Getting Approved to Publish Watch Faces in Galaxy Store

Recommended Posts

2020-08-11-01-banner.jpg

In order to offer the best experience for consumers in Galaxy Store, watch face sellers must first be approved to publish. This approval is done by submitting an initial watch face design that demonstrates your ability to create exceptional, unique, high-quality watch faces and abide by copyright laws. This process is called a Watch Face Design Review Request.

Approval of new designers by the Galaxy Watch Review Team is very limited and only exceptional designers will be granted access to publishing their watch faces in Galaxy Store.

When can new designers apply?

Applications are only accepted during certain times of the year, this is called the “Open Window”. Visit the Watch Face Design Review page to check the status of the current application window and future open window dates.

What are the application requirements?

Applications must be submitted as a single (multi-page) PDF and include the following information:

Personal Information

  • A cover letter (in English) that contains a brief paragraph saying who you are, why you want to sell watch faces, and how your designs will enhance a Galaxy Watch owner’s experience
  • If you are a business, a copy of DBA or articles of association or organization
  • Experiences that qualify you to design and sell watch faces such as certificates or diplomas from design schools or universities, design awards, or other design experiences
  • Links to your design portfolio (website, Instagram, Facebook page, or other social media sites)
  • List of unique features or design elements that set your designs apart from others
  • Understanding of Intellectual Property rights, specifically section 3.2 of the App Distribution Guide, regarding Intellectual Property. State in a few sentences what Intellectual Property rights are and who is responsible.

Watch Face Designs

  • Include up to five watch face designs for review.
  • One image of the main screen of your watch face design at a minimum dimension of 360 x 360 pixels.
  • One image of your watch face applied to a watch. See below for details on generating images, tools you can use, and information about how to capture your watch face design.
  • Optionally, provide any additional images that demonstrate the features of your watch face that are not shown in the main screen image (animations, tap reveal buttons, etc.).
  • All watch face designs should be added as separate pages to your application PDF.
  • Do NOT include binary files such as the .tpk or .gwd files.

Submitting copyright protected content

If you are submitting copyrighted content, you must include the license or official documentation showing permission to use the content with your application.

Copyright protected content may include, but is not limited to brand identifiers, public institutions, sports clubs/teams, media, products, landmarks, images of people, and original or artistic renderings of copyright protected content.

If a license or official documentation showing permission is not included, your application will be rejected.

How to apply for review

When the window for applying is open,

  1. Go to Watch Face Design Review Request.
Watch Face Design Review Request button
  2. Log in using your Samsung account. If you do not have an account, sign up here.
  3. Provide the required information explained in the Application Requirements section above.

Once the application window closes the Galaxy Watch Review Team may take several weeks to review all applications. At the completion of the review, applicants will be notified by email whether or not they have been selected to become watch face publishers.

After a designer has been approved, all future watch face designs are only tested for functionality before being published in Galaxy Store. The Seller Portal Review Team analyzes the user interface, confirming that there are no issues before each watch face can be published. This review process is not related to the Watch Face Design Review that permits you to become a watch face publisher.

Resources for generating watch face images

Below are links to tools for assisting with generating the required images when submitting your application. Use of these resources are optional.

  • If you used Galaxy Watch Studio, from the Run window you can view and capture images of your watch face and your watch face applied to a Galaxy Watch (images are 512 x 512 pixels). View this tutorial video on capturing images using Galaxy Watch Studio.
  • If you tested your design on a watch, you can capture a screenshot of your design using the watch. (images are 360 x 360 pixels).
  • Once you have an image of your watch face, use the Galaxy Store Asset Creator or Lifestyle Photo Asset Packs to help create additional images (requires Adobe Photoshop).

Submit your finest

The Galaxy Watch Review Team wants to see your best! Simple watch face designs may be attractive for some, but they do not showcase your design skills. Submit designs that show your ability to create unique watch faces with a comprehensive user interface.

