14 owners can test the feature to see how Emergency SOS over satellite works. Unlike Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity, the iPhone 14’s satellite connectivity will only work in case of emergency. According to ET News, Samsung is working with satellite communication company Iridium, which has 66 low-orbit satellites around the planet. The plan is to provide voice and data communication services. Samsung has been developing the feature for a couple of years, looking to overcome the difficulties associated with satellite communications. The company reportedly wants to transmit text messages and low-resolution images over satellite. This would be an upgrade over what the iPhone 14 can do. The biggest challenge is miniaturizing a satellite antenna to fit inside a smartphone like the Galaxy S23. Voice and high-speed data communication over satellite require large antennas. Adding satellite support to a phone for emergency services would be a welcome first step toward bringing more sophisticated satellite communication to smartphones. The report says that Samsung should release its satellite communication products in the near future due to pressure from Apple and Huawei. Therefore, flagship phones like the Galaxy S23 series should be the first to support the technology. Still, it’s too early for Samsung to talk about these initiatives. The iPhone’s A-series System-on-Chip (SoC) is the mobile processor that sets the tone in the mobile industry. We’ve been waiting for years for rivals to come up with a decent alternative, and we might finally have one. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 that will power 2023 Android phones like the Galaxy S23 series might deliver a great challenge to the A16 Bionic inside the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. Qualcomm’s newest flagship processor will power every Samsung Galaxy S23 variant. Moreover, the silicon Samsung is getting might be exclusive to the S23 series. Whatever the case, the base Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip already looks impressive. The first Geekbench 5 benchmarks indicate that the processor can almost match Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro. Geekbench 5 is a popular benchmark tool that provides scores for single-core and multi-core CPU performance. The benchmark tool also covers GPU performance. We’ve been looking at these scores for years, and brand-new SoCs appear on the benchmark site long before the launch of commercial products. The iPhone 14 Pro Max scored 1884 (single-core) and 5431 in a recent test. That might be a modest but notable performance bump over the A15 Bionic in the iPhone 13 and affordable iPhone 14. But it’s still well above what other 2022 flagship smartphones can offer. For example, the Pixel 7 Pro is no match for the iPhone 14 Plus. The Galaxy S23 launch might be several months away, but we’ll see other Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered phones before then. The Vivo X90 Pro+ is one such device. Well-known Samsung insider Ice Universe posted Geekbench scores for the handset, revealing the new SoC can reach 1462 in single-core tests and 5182 in multi-core tests. Qualcomm confirmed the Galaxy S23 series would run on its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor even before launching the new System-on-Chip (SoC). The processor is now official, as Qualcomm unveiled the next-gen flagship SoC that will power future Android devices this week. While we’ll have to wait until next year for the Galaxy S23, an exciting rumor is already swirling. An insider claims that not only will every Galaxy S23 model have the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, but Samsung might receive an exclusive version of the chip for the S23. Well-known Samsung leaker Ice Universe said on Twitter that the Galaxy S23 series might have a different Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip than flagships from other Android vendors. The move wouldn’t necessarily be surprising. After all, Qualcomm and Samsung inked a massive chip deal a few months ago after the Galaxy S22 chip disappointment. Samsung’s Exynos 2200 turned out to be a colossal failure that forced Samsung to change its chip strategy. But Ice Universe looked at early benchmark results for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Today, Philips announced its new Hue Festavia string lights. Just in time for the holiday season, the company is making users’ lighting experiences more personalized, colorful, and intelligent. Here’s what you need to know. Philips promises “a cozy ambiance inside for the holidays and special occasions” with the new Hue Festavia string lights. It features 250 mini smart LEDs along a 20-meter cord. The company says customers can decore their Christmas tree, staircase, or any area in their home. With the Festavia string lights, users can dim and brighten the lights, change the color, turn lights on and off, set timers and schedules, and more. Like other Philips Hue products, this one also works in harmony with other company lights in the space and can be synced with music using Spotify and Samsung SmartThings integration, allowing the lights to flash, dim, and brighten along people’s favorite songs or