  1. Samsung is so terrified of the iPhone 14 that it launched an ad campaign to mock Apple (again) right before the launch event. Samsung keeps pulling the same stunt only to copy Apple’s biggest decisions later. To that point, in a recent One UI 5 beta, Samsung basically cloned one of the best new iOS 16 features: Lock Screen customization. The new Lock Screen experience in iOS 16 is something smartphone users who love customizing their handsets have been excited about. The Lock Screen is more exciting than ever, allowing you to add all sorts of widgets and visual effects. You can also change fonts and colors to match the static or dynamic images that act as the Lock Screen wallpaper. Moreover, you can set up different wallpapers for each Focus mode. And each one of them can have its own widgets that are relevant in the context of that mode. iOS 16 Lock Screen customizations. Image source: Apple Inc. Finally, if you have an iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max, you can pair the new Lock Screen with Apple’s always-on display feature for even greater utility. Apple wasn’t the first to do this, and Android fans point out that they had access to Lock Screen widgets long before iOS 16 rolled out. But Apple built its own Lock Screen customization, giving users plenty of customization options to suit their needs. How Samsung cloned iOS 16’s Lock Screen feature In turn, Samsung could have come up with an original Lock Screen customization experience for its own smartphone users. Instead, Samsung just copied Apple. Maybe there’s no other way to make a Lock Screen with widgets now that Apple released iOS 16. Perhaps Samsung had no choice but to arrange user interface elements in One UI 5 just like Apple did in iOS 16. The same goes for the available customizations. Just like there probably wasn’t any other way to make the first Galaxy phones than to copy the iPhone pixel by pixel. And the wallpaper picker’s choices aren’t all that similar either. Moreover, Apple supports more third-party widgets than Samsung. Samsung only supports notifications icons for the time being. But One UI 5 is still in beta. GoodLock vs Samsung OneUI 5 vs iOS 16 Show me exactly where GoOdlock Did It First Where’s the Lockscreen Wallpaper Filter Option? Then again, iOS 16 beta 1 came out in mid-June. Samsung had plenty of time to study it. The Dynamic Island didn’t see the light of day until Apple’s iPhone 14 reveal earlier this month. We’ll likely see how Samsung responds to that feature soon. More Apple coverage: Check out the best Apple deals online right now. 2. With the launch of Apple’s iPhone 14 behind us, the next major flagship smartphone will be Samsung’s Galaxy S23 in 2023. We have already seen some leaks, but on Tuesday, we might have gotten our first look at the redesign Samsung has in store for the Galaxy S23 Plus. The differences are subtle, but they should be noticeable to Samsung fans. This week, Steve Hemmerstoffer (@OnLeaks) and the mobile tech site Smartprix teamed up to share the first renders of the Galaxy S23 Plus. Galaxy S23 Plus renders reveal redesign. Image source: @OnLeaks/Smartprix The most obvious design change comes on the rear panel. As noted by Smartprix, Samsung seems to have abandoned the so-called “camera island” which appeared on the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus. In its place are three standalone cameras sticking straight out of the rear panel. Last year, this look was exclusive to the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The Galaxy S23 Plus will reportedly be larger than its predecessor. It should once again have a 6.6-inch display, but it will measure 157.7 x 76.1 x 7.6mm. Last year’s Galaxy S22 Plus came in at 157.4 x 75.8 x 7.6mm, so expect an ever-so-slightly taller phone this year. If you want to see a 3D render of the Galaxy S23 Plus, watch the video below: Moving to the front, the Galaxy S23 Plus will look virtually identical to the S22 Plus. There will once again be a single hole-punch cutout for a selfie camera at the top center of the screen, the volume rocker and power button will be on the right side of the device, and we’ll find a speaker grille alongside the USB-C port at the bottom. Providing Samsung sticks to a similar schedule next year, the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus, and Galaxy S23 Ultra should launch in February 2023. 3. Apple will launch the iPhone 14 in just a few days. And all estimates say the new series will see incredible demand after launch. iPhone 14 sales might outperform the iPhone 13, which already sold amazingly well, defying the economy. Furthermore, the iPhone 14 should sell very well in China. All of this must give Samsung nightmares, as the company has just mocked the iPhone 14 in a brand new ad. Rather than promote its newest Galaxy phones on their own merits, Samsung felt it had to troll the iPhone 14 with less than a week to go until the phone’s launch. It’s a habit that Samsung is yet to correct, even though some of these trolling ads might hurt the Korean giant. Here’s how Samsung words its ad above: Buckle up for Apple’s latest launch as you enter a world where heads will turn, just not in your direction. Where the highest resolution camera on a smartphone will be in someone’s pocket. And that epic moonshot that’s getting all the likes won’t be yours. Because this innovation is not coming soon to an iPhone near you. It’s already here in the Galaxy. Samsung’s fear is the best possible promotion for the iPhone 14 too. If you’re still on the fence about this upgrade, then Samsung trolling Apple is the kind of sign you might have needed. As a reminder, the iPhone 14 trolling campaign comes from a company that copied the iPhone pixel by pixel in its early days. Even today, Samsung still follows Apple’s every move after mocking the iPhone maker. And that’s why some of its anti-Apple ads then hurt Samsung. Speaking of innovations, let’s also remember Samsung is the only big smartphone maker that had to recall a flagship phone after its innovations caught on fire. Twice. Similarly, Samsung shipped a poorly designed Galaxy Fold a few years ago. It then had to postpone the launch by months. It redesigned the handset so it wouldn’t break as easily. Then there’s this year’s Galaxy S22 performance scandal. Even if you don’t want to buy the iPhone 14, you should avoid the Galaxy S22 at all costs. Samsung’s innovations turned the Galaxy S22 into an overheating mess early this year. And then there were additional misleading claims about the handset’s capabilities that should keep you away from it. With all that in mind, Samsung better buckle up. The massive iPhone 14 sales that will follow in the coming year will obliterate all the 2022 and 2023 flagship Galaxies. More Apple coverage: Check out the best Apple deals online right now. 4. Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip foldable smartphones a couple of weeks ago and offered buyers various preorder deals right after the launch event. Moreover, the Korean giant also unveiled new wearable devices, including the Galaxy Watch Series 5 smartwatches that also come in a larger Pro model and the brand new Galaxy Buds 2 Pro earphones. The new foldables are the most exciting new Android phones right now, and also the most expensive ones. That’s why Samsung started throwing deals at customers even before the launch event. Customers who registered for preorders could stack discounts of up to $200 on top of all the deals that Samsung offered during the preorder period. If you’ve somehow missed that, you should know that you can still score significant savings on the Galaxy Fold 4 and Flip 4 now that the handsets are available in stores. Galaxy Fold 4 smartphone – color options. Image source: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 release date deals Foldable phones are still not perfect and are not mainstream devices, either. But Samsung has been at the forefront of the foldable industry, delivering significant advances in the past few years. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are no different, bringing various improvements to tried and tested designs. With all that in mind, it’s no surprise that Samsung’s foldable phones are still expensive. The lack of any real competition in the foldable space, combined with the current state of the economy, certainly didn’t help Samsung reduce the prices of last year’s models. But the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 aren’t more expensive than their predecessors, at least. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 starts at $1,799, while the cheapest Galaxy Z Flip 4 costs $999. These are the regular prices before any deals and discounts are applied. However, Samsung will continue to offer plenty of deals on foldable devices even after the preorder period. You’ll find Samsung’s release deals for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 below. Additionally, we’ve also listed the Galaxy Watch 5, Watch 5 Pro, and Galaxy Buds 2 Pro deals that are available this week. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: $150 Samsung Credit + up to $900 Enhanced Trade-In. $300 Guaranteed Trade-In credit on any condition Galaxy devices Dates: 8/26-9/11 Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4: $50 Samsung Credit + up to $700 Enhanced Trade-In. $200 Guaranteed Trade-In credit on any condition Galaxy devices Dates: 8/26-9/11 Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 & Watch 5 Pro: $75 Samsung Credit Dates: 8/26 – 9/4 Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro: $50 Samsung Credit Dates: 8/25 – 9/4 Should you buy the new Samsung foldables? As you can see above, the new Galaxy Fold 4 and Flip 4 deals have expiration dates. You’ll want to check them out and ensure you qualify, especially for the enhanced trade-in deals. If you’re wondering whether the phones are worth buying, you should know there’s no real alternative in town. But the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 are Samsung foldables that are easy to recommend compared to past generations. