At the conference, Samsung showcased the updates to its software, services and more, aiming to improve the overall user experience. To learn more about some of the ideas behind these developments, Samsung Newsroom sat down with four SDC22 speakers to hear more. As people become increasingly more health-focused, tech industry realized the value in pursuing projects that help individuals monitor their health and fitness. Principal Engineer Jinwoo Song from Samsung Research’s Data Research Team explained how Samsung Health Stack project helps developers and engineers optimize app development and more. Q1. What does Samsung Health Stack do and what benefits does it ultimately provide? Samsung Health Stack is an open source project that provides help in conducting research related to digital health using wearable devices, developing applications needed and creating tools for backend server and analysis in Android and Wear OS environment. By utilizing Samsung Health Stack, IT developers and engineers can save time and cost needed for developing the right environment, and researchers can focus more on conducting research studies that utilize new digital data. I believe that such convenience for development will be a great foundation for various forms of digital health care research and new data-based technologies. Q2. What was the focus of the open source when designing Samsung Health Stack? We designed it by analyzing the user experience of everyone involved in healthcare research so that the solution can accommodate the entire process of recruiting participants, collecting data and analyzing data. When there were some difficulties during the course of the development, we found solutions through health care-related cooperation with many research institutions. In addition, we made effort to provide the structure that can continue to be scaled up to handle new forms of data and devices that become the interest of digital health researchers. In particular, we’ve designed the structure so that only certain necessary parts can be selected and expanded for use in order to enable application in various cases that go beyond clinical research, such as the area of care, etc. Q3. What do you think the direction of development will be going forward for data-based health-care technologies? Due to the technological advancement including AI, and the transition to aging society, the digital technology that centers on consumers and data is becoming more important in the field of health care. In order to respond to such changes, it is important to have the capability to safely manage and precisely analyze various data on users. We believe that a world in which everyone will be able to receive customized, optimal health care solutions with data on users’ everyday life will come in the future. We’ll continue to make effort to develop technologies and products to make this possible, and we look forward to seeing many developers participate in this effort. In order to create the best product experience, Samsung’s One UI platform offers a simple and intuitive interface across all of its devices, putting the user at the center of its unified device experience. Content Strategist Josh Ross from Samsung’s Core UX Group of MX Business shared the inspiration behind One UI and how it was created with users in mind. Q1. What is One UI and what experiences does it provide to users? One UI is the unified platform for Samsung Galaxy products, from phones and tablets to watches and Galaxy Books. It creates a single, seamless experience that empowers users to get the most from their Samsung products. Q2. To create an intuitive and easy-to-use interface for users, One UI adheres to four key principles: simplicity, effortlessness, consistency and authenticity. Can you explain why these principles are important for development of One UI and how you think this enhances the mobile experience for users? You need principles so you can be sure your design is heading in the right direction. We’ve chosen these four principles because they put the focus on the user, which is what we always want to do. Simplicity helps users focus on what matters. Effortlessness means that you don’t have to struggle to get things done. Consistency means that things work the way you expect them to, which helps to make things effortless. And authenticity is about creating experiences that feel natural, like a part of your own self-expression. When these principles come together, the result can be very powerful but also subtle. You don’t always notice all the work that goes into the design, and that’s actually good. The best design is almost invisible. Q3. Why are partnerships an essential part of One UI? What are the benefits of partnerships for One UI development? Partnerships are a huge part of the One UI experience. As good as Samsung is, we need the insight and expertise of others to deliver the best experience to users. Partnerships make apps like SmartThings and Samsung Wallet possible, so that you can do amazing things like control your car or your lights, make payments, board an airplane and so much more, right from inside One UI. Partnerships enrich our Samsung Health content with fitness expertise about everything from sleep coaching to body composition to mindfulness. Partnerships add flavor to your chats with GIFs from Giphy and Tenor, stickers, fun camera features on Snapchat and much more. Partnerships like the Global Goals app, a collaboration between Samsung and the UN, help bring awareness to important causes. We want to empower our users to do things the way they want, with the apps and services they love. Partnerships are a huge part of that. Q4. Going forward, what are some things users can expect from Samsung’s One UI? We have a lot of things we’re announcing at SDC this year, so I don’t want to give everything away, but you can always expect further refinement and improvement. We look at everything from icons and animations to how you organize and find things and so much more. We’re learning more and more