2020-08-11-01-03.jpg Simple Watch Face Design

The watch face designs you submit should only contain your original artwork and not the components provided with Galaxy Watch Studio. Your design should include custom imported watch hands and custom component graphics.

Be unique!

There are thousands of designs available for download from Galaxy Store. How will you make your design stand out from the rest? For example, if you want to design a watch face that shows battery usage and health content, using the default components provided by Galaxy Watch Studio is not enough. Create your own icons and develop your own sophisticated style.
The following watch faces are examples of rejected designs that show battery usage and health content. These designs are not sophisticated enough to show a designer’s capabilities.

2020-08-11-01-05.jpg

Content appearance and arrangement
Are you providing enough information? Are you providing too much information? Are your components easy to read and understand in a glance? For example, the color or opacity of a background image or component may make the watch face difficult to read. Make sure your content is organized and easy to understand even basic information.

The following watch faces are examples that were rejected because the information provided in the design was not easy to read.

2020-08-11-01-06.jpg

Image quality
Another common issue with rejected applications is that the designs are low resolution or low quality. All images should be well-defined and sharp. Images generated from a Galaxy Watch screen capture or Galaxy Watch Studio (provided that embedded images used in the design are also high quality) are acceptable. The native resolution of a screen capture from a Galaxy Watch is 360 x 360 pixels. The native resolution of a screen capture from Galaxy Watch Studio is 512 x 512 pixels. Note that if you generate your image differently, just because an image matches one of these resolutions, it does not guarantee the image is high quality. A blurry image in high resolution is still a blurry image.

Overall designs or embedded images that are pixelated or blurry will be rejected. If your design purposely contains pixelated or blurry images, please provide an explanation in the comments section of the review request. The examples below show a pixelated, a blurry, and sharp a watch face image.

Pixelated, blurry, and sharp watch face images

Submitted images

A minimum of two images of your design must be submitted with your design review request. One of the images can be just a screenshot of the watch face, but the other must show how the design is displayed on a watch. For example, if the following image is submitted, the Galaxy Watch Review Team would not know what the design would look like on an actual watch. Would the watch face be centered inside the image, would the entire image fill the watch face, or would the image need to be cropped?

Application rejection

The following are common reasons why your application may be rejected:

  • Design includes copyright protected content without license or official documentation showing permission to use.
  • Watch face design is too simple, not unique, not creative.
  • Poor appearance or design execution of watch face.
  • Watch face images are low quality.
  • Required watch face images are not included.

If your application is rejected, we encourage you to apply again during the next open window.

Get ready to submit!

The Galaxy Watch Review Team is always looking for talented and unique watch face designers to sell their apps in Galaxy Store. Do your research on watch faces and take your time to design the strongest, most unique watch faces you can. Once you have an extremely strong portfolio and have completed all of the application requirements, submit your application during the next open window. We’d love to see you in Galaxy Store!

Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 foldables next week during an event that’s scheduled to take place earlier than usual. A week before the Galaxy Z Fold 5 event, Samsung boss TM Roh teases upcoming innovations for the two foldables that sound impressive. Too bad Samsung is coming in second in a race it invented. It feels like Samsung is just reacting to the market rather than leading it.
There’s more competition in the space than in previous years, with Google having just launched its first-gen Pixel Fold handset. Separately, Android vendors from China are selling foldables in international markets. And Honor has just unveiled an incredible Magic V2 device that’s about as thick as the iPhone 14 Pro when folded.
TM Roh penned a blog post where he teased some of the innovations Samsung will bring to the foldable market with the 2023 models. The new handsets will be thinner and lighter than before, Roh said:
“Essential” design, by the way, “prioritizes clarity of purpose and ease of daily use.”
Image source: Christian de Looper for BGR We wouldn’t have a foldable market without Samsung pushing the limits of technology. There’s no question about it. The failed launch of the original Galaxy Fold is a testament to that. The tech and design were almost ready, but not quite. Samsung had to fix several glaring design and durability issues and postponed the launch. Samsung never gave up on that first-gen device.
Since then, Samsung has iterated on the previous Galaxy Z Fold model, delivering improvements with each generation.
But Samsung never dared to be the first to offer buyers a better aspect ratio for the external display that makes the handset more usable. It also stuck with the bulky Fold design and its hinge gap. And it made minimal progress with the Flip’s external display size rather than utilizing the available space.
Foldables from Oppo, Honor, and Google offered these innovations before Samsung could. These companies took the risks that Samsung was too afraid or lazy to pursue in previous years.
Or it might just be that Roh prioritized cost efficiencies over any sort of “essential” designs while it could. After all, Samsung had nothing to worry about until this year. There were no real alternatives to Fold and Flip phones outside of China.
Then again, following competitors while pretending you’re leading is what Samsung has been doing in the mobile space since the first iPhone arrived. To this day, Samsung is happier following Apple’s lead than setting standards with its Galaxy devices. If only Apple made foldable iPhones…