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 might look like their predecessors, but Samsung made a few key changes that fans of foldable devices will appreciate. That’s especially true for the Fold 4, which is lighter and thinner than before, yet still just as durable. It’s all thanks to a new hinge mechanism and display design changes that helped Samsung reduce the phone’s weight. Galaxy Flip 4 color options. Image source: Samsung Moreover, the aspect ratio has been improved, so using the phone in folded mode is easier than with earlier models. As for the Flip 4, the handset looks almost identical to its predecessor. The one big improvement concerns the external display. It’s better in general, but especially for taking selfies with the primary camera system. As for the hardware, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 are typical 2022 Android flagships. They rock the latest Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 platform. The processor is faster and more efficient than the Galaxy S22 series’ chips. That said, it’s up to you to go for one of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 release date deals above. Samsung should offer additional discounts in the future once these offers expire, but there’s no guarantee they’ll be better. 5. Samsung’s big Unpacked press event of the summer is finally here, bringing fans a variety of new devices that will be available for preorder almost immediately after the show. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 foldable phones are the main attraction of the press conference. But Samsung also has new wearables to go along with its next-gen phones. We’re looking at the Galaxy Watch 5 series and the new Galaxy Buds 2 Pro wireless earphones. Preorder Samsung’s new Galaxy devices right here. The Fold 4 and Flip 4 represent Samsung’s newest foldable smartphones. They look almost identical to their predecessors, but Samsung has a few significant changes in place — especially for the Fold 4 model. Designs aside, the two phones feature mostly the same main hardware components. Qualcomm’s newest Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 platform powers the new Galaxy foldables, which should give them a significant performance bump over the Galaxy S22. And this System-on-Chip (SoC) should fix all the overheating and throttling issues from the previous generation. The Galaxy Watch 5 comes in two sizes, keeping in place the circular design Samsung employs for its Apple Watch alternatives. But Samsung also unveiled a Pro version of the Watch 5 that offers a larger screen and better battery life. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: Specs, price, and release date The Galaxy Fold 4 is slightly shorter than its predecessor, but it’s also wider. This means the foldable screen is still quite large but the phone is more comfortable in the hand. We’re looking at a 7.6-inch 120Hz panel with Ultra Thin Glass on top. The foldable has a redesigned hinge and should be slightly thinner than the Fold 3. It’s also 20g lighter than last year’s model. Thanks to the new aspect ratio, the external display should be easier to use. It’s a 6.2-inch OLED panel that supports up to a 120Hz refresh rate. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 smartphone. The triple-lens camera system on the back also got a significant update. We’re looking at a 50-megapixel primary sensor, 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, and 10-megapixel telephoto lens (3x zoom). 6. The future of Samsung’s foldable phones is finally here. On Wednesday, August 10th at 6:00 a.m. PT / 9:00 a.m. ET, Samsung will host its latest Galaxy Unpacked event to reveal the new Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, and more. Unsurprisingly, leaks have already spoiled nearly everything there is to know about the new phones, but perhaps Samsung will have some surprises in store. You can watch along live to find out below. Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2022 live stream For months, Samsung has been hyping up its next-generation foldable phones. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 should be the highlights of this Unpacked, as Samsung continues to iterate on the design while improving performance on both devices. According to leaks, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will feature a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display as well as a 6.2-inch cover display. Inside the device are the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor, 12GB of RAM, up to 1TB of storage, and a 4,400 mAh battery. The rear triple camera array will contain 50 MP, 12 MP ultrawide, and 10 MP telephoto lenses. Samsung should also announce the Galaxy Z Flip 4 at the August event. Leaks point to a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display and a 1.9-inch cover screen. Plus, the flip phone will have a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 CPU, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 3,700 mAh battery. On the back of the phone are a 12 MP wide angle lens and a 12 MP ultra-wide angle lens. The Z Flip 4 will also feature a 10 MP front-facing camera when you flip it open. Other announcements In addition to new phones, Samsung will also reveal a new wearable device this Wednesday. We expect to see the Galaxy Watch 5 at its August Galaxy Unpacked. Rumors suggest that it will come in two sizes: 40mm and 44mm. There will also be a slightly larger Galaxy Watch 5 Pro with a rotating bezel. Both models will support faster charging speeds. Finally, the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro headphones should debut at the event today. These next-gen premium earbuds from Samsung will feature active noise cancellation, three microphones IPX7 water resistance, Bluetooth 5.3 support, and more. 7. One of the most exciting Galaxy Z Fold 4 rumors to date concerns the foldable’s specs. More specifically, the phone’s System-on-Chip (SoC). The Fold 4 and Flip 4 will feature Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC rather than the regular 8 Gen 1 or the Exynos 2200. And the Fold 4 should deliver tremendous performance gains thanks to that. That’s good news for anyone worried about the chips that powered the Galaxy S22 series. Rumors about chip choices for Android flagships coming out in the second half of the year shouldn’t be that exciting. In most years, the Android flagships launching in the second half would feature the same SoC as the phones that were released in the previous six months. But the Galaxy S22 performance scandal hurt Samsung earlier this year, leading to speculations that Samsung would abandon the Exynos 2200 in favor of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon. Galaxy S22 throttling scandal In some years, Qualcomm releases improved variants of the SoCs that power Android flagships released in the first half of the year. 2022 is one such year, with Qualcomm delivering the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 to replace the regular 8 Gen 1 model. That was even better news for Samsung fans looking to buy the Fold 4 or Flip 4. And rumors said all 2022 foldables will feature the newest Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 variant. Even early benchmarks leaked, suggesting the new processor will be faster than the previous variant. Reports also claimed the new chip will not overheat as much. Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip. Image source: Qualcomm The Galaxy S22 throttling issue came from Samsung’s desire to prevent overheating and battery life issues on the handset. The software reduced the chip’s peak performance, except for benchmark apps, where Samsung was caught cheating. It’s the Exynos 2200 variant of the Galaxy S22 phones that suffered from throttling the most, not the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 model. Still, there’s another reason to cheer for the 8 Plus Gen 1. Qualcomm moved production from Samsung to TSMC for the new SoC. Galaxy Z Fold 4’s Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 performance leaked Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 next Wednesday. The phones will hit stores a few weeks later. Once that happens, users will be able to judge for themselves the performance of the new Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip. And we’ll see plenty of reports detailing the phones’ performance and throttling. But we have a new rumor to look at until then, which teases massive performance gains for the two handsets. ️Exclusive info Galaxy Z Fold4 performance improved with @Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 processor CPU 15% GPU 59% NPU 68% Battery can be charged in half an hour to 50% at a charging speed of 25w with 4400mAh Screen refresh rate 120Hz with 1000nits layer of protection Victus+ on Front&back pic.twitter.com/MItVuvA9Bp — Ahmed Qwaider (@AhmedQwaider888) August 3, 2022 The Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 CPU will be 15% faster when it comes to CPU performance, according to the tweet above. We assume the speed difference concerns last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 3. But the leaker doesn’t specify the other device/SoC in the comparison. Should the speed gains concern the Galaxy S22, then the Fold 4’s performance would be even more impressive. The leaker also says that the GPU will deliver a tremendous jump, rising by nearly 60%. The NPU would also be 68% faster than the reference model. Again, we’re assuming it’s the Fold 3. That’s the only way to present these performance gains. The leaker addressed other Galaxy Fold 4 features, not just the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 performance. The foldable phone will feature a 4,400 mAh battery that supports 25W charging. That’s enough for the phone to reach a 50% charge in half an hour. Finally, the Fold 4 will feature a 120Hz display with 1,000 nits brightness and Victus+ protection on the front and back. 8. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 aren’t the only new Galaxy gadgets coming from Samsung’s Unpacked event next week. The Korean giant will also unveil new wearables during the show, including the Galaxy Watch 5, Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, and the new Galaxy Buds Pro 2. These devices have appeared in various leaks, but the latest rumor is easily one of the most exciting. The Galaxy Watch 5 will come with fast charging support, allowing it to recharge the battery to nearly 50% in 30 minutes. That’s a great feature to have on devices with limited battery life. If fast charging on smartwatches sounds familiar, that’s because Apple did the same thing with the Apple Watch Series 7 last year. And it’s a great feature to have to maximize the time you use the Watch. How the Apple Watch Series 7 fast charging works The Apple Watch Series 7 can reach an 80% charge in just 45 minutes. Apple also announced that the new Watch needs only 8 minutes of battery charging for the wearable to track your sleep for 8 hours. Thus, the Series 7 solves a major issue with the Apple Watch. All models that Apple launched so far only deliver one-day battery life. You can stretch it to more than a day, depending on how much you use the Watch. But most people will have to recharge the wearable at night. And that’s a problem if you want the wearable to track your sleep. Apple Watch Series 7 battery charging speeds, as listed on Apple.com Image source: Apple Inc. That’s why support for fast charging is crucial on devices like the Apple Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch 5. It’s all the more important, the more sophisticated these gadgets get. However, for fast charging to work, wearable devices need USB-C chargers. That’s the only way to enable fast charging on the Apple Watch Series 7. And the same goes for the upcoming Galaxy Watch 5. Galaxy Watch 5 charging speed A leaker posted on Twitter images of the new Galaxy Watch 5 fast charger. It features a USB-C connector and supports 10W charging. The person also listed the speed estimate. The new smartwatch will reach 45% battery after just 30 minutes of charging. The 10W charger is an upgrade over the 5W charger that shipped with the Galaxy Watch 4 last year. According to Samsung, that device needs 110 minutes to reach a full charge. It’s unclear why Samsung doesn’t support even faster charging, considering that the Apple Watch Series 7 uses a 20W charger for faster charging. 45% in 30 minutes — SnoopyTech (@_snoopytech_) August 1, 2022 Assuming the estimate above is accurate, the 10W charger should do the job in over an hour. The Galaxy Watch 5 is also getting a larger battery than its predecessor. A larger battery and fast charging support should improve the Galaxy Watch 5 experience. It’s unclear how long the Galaxy Watch 5 will last on a charge. Samsung will also launch a larger Galaxy Watch 5 Pro alongside the regular models. The Pro should feature an even larger battery, as it’s larger than the Watch 5 models. And it’ll likely support 10W charging as well. The Pro could offer multi-day battery life, but that’s just speculation. The Galaxy Watch 4 offers a theoretical battery life of 40 hours. But daily charging might be needed for more active users. 9. Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 on August 10th, but the company is already running a massive reservation promo where you can save up to $200 just for reserving a phone. That’s a sweet deal for Samsung fans who already want to purchase a Fold 4 or Flip 4. And now we have a huge new leak that provides another helpful detail to help you decide faster. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 color options have leaked, and there will be support for Bespoke customization. Buyers are looking at 71 color choices for the Bespoke Flip 4, and the information comes directly from a Samsung website that accidentally listed the Flip 4 color options. However, it’s unclear if the Bespoke colors will be available to people who preorder the phone. Galaxy Z Flip 4 color options have leaked A Redditor found the Galaxy Z Fold 4 color choices on Samsung’s Care+ page for UK buyers. Samsung lists four primary colors for the unreleased Galaxy Z Flip 4. We’re looking at Blue, Bora Purple, Graphite, and Pink Gold. These are the main colors that will be available at launch. That means you’ll have to pick from one of those during preorders. Those colors also appeared in previous leaks, as seen below. But the Care+ page also lists all the combo options for Bespoke Flip 4 customization. The site reveals five colors available to Bespoke Flip 4 buyers: Green, Navy, Red, Yellow, and White. On top of that, you get three frame color choices: Black, Silver, and Gold. Galaxy Z Flip 4 leaked press render. Image source: MySmartPrice The Bespoke colors can be applied to the phone’s top half, bottom half, or both. Considering these factors, you end up with 23 color options for each frame. 9to5Google calculated that you get 71 unique Galaxy Z Flip 4 color combinations when taking all of the Bespoke options into account. The Care+ page also reveals that the Flip 4 will be available in the UK with 128GB and 256GB storage options. Separately, the same Samsung site listed the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Watch 5, and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, which are also unreleased. The site confirmed the Fold 4 colors: Beige, Grey/Green, and Phantom Black. Also, according to the website, the Fold 4 will come in 256GB and 512GB variants. Will preorder deals include Bespoke colors? Flip 4 and Fold 4 rumors out there say the prices will remain in line with last year’s phones for the most part. But there might be some changes. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 might be slightly more expensive than the Flip 3. The Fold 4 should have the same price as the Fold 3, but it might feature only 128GB of storage in some markets. What’s really important to remember is that Samsung has an excellent reservation promo in place that lets you cut the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 prices by up to $200. That’s on top of whatever preorder deals Samsung has in store. And Samsung is desperate to sell as many foldables as it can, even if that means throwing plenty of deals your way and cutting margins. Galaxy Z Flip 4 press image leak. Image source: 91mobiles/Evan Blass Of that $200 Samsung credit reservation deal, you get $100 for buying a 2022 foldable. The rest comes by also ordering new Samsung wearables. With that in mind, it’s unclear how the Bespoke color options might factor into Galaxy Z Flip 4 preorders. It’s a lot easier for Samsung to sell the clamshell in those four main colors. The Bespoke options might take longer to ship as they involve a customization process. That’s why buyers who want to customize the look of their Flip 4 will have to wait and see whether they can preorder Bespoke models and take advantage of all the savings. 10. After the Galaxy S22 throttling disaster involving the Exynos 2200 chip earlier this year, we saw Samsung apologize to customers and investors. The company faced plenty of criticism and scrutiny, especially in its home market. Then, Samsung vowed to create a new set of flagship chips for its best phones. But the Galaxy S23 series that launches next year will probably run on Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon processor. It’s all speculation at this point, but based on a significant announcement from Samsung and Qualcomm that claims the Korean giant will use more Snapdragon chips in its smartphones. Exynos is a major disappointment Samsung Exynos System-on-Chips (SoC) have never been able to match their Qualcomm counterparts, let alone outperform the iPhone. But Samsung kept using both Exynos and Snapdragon chips in its Galaxy S flagships for years. The Exynos 2200 is the last such flagship Samsung-made chip, powering Galaxy S22 variants sold in certain markets. And the Exynos 2200 might be the final nail in the Exynos coffin. At least until Samsung reshuffles its chips teams and develops a new processor for high-end phones. The Galaxy S23 might come only in a Qualcomm Snapdragon variant as a result. It's almost here. Stay tuned for the #ExynosOn. #Exynos_is_back https://t.co/bEfaV2qxWv pic.twitter.com/kqJGxNy4MN — Samsung Exynos (@SamsungExynos) January 12, 2021 As soon as the Galaxy S22 series came out, buyers discovered the Exynos 2200 processor would reduce performance to conserve battery life. This was more aggressive than on previous phones, implying the chip is prone to overheating when under heavy stress. The Exynos 2200 isn’t the first Samsung SoC to see criticism from buyers. Even Samsung mocked its previous Exynos variants last year while promoting the Exynos 2100. That was a chip that was supposed to fix all of the previous overheating and performance issues. Galaxy Z Fold 4 press image leak. Image source: 91mobiles/Evan Blass Galaxy S23 likely to be a Qualcomm-only affair During the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 rumors season, we learned the new foldables would come with Snapdragon chips inside. The phones would get the brand new Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC, leaks said. The 8 Plus Gen 1 is even more powerful and efficient than the 8 Gen 1 SoC that powers some Galaxy S22 variants. That meant the new Fold and Flip will not suffer the same throttling issues at the hand of the Exynos 2200. Or any version of it. Samsung, by the way, also mass-produced the 8 Gen 1 chip variant. But Qualcomm moved to TSMC for the 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC. Fast-forward to late July, and Qualcomm and Snapdragon issued a joint announcement. The two companies said they’ll extend their patent licensing agreement for seven years through 2030. More importantly, the announcement says that Snapdragon Platforms will power future Samsung Galaxy devices. The list includes “smartphones, PCs, tablets, extended reality, and more,” the press release says. Qualcomm didn’t list the Galaxy S23 as a beneficiary of the upcoming Snapdragon chips. But considering the context, it certainly seems like Snapdragon is a much better choice for Samsung’s future flagship. A report from an insider said earlier this month that Samsung would move to a Snapdragon-only strategy for the Galaxy S23 series. Also, we shouldn’t be surprised to see Samsung use only Snapdragon flagship SoCs in future flagships beyond the Galaxy S23. As much as Samsung might want to make a high-end chip of its own that can compete with Apple’s iPhone and Mac chips and Qualcomm’s Snapdragons, it won’t happen overnight. 