playlists. Alongside the Philips Hue Festavia string lights, the Hue app has been updated with more features. With a new Sparkle effect, users can twinkle lights on the string. Software updates usually ship with a bug or two, but it’s not often that they permanently kill your device. Unfortunately, that appears to be precisely what is happening to Galaxy Watch 4 owners after installing Samsung’s latest firmware for the smartwatch. SamMobile reports that new firmware update R8xxXXU1GVI3 is bricking Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic devices. A number of Galaxy Watch 4 users claim that once they apply R8xxXXU1GVI3 and turn the watch off, it won’t turn back on. If you let the smartwatch die or accidentally power it off after updating, it might be dead for good. It’s unclear just how widespread the issue was, but users from all over the world have been complaining about bricked smartwatches on social media. The good news is that Samsung halted the rollout and plans to release another update soon. One user shared a screenshot of a notice from Samsung over on the company’s community forums, and we’ve copied the text of that notice here: We are aware that a limited number of Galaxy Watch4 series models are not turning on following a recent software (VI3) update. We have halted the update and will release a new software shortly. We recommend consumers experiencing this issue with their Galaxy Watch4 series to visit their nearest Samsung service center or call a contact center. Presumably, anyone who didn’t download the update is safe now. On the other hand, if you did install R8xxXXU1GVI3 on your Galaxy Watch 4, the only way to fix it may be to bring it into a Samsung service center. Samsung’s notice does seem to imply that just installing the next update won’t be enough to save the watch. If and when we learn more about what happened, we’ll be sure to provide an update. In the meantime, keep an eye on Samsung’s social channels if you own a Galaxy Watch 4 or Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. A new update should begin rolling out soon. Samsung is expected to release three Galaxy S23 variants early next year, all of which have already leaked. These are the successors to the Galaxy S22, S22 Plus, and S22 Ultra. Therefore, two Galaxy S23 models should be traditional phones, while the Ultra will come with an S Pen stylus. But perhaps the most exciting Galaxy S23 feature is something else, given the Galaxy S22’s early performance mishaps. All Galaxy S23 models will feature Qualcomm’s next-gen high-end System-on-Chip (SoC). That’s probably going to be the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip that will power several 2023 Android flagships. The processor will surely power all Galaxy S23 devices, no matter what Qualcomm calls it. It’s not just a rumor either, as Qualcomm confirmed as much. Samsung promised fans to improve its flagship Exynos SoCs last year, but the Exynos 2200 was hardly a chip that could compete against the iPhone’s A15 Bionic or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. We had those fears even before the Galaxy S22’s arrival when Samsung delayed the Exynos 2200, prompting speculation that it might cancel the chip altogether. That’s why it’s good news to hear that Qualcomm will provide chips for all Galaxy S23 models. As a reminder, the early real-life Galaxy S22 experiences showed that Samsung throttled the handset’s performance, especially in Korea. The country got the Exynos 2200 variant of the chip. And that was the chip that had to be slowed to avoid overheating. In an even more embarrassing twist, testers discovered that Samsung was cheating on benchmark tests. Samsung apologized and promised to create a new high-end chip for its mobile devices. But that’s not going to be the Exynos 2300. That’s also where Qualcomm indicated that it will provide 100% of the chips Samsung needs for the Galaxy S23 series. Here’s what Qualcomm’s Akash Palkhiwala had to say: So from a March quarter perspective, you’re right, the benefit from the Samsung launch for the new phone would be in the in kind of the second half of the March quarter. So it comes in towards the end of the quarter, but that will be an advantage, whereas our share from 75% in G S22 goes up to global share in G S23. As GSM Arena points out, all three Galaxy S23 models have passed through Geekbench, showing the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. Samsung has a new anti-Apple ad called “On the Fence” that focuses on foldable smartphones, iPhone included. But it doesn’t promote the qualities of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 or Flip 4, phones that Samsung launched only a few months ago. Nor does it mention the great price of the latter or any types of deals for consumers. The ad is all about Apple not having a foldable iPhone. It’s about bashing Apple rather than promoting its own devices. That’s at a time when the iPhone 14 Pro models have been selling incredibly well. It must mean that people aren’t exactly flocking to buy Samsung’s foldables. That would not be surprising in this economy, as everyone in the mobile industry but Apple seems to be struggling. Samsung released an anti-iPhone 14 ad in early September, just days before Apple’s big iPhone 