To enjoy their favorite content to the fullest, more and more consumers are seeking to purchase larger TVs for their homes. According to market research firm Omdia, the global market size of 85-inch screens has grown drastically from 180,000 units sold in 2019 to 1.87 million units sold in 2022. Likewise, for 98-inch screens, the global market has increased from less than 1,000 units sold in 2019 to about 160,000 units sold in 2022.

To discuss the shifting market trends towards ultra-large TVs, Samsung Newsroom sat down with Heejin Chae, TV Product Planning, Samsung Electronics, and Sangyeob Kim, Samsung Store, and learned more about how Samsung Electronics is providing revamped viewing experiences through ultra-large TVs.

▲ People in charge of product planning, sales and design talk about ultra-large 98-inch TVs

Bigger, Better Viewing Experiences With Wider TVs
With its breathtaking size able to display exceptional detail on a grander scale, the 98-inch TV has become the new standard for ultra-large TVs. In line with such trends, Samsung unveiled the 2023 98-inch Neo QLED 8K at CES 2023, offering consumers bright colors and extremely vivid details on a brilliantly large screen. As standard TV sizes have grown larger over the years, Samsung adapted to industry trends and consumer demands by developing ultra-large TVs for better viewing experiences.

“About ten years ago, a 60-inch TV was considered a large TV. But as time went by, 65-inch TVs became mainstream, and now 75-inch and 85-inch TVs have become popular, demonstrating consumers’ growing demand for larger TVs,” said Chae. “In fact, our customer survey showed that 75% of consumers bought, on average, a TV 13 inches bigger than their previously purchased TV model.”

▲ Heejin Chae explains how evolving consumer demands have shaped Samsung’s product offerings.

Additionally, with the popularity of streaming services, consumers are increasingly purchasing ultra-large TVs to enhance their at-home viewing experiences. “An astronomical number of people have started using streaming services since the pandemic as they increasingly consumed content like movies and sports,” said Chae. “As a result, the demand for ultra-large TVs has risen, as they give a more immersive viewing experience.”

Younger generations also seem to prefer larger screens, furthering the popularity of ultra-large TVs. While people in their 40s and 50s made up more than half of the consumer base who purchased TVs over 80 inches in 2015, those in their 30s and 40s have led sales in the ultra-large TV market since 2021.

As these factors and preferences become more prevalent among users, the ultra-large TV market will continue to grow. “The ultra-large TV is an inevitable trend, and consumers are ready to enjoy extremely large TVs,” Chae said.

      Comfortable Viewing at Further Distances
One of the biggest concerns when buying an ultra-large TV is the viewing distance — how far away the viewer is from the TV and whether that space is available at home. “As the viewing distance of the 98-inch NEO QLED TV has been shortened compared to previous ultra-large TVs, viewers can comfortably watch from as close as 4 meters away,“ said Kim.

▲ Sangyeob Kim discusses how the viewing distance of a TV affects the viewing experience.

“We created a space in the store with a sofa to simulate the viewing distance at home. We move the sofa to help customers gauge the viewing distance for smaller and larger rooms. Once the customers get a feel of how the TV would fit in their homes, they tend to prefer the larger models,” Kim added.