11. Samsung will unveil its next-gen foldable phones on August 10th as it continues to try to make the most of a market where it has no real competition. The upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 have appeared in numerous leaks so far, to the point where we think we know everything there is to know about the two handsets. The newest rumor comes from Korea, providing price and preorder details for both the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4. How much will the Galaxy Z Fold 4 cost? Recent rumors from Europe gave us somewhat good news about Samsung’s pricing plans for the new foldables. We learned that the 256GB Galaxy Z Fold 4 might be €50 (about $50) more expensive than last year’s model. This implied the 256GB Fold 4 might not start at $1,799 in the US as the Fold 3 did. However, unlike last year, Samsung will reportedly have a 128GB Galaxy Z Fold 4 version in stock. If the European price leak is accurate, the Fold 4 might still start at $1,799 in the US before deals and discounts. But buyers will only get half the storage for that price. A new report from Naver details the pricing structure for the Fold 4 and Flip 4 in Korea. According to the site, Samsung will not raise the prices for the Fold 4. Galaxy Z Fold 4 press image leak. Image source: 91mobiles/Evan Blass The 256GB model will sell for 1,998,700 won in the region, just like its predecessor. If the report is accurate, the 512GB model will cost 2,097,700 won in Korea. That implies Samsung will set the starting price for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 at around $1,799. That’s what the cheapest Fold 3 cost last year, before preorder deals. Samsung is reportedly looking to push sales of foldable devices despite inflation concerns. That’s why it’s keeping prices in place for one more year. However, the report says pricing might vary depending on the market and exchange rate. [Confirmed Prices of Galaxy Z Fold4 and Flip4] Galaxy Z Fold4 (256GB): ₩1,998,700 (Likely $1799.99) Galaxy Z Fold4 (512GB): ₩2,097,700 (Likely $1899.99) Galaxy Z Flip4 (256GB): ₩1,299,000 (About $996) Galaxy Z Flip4 (512GB): ₩1,398,000 (About $1072) https://t.co/NNVN55IY1b — Dohyun Kim (@dohyun854) July 28, 2022 Flip 4 price also leaked The Galaxy Z Fold 4 might not see a price bump in Korea, but Samsung will raise the price for the Flip 4. Prices start at 1,299,000 won for the 256GB version, or 45,000 won (about $35) more expensive than last year. The report is in line with at least one report from Europe that suggested a price increase might be in order. This could translate to a price hike of about $50 for the US market. As a reminder, the Flip 3 started at $999 last year. Any price hike would get the starting price over that $1,000 mark. Samsung expects to sell more Galaxy Z Flip 4 units than Fold 4. This could explain the higher price. It’s more expensive to manufacture phones in this economy. Also, Samsung might be looking to raise revenue from the foldable handsets. Galaxy Z Flip 4 press image leak. Image source: 91mobiles/Evan Blass Preorder details leaked As high as the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 prices might be, Samsung will do everything it can to drop them via preorder promotions. The company already offers up to $200 Samsung credit for reservations, which do not force buyers to commit to purchase anything. However, only half of that creditcomes with a Fold 4 or Flip 4 preorder. Once the phones launch, Samsung will have additional preorder deals in place. The offers for Korea have leaked, according to the same Naver. Buyers who preorder one of the two foldable flagships after the August 10th event will get a free pair of Galaxy Buds 2, a protective case, and one year of Samsung Care+ extended warranty. 12. The Galaxy S23 is still a ways out, with Samsung getting ready to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 in a few weeks. But the 2023 flagship has started appearing in leaks. The newest rumor claims that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will feature the same zoom camera as its predecessor. According to a new report, it will have a 10-megapixel shooter, just like in previous years. Samsung might be looking to cut costs by sticking with a tried and true sensor for the telephoto lens. But that’s not necessarily bad considering the grim outlook for Android handset sales in the coming months. Moreover, the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s zoom performance is spectacular already. Why fix what isn’t broken? The Galaxy S Ultra introduced Samsung’s first periscope zoom cameras. The Galaxy S20 Ultra was the first Samsung phone to support 100x zoom, which was more of a marketing gimmick than a feature you could reliably use. The internet was filled at the time with camera samples at different zoom levels, but anything over 30x showed that Samsung’s Super Resolution Zoom wasn’t something most people needed. Fast forward to the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s periscope camera, and the zoom experience has improved significantly. Those samples showing 100x zoom photos are a lot cleaner. And they’re finally usable. Galaxy S23 Ultra’s zoom camera That’s not to say that Samsung can’t continue to improve the zoom experience on future phones like the Galaxy S23 Ultra. But it might do it with the help of software rather than radical hardware changes. The folks at GalaxyClub have learned that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will feature the same 10-megapixel telephoto camera as its predecessor. As a reminder, Ultra phones actually feature two zoom cameras. The Galaxy S22 Ultra features two 10-megapixel zoom cameras with similar specs. Only one of them is a periscope lens. Continue to save costs https://t.co/UIEOblifk0 — Ice universe (@UniverseIce) July 26, 2022 If the Galaxy S23 Ultra camera rumor is accurate, then the phone might also feature two 10-megapixel zoom cameras. Well-known leaker Ice Universe is already accusing Samsung of cutting costs. The Korean giant faced similar allegations earlier this year when the Galaxy S22’s throttling mess came to light. At the time, Samsung had to apologize to shareholders and customers. Among other things, Samsung said it didn’t cut costs making the Galaxy S22 series. But those discussions focused on the Galaxy S22’s chip tech and cooling abilities. The camera upgrade that really matters Getting back to the Galaxy S23 Ultra, the same Ice has praised the zoom experience of the S22 Ultra in the past. Maybe cutting costs on the zoom camera isn’t bad considering the state of the economy. The S22 Ultra zoom experience is already amazing. And we’re still looking at zoom features that users might not need in most cases. This is the video about the S22 Ultra's camera that surprised me the most. pic.twitter.com/lPkCkCZNmm — Ice universe (@UniverseIce) February 10, 2022 What’s really important in a flagship phone is the primary camera experience. And Samsung is already rumored to include a 200-megapixel sensor in the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s rear camera setup. That’s the kind of camera upgrade that will matter more than the zoom camera hardware. We’ll have plenty of time to discover the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s camera secrets. The new Samsung flagship series won’t launch until early 2023, and everything will leak by then. 13. Samsung has officially confirmed that it will unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 on August 10th. Then again, everything has seemingly already leaked. For instance, a new Galaxy Z Fold 4 price leak tells us the new foldable flagship might be slightly more expensive than last year’s. And Galaxy rumors almost always turn out to be accurate, whether it’s for traditional form factors or foldable handsets. The Fold 4 price leak comes just a few days after the Flip 4’s cost leaked in Europe. The new rumor comes from the same region, teasing slight price bumps for the new devices. That’s not surprising, considering the current state of the global economy. And it’s not necessarily bad news considering Samsung’s reservation promotion for the two handsets and the rumored upgrades. Galaxy Z Flip 4 price leak We explained just a few days ago that buyers should expect price hikes across the board for new smartphones. The pandemic and the war in Ukraine continue to impact the economy. And the costs of goods are going up. It’s not just fuel at the pump or groceries but also devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 that will see price increases. Last week’s Flip 4 price leak suggested that the price would be similar in Europe to last year’s Flip 3. An Italian blog said that the leaked price of €1,080 for the 128GB version would probably go to €1,099 for the country. That would be on par with the Flip 3’s cost last year. As a reminder, prices all throughout Europe tend to be similar, with slight variations. Also, they include tax, unlike US prices. Therefore, converting the EU price to dollars would not reflect the US price. Finally, the dollar has reached parity with the euro recently, which makes currency conversions a lot easier if you need them. With all that in mind, we explained last week that the Flip 4 might cost $999 in the US if that leak was accurate. In turn, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 price might stay at $1,799, which is what the Fold 3 cost at launch. Also, these are prices before any reservation or preorders promos that Samsung might offer. Galaxy Z Fold 4 design render: Foldable screen (top), cover screen and camera details (bottom). Image source: @OnLeaks and Smartprix How much will the Galaxy Z Fold 4 cost? But now we have a different price leak for Europe, and this time around, the Fold 4 is specifically mentioned. GizPaw found the price tags of both the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 on the website of an undisclosed European retailer. As always, with such discoveries, these might be just placeholders. Stores are preparing their websites for future sales. The information they present might not be accurate. According to the leak, the 256GB Galaxy Z Fold 4 would sell for €1,849 in this European market, or €50 higher than last year. The price for the 512GB option would go up by €100, from €1,899 to €1,999. The same retailer posted prices for the Flip 4 handset, which are in line with last week’s quotes. The 128GB starts at €1,080. But GizPaw says that’s actually €30 more expensive than the Flip 3’s €1,049 starting price. Assuming the information above is accurate, US prices might see similar hikes come August 10th. Galaxy Z Flip 4 press image leak. Image source: 91mobiles/Evan Blass It’s not all bad news There might be ways to mitigate the higher prices. First, Samsung offers fans up to $200 credit for preorder registrations. That might be enough to offset the price increase, considering that Samsung should offer various preorder deals for the phones. Secondly, there’s a rumor that says the Fold 4 might also come in an 128GB version. That might be a way for Samsung to keep the $1,799 price tag in place for one more year. If you don’t mind having just half the Fold 3’s storage, then you might be able to purchase the Galaxy Z Fold 4 for $1,799 before deals and discounts. Nothing is official, however. These are all assumptions based on a myriad of rumors. And while Galaxy leaks usually turn out to be true, Samsung still has time to change its pricing scheme for the 2022 foldables. 