14 launch event. Samsung criticized the unreleased iPhone, claiming its Galaxy products have better cameras than the upcoming device. As we explained, Samsung’s Galaxy S22 is hardly the flagship series that Samsung wanted it to be. The handset disappointed fans from the first day thanks to Samsung’s decision to cripple its performance. That was just one thing that held the Galaxy S22 back. You didn’t see any of that in Samsung’s anti-iPhone 14 ad. The new ad is all the more incredible as it criticizes Apple for not having a foldable iPhone. In fairness, Samsung certainly needs that sort of competition. We already explained that Samsung needs a foldable iPhone to deliver better foldables of its own. At the same time, it’s reasonable to expect the foldable iPhone to crush the foldable Galaxy devices. The ad shows a person sitting on the fence between an Apple store and a Samsung store. That’s somewhat disingenuous as Samsung hardly has a store presence comparable to Apple’s. Still, the “on the fence” consumer tells the Apple employee that “on the Samsung side, they have folding phones and epic cameras.” The Apple employee responds, “we’re waiting for all that to come over here,” to the customer’s dismay. “Because that’s what we do. We wait,” the Apple employee continues. Samsung probably dreads the day when the foldable iPhone arrives. But also hopes it’ll happen, as Samsung might sell Apple parts for such an iPhone. Rumors say that Apple is working on foldable devices, although it might not be an iPhone that gets such treatment first. In addition to a number of announcements at the event, the company also revealed that Samsung, one of its partners, is working on a massive 8K monitor. Not only is the company planning to release this massive 8K monitor, but it is also planned to be curved, taking things to an even more insane level. Unfortunately, the only detail that AMD revealed about the monitor is that it will feature DisplayPort 2.1 connectivity. The company says that Samsung will be revealing more details about the massive monitor at CES 2023 which is kicking off at the beginning of January in 2023. The outlet notes that, due to how the aspect ratios of ultrawide monitors work out, we shouldn’t expect a true 8K resolution from the upcoming monitor. Doing some basic math, the new monitor could come in at a resolution of 8,000 pixels by 2,250 pixels. While the 32:9 aspect ratio of these monitors suggests the screen won’t be a true 8K resolution — for comparison, the “5K” Odyssey G9 has a height of just 1440 pixels to go with its incredible 5,120 pixels of width — it would likely be a substantial improvement in vertical real estate. Today’s true 4K, 16:9 displays have a vertical resolution of 2,160 pixels, but a 32:9 “8K” monitor should do better. At 8,000 pixels wide and 32:9, we should see a height of 2,250 pixels, so you should get 4K quality or better in that dimension. One of the biggest questions is what the new monitor may cost. The Neo G9, which was Samsung’s more recent high-end ultrawide, debuted at $2500. It’s not hard to think that this 8K version might crack the $3000 price point. Rumors about Apple launching a foldable device aren’t new. This time, Samsung is preparing for the Cupertino company to join a market that the South Korean firm currently has the lead. While everyone expects a foldable iPhone, Samsung doesn’t think this will be the first Apple device to bend. According to a report by The Elec, Samsung thinks the foldable market will grow 80% by 2025, and one of the reasons will be Apple joining the competition in 2024. Samsung’s mobile business, Mobile Experience, said that the Cupertino company would enter the foldable market, not with smartphones, but with notebooks and tablets first. Samsung also shared that in the South Korean market, iPhone users in their 20s and 30s were changing their devices to Samsung’s foldable phones at a rate three to four times higher than before. Image source: Samsung Last month, CCS Insight published its annual prediction report and said Apple would likely launch a foldable iPad in 2024. “Right now, it doesn’t make sense for Apple to make a foldable iPhone. We think they will shun that trend and probably dip a toe in the water with a foldable iPad,” Been Wood, chief of research at CCS Insight, told CNBC in an interview. One of the reasons why Apple won’t likely launch a foldable iPhone at first is not to cannibalize the existing iPhones as, according to the analyst, the foldable option would have to be “incredibly expensive.” Early this year, display analyst Ross Young said Apple was mulling a 20-inch foldable MacBook display, which could also be an iPad. Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman also corroborated Apple entering this new market. “The company could go with a foldable 20-inch screen attached to a physical keyboard or just have one side of the display serving as a virtual keyboard. I’m told Apple has indeed been exploring a dual-screen, foldable MacBook/iPad hybrid that would take the second approach. It would trade in the physical keyboard an trackpad for a fully touch-screen base.” Both analysts Ming-Chi Kuo and Ross Young expect a foldable iPhone to be introduced in 2025 at the earliest. While the global smartphone market recorded its third consecutive decline this year, Apple remains the only company to register positive growth. This time, the new iPhone 14 lineup, in addition to the previous models, helped Apple to be the only vendor in the top five to record this positive growth. According to Canalys, Q3 2022 registered a drop of 9% in a year-on-year comparison, marking the worst Q3 since 2014. The gloomy economic outlook has led consumers to delay purchasing electronic hardware and prioritize other essential spending. This will likely continue to dampen the smartphone market for the next six to nine months. Samsung still maintains the leading position with a 22% market share. Vendors had significant stockpiles going into July, but sell-through gradually improved from September owing to aggressive discounting and promotions. The pricing strategy of new products is cautiously crafted, even for Apple, to avoid significant pushback from consumers who now tend to be very sensitive to any price hike,” added Liu. While iPhone 14 Pro models are surely helping Apple to maintain its position, several reports show the company is struggling with the base models iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. A new DigiTimes story (via MacRumors) shows that “several supply chain makers” received a notification from Apple to cut iPhone 14 Plus production by around 40%. Not only that, but DigiTimes’ sources show that Apple will revise downward the total shipments of iPhone 14 Plus to around 10 million units for 2022. At least, it seems the company is moving its production efforts to the iPhone 14 Pro models. October might seem early for next-gen Galaxy S leaks, but that isn’t stopping them. Samsung can’t keep any secrets, and with the Galaxy S23 launch event likely coming between January and March next year, it’s officially leak season. Moreover, the Galaxy S22 hasn’t been the hit Samsung needed, and now the iPhone 14 and Pixel 7 are available. With that in mind, seeing more Galaxy S23 design leaks is not surprising. The Galaxy S23 design leaks started popping up online a few weeks ago. It happened soon after three of the four iPhone 14 models hit stores. Those leaks indicated that the Galaxy S23 would look similar to its predecessor. But they also implied that Samsung would bring the Galaxy 22 Ultra rear camera design to all three Galaxy S23 variants. Rather than a camera island holding the triple-lens cameras on the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus, Samsung will go for independent protrusions for each camera. That’s what the company did with the Galaxy S22 Ultra last year. Like any smartphone leaks, the renders we saw in late September can’t be confirmed. We have to wait for Samsung to announce the Galaxy S23 series. But the closer we get to that announcement, the more leaks we’ll see, which will either corroborate or deny the early ones. Again, each lens has its protrusion rather than being part of a continuous metal frame. We always expected this design from the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Samsung applying the same design to the Galaxy S23 and the Plus indicates that Samsung might be going for a more uniform design language. The fact that case makers are already producing accessories for the Galaxy S23 handsets further suggests there’s some validity in these rumors. However, the cases do not contain actual Galaxy S23 variants. Instead, they have paper phones in them. There’s still one thing that Samsung can’t do to make the Ultra look more like the regular Galaxy S23 phones. The former will still have more rectangular corners than the smaller ones. That’s because the Galaxy S23 Ultra is a Note device. It features a built-in stylus, so the top and bottom sides of the phone have to be flat. YouTuber Mrwhosetheboss discovered recently that several Samsung Galaxy flagship smartphones have started swelling up, a sign that the battery was failing. Like the handset in the image above. As a content creator, he had amassed an extensive collection of smartphones, but only the Samsung handsets exhibited the problem. It looks like Samsung is already aware of the issue and monitoring it. It’s unclear how widespread it is or whether regular buyers routinely experience similar battery problems on devices that shouldn’t swell up. Other content creators with large phone collections also discovered that aging Samsung handsets might be more likely to swell up than devices from the competition. According to Mrwhosetheboss, Samsung had inspected some of the Galaxy phones with blown-up batteries — the batteries did not explode; they just swelled, breaking the devices in the process. Since then, Samsung also confirmed to The Verge that it’s “aware of this matter.” The Korean company is looking into “further technical assessments,” according to Samsung spokesperson Chris Langlois’s comments to The Verge. “We encourage customers with questions regarding their Samsung device to contact their local Customer Service representative.” Believe it or not, the battery swelling is actually good news. You might not be able to use the phone, and you should absolutely not try to recharge it once you see it swelling. But the battery will not catch fire or explode. Swelling is a safety feature that