While some may have concerns about the large size of the TV, Kim explained that many consumers wish they had bought a larger size after opting for a smaller screen. “I’ve had customers call me after they had their TVs installed, asking if they can return their purchase for a larger one. That really puts me on the spot,” Kim stated. “Some even said they received the wrong TV size, claiming their TV seemed too small.”

When asked about delivery and installation, Kim explained that Samsung has worked diligently to ensure customers can receive their products easily in the comfort of their homes. “98 inches is the largest TV size that a standard Korean apartment elevator can accommodate. And when the elevator is too small, we offer other optimized delivery and installation services based on the customer’s environment,” Kim explained. “In fact, we even once successfully installed a TV after climbing a spiral ladder at a two-story house.”

“We thoroughly communicate with our customers and closely look at various factors in advance, such as whether it is possible to place the ultra-large TV on a table or wall mount it,” Kim added.

From Viewing to Experience: Changing the Living Room Culture
As TVs at home provide diverse content such as games, sports, movies and fitness content, the role TVs play has changed. As immersion is a top priority for many consumers, the popularity of large TVs is likely to continue as many consumers seek TVs that provide breathtaking experiences for all types of content.

▲ (From left) Heejin Chae, TV Product Planning, Samsung Electronics, and Sangyeob Kim, Samsung Store

“Hands-on experience is necessary to show people how great a large TV is,” said Kim. “As a TV is usually the main design focal point in a room, I recommend experiencing it in person.”

“When my acquaintances ask for advice about what TV to purchase, I first ask them what kind of activities they would do with their TV,” said Chae. “A larger display gives a more immersive experience. If users continue to utilize TVs for multiple purposes — including video calls, home training, gaming, etc. — ultra-large TVs will continue to be popular.”

“TVs help shape the living room culture, so purchasing a new set is like an investment for the next 10 years. We will continue to focus on these aspects as we plan for future TV products. I believe Samsung TVs will continue to be at the center of home entertainment,” Chae stated.

Samsung has announced it is creating a cloud gaming service which would compete with Google Stadia, Nvidia GeForce NOW, and Xbox Game Pass.
In the last few years, cloud gaming has gone from a pipedream to a crowded market, with competitors like Amazon, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Sony all competing for the attention of gamers everywhere. Even Nintendo, often intentionally trailing behind in new technologies, has allowed a few cloud-powered titles onto the Nintendo Switch, including Control and Kingdom Hearts.
The latest competitor in the cloud gaming space is Samsung, via The Verge, as announced during the company’s developer conference. Specifically, Samsung is launching a “Cloud Game Platform” which aims to leverage Samsung’s Tizen platform for smart TVs to offer a “seamless, immersive gaming experience.”
Very little else was shared during the developer conference in way of details about the platform, such as what controller players would be able to use, when Samsung’s Cloud Game Platform would launch, or how much it would cost. In a separate interview, Samsung’s Ju-Hyun Choi said that the goal of the service is “allowing users to play the latest games on their Samsung Smart TV.” From this, it seems clear there aren’t any immediate plans to bring this service to Samsung’s phones or other devices.
One thing that stands out in the interview is how Samsung intends to develop this cloud streaming service. Samsung says they are “working closely with [their] current service partners,” which could suggest that rather than develop their own streaming technology, Samsung may simply use a partner company’s streaming offering.
As The Verge points out, the last time Samsung tried to offer a cloud gaming service, in 2012, they worked with Gaikai to create a streaming app for their high-end TVs. Now, nearly ten years later, Stadia is one of the bigger players in the game streaming market, and Google has begun to offer Stadia’s streaming tech to companies like AT&T.
While it’s far too early to say with any certainty, there’s a distinct possibility that Samsung’s new Cloud Game Platform could be powered by Stadia, but that’s purely speculation at this point. We’ll simply need to wait for the company to share more details, perhaps over the coming months.