14. Samsung is trying to make its SmartSSD even smarter. The company recently unveiled the second generation of its computational SSDs. Samsung says the new SmartSSD will process data faster and reduce latency between the SSD and the CPU. This should help cut down on concerns about the CPU bottlenecking the speed at which the SmartSSD performs. New Samsung SmartSSD can process your data 50% faster, Samsung claims Samsung says that its new SmartSSD can process data 50% faster than the previous generation. It also uses 70 percent less power and reduces CPU utilization by 97 percent compared to standard SSD devices. That means the new SmartSSD should allow you to make use of your frequently accessed data without any bottlenecking. This isn’t Samsung’s first foray into computational storage, either. As noted above, this is the company’s second generation SmartSSD. The first offering wasn’t bad, offering some improvements over traditional storage options. However, with the new features and technology that Samsung’s SmartSSD now offers, you can expect it to push the bar a bit more. Samsung also has a long history with SSDs. Making gains Image source: Samsung One of the ways that Samsung’s new SmartSSD improved upon traditional is by removing the need to process information access on the CPU. It does this thanks to a system built into the SSD itself. AMD Xilinx Versal FPGA powers the SSD. Essentially, AMD Xilinx Versal FPGA allows Samsung’s SmartSSD to skip sending data to other components to process. It’s a good move, and one that’s proving to be useful, especially in systems where data movement is important. For the moment, Samsung’s SmartSSD is more geared towards the AI/ML inferencing market. That means users who rely on analytics and transcoding will be able to rely on the faster speed of the SmartSSD to be able to process their data quicker. For now, the new system is being pushed for commercial use. It’s unclear exactly when they might become more individualized. For now, though, Samsung is showing some noticeable gains in a market where users might not see much of a problem. However, with data processing becoming more important for different companies, it’s important to streamline the process as much as possible. 15. Samsung formally announced its new 3nm chip technology a few weeks ago. But the Korean giant will reportedly showcase the world’s first such processor next week. Samsung unveiled the 3nm chip’s new Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistor architecture, which is supposed to be significantly more efficient and faster than current 5nm chips. While Samsung has started mass-production on the new 3nm chips that will hopefully power flagship phones like the Galaxy S one day, it’s unclear what these devices might be. It’s also not clear if Samsung has a chance to actually steal any business from TSMC. The Taiwanese foundry builds the most important mobile processors in the world right now. Samsung’s new 3nm chips look good on paper Samsung said in its original announcement that the new 3nm GAA chips will offer plenty of reasons to upgrade from the current 5nm tech. The GAA tech will bring substantial efficiency gains that should improve battery life. That’s on top of significant performance improvements and size reduction: In addition, the design flexibility of GAA is highly advantageous for Design Technology Co-Optimization (DTCO),1 which helps boost Power, Performance, Area (PPA) benefits. Compared to 5nm process, the first-generation 3nm process can reduce power consumption by up to 45%, improve performance by 23% and reduce area by 16% compared to 5nm, while the second-generation 3nm process is to reduce power consumption by up to 50%, improve performance by 30% and reduce area by 35%. But the specs alone aren’t enough to guarantee the success of Samsung’s semiconductor business in winning 3nm chip orders from major companies. TSMC continues to be the main Samsung rival. Among others, TSMC manufactures all the A-series and M-Series chips that Apple uses in iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Even the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chips that will power many Android flagships in the second half of 2022 are coming from TSMC plants. Samsung’s 3nm GAA chip tech compared to 5nm FinFET. Image source: Samsung Not to mention that Samsung dropped the ball on the Exynos 2200, the equivalent of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The processor powers some Galaxy S22 versions, having caused a major PR nightmare for Samsung earlier this year. Samsung also mass-produced the original Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor before Qualcomm moved to TSMC. When will Samsung use 3nm chips in its Galaxy S smartphones? Samsung vowed to create a new flagship chip for future flagship phones after the Galaxy S22 throttling disaster. The company didn’t offer specifics, and it’s unclear whether the chip will be based on the new 3nm GAA technology. A report from Korea indicates that Samsung has scheduled a launch ceremony for the 3nm chips for July 25th. But the first company to purchase the new Samsung chip will be a Chinese cryptocurrency mining company. That’s not the kind of customer that will help Samsung steal business from TSMC. Moreover, reports say that Samsung is still struggling to increase the yield of its 3nm chips to make them profitable. And Samsung is far from ramping up production of the new processors. Meanwhile, TSMC will start manufacturing 3nm FinFET chips this month. GAA chips will follow in 2025. The post Samsung will reveal the world’s first 3nm chip next week appeared first on BGR. 16. Samsung is a couple of weeks away from returning to the Unpacked stage. This time, it’ll unveil new foldable devices and wearable gadgets. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 will be the main stars of the event, although Samsung fans also expect the Watch 5 and brand new Galaxy Buds, come August 10th. Almost everything has leaked about the new foldable phones in the past few weeks. The only thing missing was the price for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4, but there’s a rumor about that. The European pricing structure for the Flip 4 has leaked, indicating that Samsung might not plan any significant price changes for the more affordable foldable handset. The Flip 4 should cost just as much as its predecessor in the region, so we’d expect Samsung to keep the Fold 4 price in place as well. Smartphone price hikes shouldn’t be a surprise Flagship smartphone vendors routinely keep last year’s pricing structure in place, but 2022 isn’t a regular year, and foldable phones aren’t regular flagships. The massive inflation following the pandemic and the war in Ukraine has forced suppliers to increase prices. In turn, smartphone makers might pass those costs to the consumer. That’s not great news for Samsung foldable devices, which continue to be more expensive than traditional flagships. Samsung has lowered the prices since the first Fold and Flip models. And the company throws plenty of promos at consumers in a bid to reduce the entry cost. But Samsung phones are more expensive than their counterparts from China. Luckily for Samsung, those rival devices aren’t widely available. Considering all these conditions, it’s clear that Samsung can’t offer massive price discounts for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 this year. At best, Samsung can keep prices in place for one more year. That’s what the new leak suggests. Galaxy Z Flip 4 leaked press render. Image source: MySmartPrice Galaxy Z Flip 4 price in Europe As always, with European Union prices for goods, we’ll remind you that the prices below factor in tax. That’s how it works. Therefore, converting the prices in dollars will not get you the full picture. On the other hand, since the dollar and the euro reached parity, converting the prices below is very simple. That said, a new report provides the purported prices for the Galaxy Z Flip 4 variants. Here’s what buyers in the EU might expect: 128GB Galaxy Z Flip 4: $1,080256GB Galaxy Z Flip 4: $1,160512GB Galaxy Z Flip 4: $1,280 Whatever the final price for the Flip 4, the entire EU region will offer a similar pricing structure, with small variations. Italian blog Tutto Android speculates that the 128GB model might cost $1,099 in Italy. That price point is in line with the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s cost last year. Galaxy Z Fold 4 press image leak. Image source: 91mobiles/Evan Blass How to reduce the cost of foldable phones. If the Flip 4 price quotes are accurate, we’d expect Samsung to keep the Flip 3 prices in various markets. The new affordable foldable might start at $999 in the US before all the deals. Similarly, Fold 4 might keep the Fold 3 starting price in place. That’s $1,799 before deals and promos. But you might get just 128GB of storage instead of 256GB like last year. The good news is that Samsung will have plenty of preorder deals for fans. You can start saving right away by registering your interest to preorder. You score at least $100 in savings for either the Fold 4 or Flip 4. And savings go up to $200 if you also register to preorder the new Samsung wearables. The post Galaxy Z Flip 4 leak indicates no price changes for affordable foldable appeared first on BGR. 17. A new Samsung Calendar update introduces several key improvements to the app. It will also allow users to create new events much easier. Samsung’s calendar app has always been useable, but this new update could make it even more useful for Android smartphone users. New Samsung Calendar update brings several new features The Samsung Calendar update will be available on all supported Samsung devices. Image source: Samsung The newest version of Samsung Calendar will now allow users to create events more easily. The app appears to utilize a system similar to the now-defunct language processing system that Google Calendar used to utilize. The Samsung Calendar update also introduces better invitation management. And you’ll be able to add recommendations quicker, too. Version 12.3.05.10000 of the Samsung Calendar app offers all of these improvements. They all tie in easily with the features that already exist in the app, including some you may not be aware of. One big improvement is the option to check group calendar invitations from the calendar management page. This is the page you’d normally