device makers build into batteries to prevent accidental fires. “The swelling itself is not inherently dangerous,” Arthur Shi told The Verge. Shi is a senior technical writer at iFixit, the folks who teardown smartphones like Samsung Galaxy flagships on a regular basis. They assess the repairability of smartphones, with battery replacements being one popular fix that users require. Shi said that iFixit saw plenty of swollen batteries across lots of phones. But it would take a lot of work to determine why it keeps happening to Samsung phones. He also said that people should absolutely not charge phones with batteries that start swelling. If you do that, the electrolytes will break down even more. This could lead to the battery rupturing and causing “thermal events.” Since Samsung’s big Galaxy Note 7 recall a few years ago, the company vowed to take battery safety even more seriously. The interoperable smart home project Matter is finally available as the Connectivity Standards Alliance and its members release a finalized first iteration of the standard and certification program. With that, it will be easier to integrate home appliances in a single solution, whether it’s controlled by Apple’s Siri, Google’s Assistant, Amazon’s Alexa, or Samsung. According to the press release, “member companies who make up all facets of the IoT now have a complete program for bringing the next generation of interoperable products that work across brands and platforms to market with greater privacy, security, and simplicity for consumers.” “What started as a mission to unravel the complexities of connectivity has resulted in Matter, a single, global IP-based protocol that will fundamentally change the IoT,” said Tobin Richardson, President and CEO of the Connectivity Standards Alliance. “This release is the first step on a journey our community and the industry are taking to make the IoT more simple, secure, and valuable no matter who you are or where you live. With global support from companies large and small, today’s Matter 1.0 release is more than a milestone for our organization and our members; it is a celebration of what is possible. Over 280 member companies, which include Amazon, Apple, Comcast, Google, and Samsung’s SmartThings, have worked on bringing their technologies, experiences, and innovations into a single standard called Matter. Remember the Galaxy Note 7 recalls from 2016? That was Samsung’s biggest smartphone disaster to date, putting a massive dent in its reputation. The company, however, took its time to investigate the battery mess and reassure customers that future Galaxy phones would not explode and catch fire as the Note 7 did. But fast forward to 2022, another messy Galaxy year for Samsung, and it looks like the Korean company might soon have to deal with a battery swelling problem. The new issue doesn’t resemble the Galaxy Note 7 fires and explosions. But the risk of accidents remains. It appears that some batteries in older Samsung phones are swelling up, which leads to damage to the handset. In turn, this type of accident can cause accidental fires and explosions. That said, there’s no recall this time. There also haven’t been any accidents reported involving fires or explosions. Also, Samsung has yet to address the findings of the YouTubers who discovered the issue. YouTuber Mrwhosetheboss has an extensive collection of Samsung flagship phones that he hasn’t used in recent years. He’s been collecting every high-end Galaxy device since 2010 and storing them in seemingly safe conditions together with other phones. Upon contacting Samsung, the Korean giant insisted on receiving the phones for inspection. And then Samsung never explained what happened. That was about two months ago. Why are Samsung Galaxy batteries swelling up? Mrwhosetheboss returned to his smartphone collection when he found similar reports on social media of Samsung Galaxy batteries swelling up. At that point, the YouTuber discovered that more phones from his collection had blown up. They did not explode, but the swelling battery had caused damage. The Galaxy S8, Galaxy 10e, and Galaxy S10 5G were all impacted. Worse, even a relatively new phone like the 2020 Galaxy Z Fold 2 showed the same battery swelling problem. They, too, agreed that the battery swelling issues seem to appear exclusively on Samsung phones. The latter even found a possible explanation for the problem. The electrolyte in the battery might decompose and release gas. In turn, this makes the battery swell up or blow up. Mrwhosetheboss also found that a newer phone started swelling up the Galaxy S20 FE flagship. Even though the battery should be in good condition for at least five years. Only Samsung knows why these batteries blow up This isn’t an official finding from Samsung, however. And it’s unclear how many people in the real world have experienced similar issues. Not to mention that most people tend to use their Samsung phones regularly. Whereas collectors primarily store these devices unpowered. Still, it’s worth pointing out that mostly Samsung batteries got swollen. Also, when a Galaxy phone user with just one phone would experience the problem, they’d think there’s an issue with their device specifically, rather than a more widespread phenomenon.