check to determine how you view your calendar within the app. Changing how the app handles event creation Image source: Samsung Of course, the most notable improvement is a change to how this Samsung Calendar update connects a time and location to your event. Previously, the app could determine the time an event should be set based on the title. For example, writing “Lunch at 2” into the event’s title would cause the app to suggest a time of 2 pm for the event. The update will also make it simpler to determine your event’s location. Now, if you type “Lunch at 2 at Byron’s Steakhouse”, it will suggest a location with the latest Samsung Calendar update. And, if you don’t want to keep all that information in the event, you can now remove it easily, too. Simply head into the Calendar settings and select “Remove times from event titles” to clean up the event title. This is a similar feature that used to be available in Google Calendar. Google removed it back during a calendar redesign in 2018, though. It’s unclear why Google removed the option, but it definitely makes creating events much easier. So it is nice to see it make some kind of return in the latest Samsung Calendar update On top of the new update making events easier to create, managing them will be easier, too. And, you’ll be able to add friends and family members to the invitation list more easily. The post Samsung Calendar update adds key improvements and natural language processing appeared first on BGR. 18. Like clockwork, Samsung president and head of the mobile division TM Roh penned a blog this week, just a few weeks ahead of the upcoming Unpacked press conference that will focus on this year’s Galaxy Z foldable phones, the Fold 4 and Flip 4. We saw the same thing happen last year, and we now expect Roh to keep writing similar blogs with every Fold and Flip release. Roh just hinted that Samsung sold a massive number of foldable phones in 2021 by mentioning a figure of 10 million foldable phone sales for the period. Or so it seems. Because, when you think about it, 10 million units is a drop in the bucket for Samsung, whose smartphone sales routinely pass 250 million units a year. Roh’s remarks indicate what some consumers might have already realized: Foldable phones might not be worth it yet. What Samsung really needs is a foldable iPhone to lead the way. Foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold and Flip are fascinating on paper. They offer larger screens and smaller footprints. The Fold is especially exciting as it lets the user make the most of two types of devices — a smartphone and a tablet. A brief history of Samsung’s foldable phones Samsung has been at the forefront of foldable handsets for years. It teased the form factor well before the technology was ready. And then it released the first Galaxy Fold before actually testing it properly in real-life environments. The initial launch failed miserably, as Samsung had to find fixes for critical design flaws that led to the destruction of the phone. The Fold 2 and Fold 3 significantly improved the phone’s durability, especially the latter. The Fold 3 is the best possible foldable phone that Samsung can make. And even so, the Fold 3 is hardly perfect. The Fold 4 should fix some of the usability and design issues the Fold 3 suffers from. The new foldable will have a larger external display and weigh less than its predecessor. Galaxy Fold (2019) teardown highlights the phone’s design issues. Image source: iFixit But Samsung’s foldables aren’t true flagships like the Galaxy S and Note. The Fold series actually helped “kill” the Note without replacing it. The camera experience is still unable to match that of the Galaxy S Ultra, although the Fold 4 might change that. The Flip 4 is even further away. Not to mention that Samsung can’t fully control the software. Samsung’s success in the foldable business hinges on Google’s willingness to adapt Android for foldable screens. And it’s up to Google to convince Android app developers to update their apps to make the most of Fold and Flip phones. But why go through all that hassle for just 10 million potential customers? Add to that the flagship price for a somewhat fragile, not-flagship device, and you’ll get why people won’t want a foldable instead of a traditional phone, especially in this economy. Are foldables really going mainstream? This brings us to Roh’s new post about Samsung foldable phones titled The Mainstream Moment for Foldable Smartphones Is Here. In this post, he said the industry registered almost 10 million foldable smartphone sales worldwide last year. That’s an increase of more than 300% from 2020. And Roh says he predicts “this fast-paced growth will continue.” “We are reaching the moment where these foldable devices are becoming widespread and staking a bigger claim in the overall smartphone market,” he said. A quick back-of-the-napkin calculation tells us that handset makers should sell 30 million foldable phones this year to keep that 300% pace in place. That is hardly reasonable for the economy we’re currently living in. Not to mention that some estimates see Samsung selling only 15 million foldable phones in 2022. It’s unlikely that Chinese companies can make up for the rest. And a foldable iPhone isn’t coming anytime soon. Google apps running on Galaxy Fold 3 foldable. Image source: Google How many Galaxy Z Fold 3 units did Samsung sell? Then, Samsung might sell only 10 million Fold 5 and Flip 5 units in 2023. If these estimates are accurate, Samsung’s foldable sales will grow by 50% this year compared to the entire industry’s performance in 2021. And then they’ll stay flat next year in a best-case scenario. To put things in perspective, Apple routinely sells around 200 million iPhones yearly. For massive profits and without crazy deals in place. Also, annual smartphone shipments have reached at least 1.28 billion units per year since 2014. Meanwhile, reports say that Apple can’t make a foldable iPhone because it can’t mass-produce enough foldable glass covers to satisfy its needs. That implies that foldable iPhone volumes would be so large no supplier could handle the parts order. Not even Samsung, whose foldable phone tech might very well end up inside a foldable iPhone. Let’s also observe that Roh did not reveal which foldable smartphones sold the best. Last year, Samsung sold four foldable handsets: The Fold 2, Flip 2, Fold 3, and Flip 3. But he did say that 70% of Samsung’s buyers opted for the Flip experience rather than the Fold. The Note would have probably outsold all Samsung foldables combined last year. But Samsung had no Note 21 in stores. Apple’s iPhone SE 2 outsold the Galaxy Folds and Flips combined. And while that’s a mid-range device, it still delivers better durability and performance than any Samsung flagship. Oppo Find N foldable phone. Image source: Christian de Looper for BGR Where the foldable iPhone could help These are all signs that Samsung’s foldable phones while doing well, are hardly getting to be mainstream devices. And while Samsung has been selling more foldables than anybody else, it barely has any competition. Some of the exciting foldable phones from China aren’t available widely. Not to mention that Samsung ran massive campaigns to convince buyers to try and keep foldable phones. You could try the Fold 2 for 100 days and then return it. Or trade in everything but the kitchen sink to buy a Fold 3, with a retail price starting at $1,799. The Fold 4 isn’t out yet, but you can already save up to $200 on it by reserving the right to preorder it. Concept image of a foldable iPhone with a clamshell design. Image source: ConceptsiPhone/YouTube Time will tell whether Samsung can accelerate the rate of foldable smartphone innovations without a real competitor to pressure it. And whether foldables will go mainstream with Samsung as the locomotive. But that’s where a foldable iPhone would really help. Samsung would not rest on its laurels and write self-congratulatory blog posts every summer if a foldable iPhone were to launch just a few weeks after the newest Fold. Also, the more time that passes without a foldable iPhone, the harder it will be for Samsung to replace the traditional smartphone with a foldable form factor. And at 10 million units sold annually, that’s hardly going mainstream. That’s because something else might kill traditional smartphones: The sophisticated AR glasses of the future. And that sort of tech is a priority for Apple. That’s not to say all the tech Samsung has devised for foldable phones won’t come in handy. But the world might use it to create other types of foldable devices instead of phones. The post Why Samsung needs Apple to make a foldable iPhone appeared first on BGR. View the full article
  19. Samsung has allegedly cancelled the Galaxy S22 FE. The Fan Edition of Samsung’s latest flagship was expected to arrive sometime this year. However, new reports point towards Samsung dumping it in favor of meeting the demands for the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Samsung Galaxy S22 FE cancelled, new reports claim The Samsung Galaxy S22 FE would have included the same chip as the S22 Ultra, which is shown above. Image source: Samsung Reports of the Galaxy S22 FE cancellation were first noted by TheElec. That original report, which was translated from Korean, says that Samsung cancelled the Galaxy S22 FE in order to expand on supply for the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The S22 Ultra is the company’s current high-end flagship. With the ongoing chip shortages, the company has reportedly been struggling to keep up with demand for the device. TheElec says that Samsung originally planned to produce around 3 million units of the Galaxy S22 FE model. However, the S22 FE would have used the same chip as the S22 Ultra. Instead, Samsung decided to save supply for the Ultra. Samsung has yet to share any official notes about the Galaxy S22 FE being cancelled. There were previous reports about Samsung swapping the FE version to a Mediatek chip. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case now. The chip shortage has had an immense impact on the mobile industry for the past several years. And it looks like the Galaxy S22 FE is simply another victim of that shortage. The Fan Edition returns in 2023 The last Fan Edition to hit the market was Samsung’s Galaxy S21 FE. Image source: Samsung While Samsung has most likely canceled the Galaxy S22 FE, it will return with the Galaxy S23 FE in 2023. Hopefully, by then much of the chip shortage will have returned to normal. According to reports, Samsung plans to manufacture 3 million units for the S23 FE. However, we’ll need to wait and see how everything pans out in the long run. The unprecedented success of the S22 Ultra during a time when chip shortages are still affecting the mobile industry is notable. And it makes sense for Samsung to push its manufacturing supply toward the higher-end device. Still, there is a lot of love out there for the company’s Fan Editions. And the Galaxy S22 FE’s cancellation may be disappointing for many. But, keep in mind that this is not official news. All I can recommend right now is to wait for additional confirmation from Samsung on the cancellation. It’s still possible that the device could drop in the coming months. Or, these reports could prove true, and the S22 FE may never see the light of day. The post Samsung dumps Galaxy S22 FE in favor of extra S22 Ultra supply appeared first on BGR. View the full article
  20. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 have appeared in a number of rumors so far that have revealed nearly everything there is to know about the 2022 Samsung foldables. The only thing that hasn’t leaked is the new pricing structure. But Samsung is already willing to offer you up to $200 in credit for Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 reservations. The reservations guarantee that you can preorder one of the two devices once Samsung announces them on August 10th. But you can always cancel your reservation if you don’t like what you see. Or if you don’t like the price. Keep in mind, the maximum $200 credit is available only if you’re willing to reserve one of the newest foldables and two of the new Samsung wearables. Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 reservation deals Samsung’s reservation system isn’t new, as the company has been offering reservations for its flagship devices for a few years. The company confirmed rumors that the next Unpacked event will take place on August 10th and put up the reservation page at this link. All you have to do to reserve your Galaxy Z Fold 4 or Z Flip 4 is select all of the devices you are thinking about buying next month and then fill out the form. Once that’s done, you’ll get up to $200 in Samsung credit on top of whatever deals Samsung has in place for the new foldables. And considering last year’s promotional offers, it’s likely that Samsung will do everything it can to make the price of the Fold 4 and Flip 4 more manageable. Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 reservation page. Image source: Samsung Samsung’s reservation page doesn’t mention the Galaxy Z Fold 4 or Flip 4. Similarly, it doesn’t list the Galaxy Watch 5 or the name of the next-gen Galaxy Buds earphones. But the company practically confirms it’ll unveil new phones, watches, and wireless earphones at the event. Here are the savings offered depending on which upcoming Galaxy products you reserve: Phones: Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 reservation – $100 Samsung creditWatches: Galaxy Watch 5 reservation – $50 Samsung creditEarphones: Galaxy Buds reservation – $30 Samsung creditReserve all of the above – $200 Samsung credit You can also mix and match the reservation offers above to get your desired savings. Maybe you only want to buy the new wearables, in which case you can score up to $80 in savings. Or perhaps you want to combine the Fold 4 or Flip 4 with the new watch. In this case, you can expect $150 in savings. How much will the new foldables cost? The Galaxy Z Fold 4 reservation process is commitment-free. You won’t be forced to purchase any of the products you select. But if you decide to go forward with preorders, you can expect the reservation deals to stack on top of whatever preorder offers Samsung has planned. The only thing missing at this point is the price for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4. Last year’s models started at $1,799 and $999, respectively. Since then, various Chinese smartphone makers have come out with Fold-like devices that are much more affordable. That should put more pressure on Samsung. Galaxy Z Fold 4 press image leak. Image source: 91mobiles/Evan Blass But the Chinese handsets aren’t as widely available as the Fold and Flip models. Not to mention that the current economy might prevent Samsung from lowering the price for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 significantly. Recent leaks told us the Fold 4 might come in a 128GB variant. Storage starts at 256GB for the Galaxy Z Fold 3. That means the Fold 4 might be cheaper before reservation and preorder deals. Or that Samsung will actually raise prices this year in response to the rising inflation. Whatever the case, Samsung will surely offer ways to lower the immediate cost of the foldables. The reservation deals, trade-in offers, and activation promos might significantly cut the Fold 4 and Flip 4 down payment. 21. The Galaxy S23 Ultra might feature a 200-megapixel primary camera, says an insider familiar with Samsung’s plans. Similar sensors are already in use or will come on other Android flagships. And it so happens that Samsung has a few Isocell sensors with 200 megapixels. But Ice Universe says it’s unclear which sensor will end up in the upcoming Galaxy S23 Ultra that will be released next year. Ice Universe often leaks details about unreleased Samsung devices on Twitter. While it might seem too early for Galaxy S23 Ultra rumors, the leaker already shared some camera specs on social media. He posted the image below, which reportedly comes from an upcoming Motorola flagship phone. The primary camera is a 200-megapixel sensor that the leaker identifies as HP1. That’s short for Isocell HP1, a 200-megapixel sensor that Samsung unveiled last year. The Moto flagship phone has a 200MP sensor (HP1) and you're looking at a 4 in 1 photo, 50MP. The Galaxy S23 Ultra will also use 200MP, but the relevant sensor has not been announced. pic.twitter.com/Fc8JzCppKp — Ice universe (@UniverseIce) July 14, 2022 In this context, Ice claimed that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will also feature a 200-megapixel sensor. However, it’s unclear which sensor Samsung will employ for its upcoming flagship. The HP1 isn’t the latest camera innovation from Samsung, as the company has an updated HP3 200-megapixel sensor in production. The leaker is also very vocal on Twitter when it comes to criticizing what he perceives as Samsung’s failures when it comes to mobile devices. He criticized the Galaxy S22 processor’s performance and One UI features in the past. More recently, he addressed issues with the Galaxy S22 camera’s performance. Samsung Isocell HP1 camera tech. Image source: Samsung Do phones need 200-megapixel sensors? Unlike its early days in the smartphone business, Samsung no longer increases the camera megapixel count on its smartphones just for the sake of bragging about specs. The Galaxy S20 Ultra came with a 108-megapixel sensor three years ago, but the upgrade was walked back with the Ultra’s larger camera setup. The Galaxy S22 Ultra also rocks a 108-megapixel wide-angle camera. If Ice’s claims are correct, the Galaxy S23 Ultra might be the first Galaxy S flagship to get a 200-megapixel camera. Samsung unveiled the Isocell HP1 sensor last year without specifying which smartphones would get the 200-megapixel camera. We now know Samsung never meant to use the camera on its 2022 flagships. A few weeks ago, Samsung unveiled the HP3 camera, which is also a 200-megapixel sensor. The video below explains the benefits of the sensor. In short, these cameras will improve resolution in well-lit environments. But they will automatically combine pixels and reduce the overall resolution to improve low-light and night photography. The HP3 sensor should deliver improved autofocus and better HDR algorithms. Moreover, Samsung also says the Isocell HP3 camera will support 8K video recording at up to 30fps. That said, the Isocell HP3 might not be the 200-megapixel camera that Samsung uses for the Galaxy S23 Ultra next year. Instead, Samsung might tweak it to create a custom version for the upcoming flagship. But that’s just speculation at this point. The Galaxy S23 series should launch in early 2023. By then, all of the camera specs will have leaked and we’ll know exactly what sort of camera experience Samsung plans to offer. 22. It’s typically a matter of when, not if, an upcoming smartphone will leak in full ahead of the official reveal. On Tuesday morning, press renders of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 leaked online. We had a good idea of what Samsung’s next-gen foldable phones would look like already, but now the final designs are floating around online. Galaxy Z Fold 4, Z Flip 4 press images leak First up is a rather blurry press render of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 from MySmartPrice. According to the site, the leaked image above comes from an industry insider. At a glance, the new phone looks virtually identical to its predecessor. Galaxy Z Flip 4 leaked press render. Image source: MySmartPrice On the left, we see an unfolded Galaxy Z Flip 4 with its 6.7-inch AMOLED display, with a USB-C charging port, speaker grille, and mic at the bottom. On the right side, we can see a number of folded Z Flips. The Z Flip 4 will reportedly come in lavender, cream, black, and blue colorways. The back of the Z Flip 4 will once again feature a dual camera setup, but rumors claim the new model is getting a 2.1-inch cover screen. That would be a touch larger than the 1.9-inch cover screen of the Z Flip 3. Finally, the report notes that the Z Flip 4 will feature a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor, a 3,700mAh battery, up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, a 12-megapixel primary camera and 12-megapixel ultrawide camera, and support for 25W fast charging. Higher-quality leaked images The same morning, Evan Blass (@evleaks) shared even higher-quality press images of both the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 on 91mobiles. In the Z Flip 4 press render from Blass, it’s easier to see the hole-punch selfie camera: Galaxy Z Flip 4 press image leak. Image source: 91mobiles/Evan Blass Next, we have our best look yet at the Galaxy Z Fold 4. It’s hard to gather much from a shot of the phone when it’s unfolded, but Blass claims that the phone will be available in Phantom Black, Beige, and Gray Green. We can also make out the metal shell of the phone and the side-mounted power button with a fingerprint sensor: Galaxy Z Fold 4 press image leak. Image source: 91mobiles/Evan Blass Previous rumors have suggested that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will feature a 7.6-inch main display, 6.2-inch cover screen, a triple rear camera setup (50MP+12MP+10MP), Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor, 12GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of internal storage. In addition to a recent spate of leaks, Samsung has also seemingly confirmed the date of its next Galaxy Unpacked event. The company tweeted out this series of cryptic images on Monday hinting at the date of its next major product reveal: We have a secret to tell you. #SamsungUnpacked — Samsung Mobile (@SamsungMobile) July 18, 2022 If you solve the puzzle, it offers up the following number: 081022. That would translate to August 10th, 2022, which just happens to be the date that Evan Blass shared on Twitter on Monday morning. We’ll finally see the new foldables on that date. 23. Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 next month. New rumors claim the Unpacked press conference will take place on August 10th, which is in line with expectations. Everything but the price has leaked, so we know what to expect from the upcoming Samsung foldable flagships. New Galaxy flagships usually leak several months ahead of their launches, including new foldables. But, in an unexpected twist, the Fold 5’s key specs have leaked with more than a year to go until it’s ready for release. These include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC that should be launched later this year and a 50-megapixel camera. What to expect from the Galaxy Z Fold 4 It’s easy to speculate on a foldable Android flagship like the Galaxy Z Fold 5. The handset should deliver a familiar design. Moreover, the Fold 5 specs will be on par with other 2023 Android high-end phones. We don’t expect significant changes for the Fold 5 design, given what Samsung is doing with Fold 4. The handset has appeared in various leaks, and we know it’ll look just like its predecessor. Samsung is changing the aspect ratio so users can operate the Fold 4 better when folded. The phone should also feature a new hinge mechanism that will help Samsung reduce the overall weight. The Fold 4 will also be at least as durable as its predecessor, despite the weight and size changes. As for the specs, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will run on Qualcomm’s newest Snapdragon System-on-Chip (SoC) flagship, the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. Thankfully, there reportedly won’t be an Exynos 2200 variant of the phone. Therefore, buyers don’t have to worry about performance issues similar to the Galaxy S22. The Fold 4 should also deliver an improved camera experience with a 50-megapixel primary camera, 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and 10-megapixel telephoto camera. The Fold 4 will also feature a 4-megapixel selfie camera hidden under the foldable display. A secondary 10-megapixel selfie camera punches through the outer display. Other specs include 12GB of RAM, 128GB of base storage (going up to 1TB), 4,400 mAh battery, and 25W fast-charging. Galaxy Z Fold 4 design render: Foldable screen (top), cover screen and camera details (bottom). Image source: @OnLeaks and Smartprix The Fold 5 specs leak With that in mind, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will likely pack the same overall design as its predecessors, although it’s probably too early for design leaks. But a Korean report mentions the phone’s main specs about a year earlier than expected. According to The Elec, the Fold 5 specs will include the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC that Qualcomm will launch later this year. That’s the kind of guess any Android fan can make, however. The report also mentions specs details for the cameras. The Fold 5 will reportedly pack Samsung’s Isocell GN3 50-megapixel wide camera. The GN3 sensor features 1.0μm pixels. Meanwhile, the selfie camera will feature a 12-megapixel sensor. These should both be upgrades over the Fold 3 and Fold 4 cameras. But this year’s model will also have a 50-megapixel primary camera. The report doesn’t mention additional Fold 5 specs, focusing instead on Samsung’s overall strategy for the 2023 foldable market. The Elec says Samsung is aiming to sell 10 million Fold 5 and Flip 5 units next year. Only 2 million of those are expected to be Fold 5 units. That seems like a healthy figure for the company, which continues to be the primary beneficiary of foldable phone sales after the success of the Fold 3 and Flip 3. But the 10 million figure is actually lower than this year’s expected Samsung foldable phone sales. Samsung apparently wants to sell 15 million foldable phones this year. But the company expects demand to drop significantly in 2023. Also, the ongoing war in Ukraine will continue to impact the prices of commodities. Plus, the resurgence of COVID-19 is another thing to worry about. Combined with worries about the economy and a recession, these factors might reduce demand for all sorts of goods, foldable phones included. 24. We knew Samsung was gearing up to announce new foldable phones, but we weren’t sure exactly when it would happen. But now a new leak has spoiled the date of Samsung’s latest Unpacked event. On Monday morning, leaker Evan Blass tweeted out a leaked promotional image for the next Galaxy Unpacked event. The image reveals that Samsung will debut the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 on August 10th. Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 reveal set for August The image appears to be the invite that members of the press will likely receive in the days ahead. The date appears to the left of a blurry device, which is almost certainly the Galaxy Z Flip 4. As always, Samsung will stream the event live on its website. **THIS IMAGE HAS BEEN EDITED TO OBFUSCATE CERTAIN DETAIL** See what I did there? pic.twitter.com/BrH4sT99yU — Evan Blass (@evleaks) July 18, 2022 Blass claimed in a follow-up tweet that the title of the event will be “Unfold Your World,” referring to the new foldable phones. Of course, foldable phones won’t be the only new devices to surface at the event. Front Page Tech host Jon Prosser previously leaked the date of the Unpacked event in June. At that time, he said the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro smartwatches would launch alongside the foldables on August 10th and begin shipping on August 26th. He also spoiled the color options for all five new models Samsung will announce: Galaxy Z Fold 4: Phantom Black, Green, BeigeGalaxy Z Flip 4: Graphite, Bora Purple, Pink Gold, BlueGalaxy Watch 5 (40mm): Phantom Black, Silver, Pink GoldGalaxy Watch 5 (44mm): Phantom Black, Silver, SapphireGalaxy Watch 5 Pro: Phantom Black, Silver Samsung typically announces the dates of its Unpacked streams two weeks ahead of time. Therefore, we expect an official confirmation next week. Leaked specifications and features According to previous leaks, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will feature a 7.6-inch QXGA+ AMOLED main display, a 6.2-inch HD+ AMOLED front display, Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, 12GB of RAM, up to 512GB of storage, 4400mAh battery, and triple rear camera. Leaked benchmarks have also given us an idea of the power of the Galaxy Z Flip 4, and fans should be excited. Twitter leaker Ice Universe said that the power consumption performance of the 4nm chip in the Z Flip 4 will be better than that of Samsung’s chips. 25. We’re only about a month away from Samsung’s second most important press conference of the year. The upcoming Unpacked event will introduce the 2022 Galaxy Z foldables, including the Fold 4 and Flip 4. Almost everything has leaked about the new handsets, and we think we know the design and specs updates coming this year. After leaks indicating a major storage upgrade for the Galaxy Z Fold 4, we have a more definitive rumor on the matter. And it also lists the various launch colors for the Galaxy Z Fold 4, including a new Burgundy Red option. Will the Galaxy Z Fold 4 feature expandable microSD storage? Galaxy Z Fold 4 buyers should care more about storage than color options, although some might disagree. Most smartphones ship with 128GB of storage on board these days, iPhones included. Therefore, customers shouldn’t have immediate storage issues with their brand-new handsets. Galaxy Z Fold 4 design render: Foldable screen (top), cover screen and camera details (bottom). Image source: @OnLeaks and Smartprix But Android users upgrading from smartphones that come with microSD support should not expect to use the cards with the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Samsung has been phasing out expandable storage from its flagships. Buyers who need a lot of local data should consider upgrading the memory at purchase. A report a few days ago suggested that Samsung might launch the Galaxy Z Fold 4 in two storage options: 512GB and 1TB of flash memory. That seemed both good and bad news. Bumping the storage to 512GB for the base model would be incredible. But that would imply that Samsung can’t drop the Fold 4 price this year. Storage doesn’t come cheap unless Samsung is ready to eat the costs. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 color options Evan Blass posted on Twitter what appears to be a screenshot of an inventory system of some sort. In it, we can see the various Galaxy Z Fold 4 color options and storage tiers. pic.twitter.com/1kku5CAQdU — Evan Blass (@evleaks) July 13, 2022 The good news is that storage will not start at 512GB, as the previous leak implied. Instead, Samsung will offer buyers the regular storage tiers: 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. That means Fold fans can still dream of a lower entry price for the handset. That’s because the Fold 3 isn’t available in a 128GB version. The listing doesn’t mention any 1TB option. But it’s likely that Samsung will offer that storage tier in some markets. Moving on to colors, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 might come in at least four colors at launch. The listing mentions Beige, Burgundy Red, Gray Green, and Phantom Black. The Burgundy Red model will only come in 256GB and 512GB storage options. That said, pricing details for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 aren’t available. However, they’ll probably leak well before Samsung’s upcoming Fold 4 and Flip 4 launch event.