from our users about how the foldable experience changes things, so keep looking for exciting developments in the area of unique features for the Galaxy Flip and Galaxy Fold. Samsung has also partnered with HealthTap to provide telemedicine services through its Smart TVs. Samsung’s Tizen, an open-source operating system, helped developers optimize the service for use on Smart TVs. Sean Park, Senior Product Manager from the Experience Planning Group of Visual Display Business, explained more about accessing telemedicine through Samsung’s Smart TVs. Q1. How did Tizen help with the development of this service? Samsung Electronics’ smart operating system (OS) Tizen provided the grounds for easy navigation on the large screen display. Tizen is very quick to deploy as evidenced by what we were able to achieve in three months’ time. Q2. What are the benefits of accessing telemedicine services through Samsung Smart TVs? Everything nowadays has gone remote. We want to provide Samsung users with a more convenient way to access medical care, which is telemedicine. Samsung’s collaboration with HealthTap allows you to see a doctor through a large screen from the comfort of your home, creating a more immersive telehealth experience. If you want to access services including mental health counseling, you can do that with Samsung Smart TVs. For those who are a bit older and whose vision makes it difficult to use a small mobile screen, or for those who need to hold small children while consulting a doctor, they can easily access telehealth services through Samsung Smart TVs. We want everyone to be able to easily see a doctor from home, which we believe is not only convenient but necessary. Ultra-wideband technology (UWB) has been recently gaining more and more attention in the smart device industry. Principal Engineer Haeyoung Jun from Samsung Research’s Standards Research Team talked about the importance of standardization of UWB and how it could shape the future of the industry. Q1. What is the role of the FiRa Consortium that Samsung Electronics established in 2019 with key industry players, and what specific activities does it do? The FiRa Consortium develops the interoperability standard and certification program to enable consumers to use services powered by Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology in smart devices across devices made by different manufacturers. After the FiRa Consortium was initially established by only a few companies, including Samsung Electronics, there are now more than 115 member companies participating in defining the interoperability standard together. Furthermore, FiRa is exploring various applications that utilize UWB, and is cooperating with multiple standard organizations across various industry verticals for the standardization of these applications. Q2. We’d like to know why UWB technology is gaining attraction again recently and how it is moving forward. As many service providers and manufacturers investigate use scenarios utilizing relative location information obtained by direct communication among devices without heavy infrastructures, the barrier to implementing UWB technology and applications have been lowered. Along with Samsung Electronics, global companies are also implementing UWB into their devices. As the number of UWB enabled products increases in the market, there will be motivation to install UWB infrastructures as well. We anticipate that, if just one or two game-changing UWB applications emerge in the market, the UWB ecosystem will expand rapidly. Q3. We’d like to know what the new era of wireless communications envisioned through UWB technology standardization would look like in detail. UWB technology allows your own devices to detect the location, including distance and direction, of other UWB devices in proximity. It also enables the secure data transactions among devices as well as secure internal interfaces, therefore UWB can provide different type of location-based services that GPS is unable to. For instances, UWB brings the same effect as tagging NFC to a reader even with the smartphone placed in a pocket or bag. With the standardized UWB technology, consumers will be able to access new convenient services across multiple verticals. View the full article

  19. To put art before the eyes of consumers, Samsung partnered with The Belvedere to release globally renowned works of art including art pieces by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele in the Samsung Art Store. As consumers continue to be enthralled by both physical and digital art, this partnership expanded access to some of the world’s most notable works of art. While the adoption of technology within the art space is inevitable, widespread adoption of technology poses an important challenge: how to expand works of art digitally without taking away from the uniqueness of their physical form. For consumers, technology can break barriers and change how art is consumed. It can also provide a look into the future of art as the blending of the physical and digital art worlds occurs. Samsung Newsroom recently sat down with Wolfgang Bergmann, CFO of The Belvedere to discuss how this partnership is paving the way for continued digital growth within the art space while still preserving the culture and richness of physical art. ▲ The Belvedere by Lukas Schaller Q: Briefly tell us about your work at The Belvedere. Our mandate is to set the course for The Belvedere, which is one of the oldest museums in the world, and a showcase for contemporary art. In that task, we are faced with the challenge of preserving the past while also being forward-looking and breaking new ground, and this is what makes our job so exciting. Q: The intersection of art and technology has grown significantly in recent years, paving the way for the democratization of art, and it seems especially evident in its creation and accessibility. What is your take on this? How has this provided opportunities and/or challenges in the art world today? The Belvedere aspires to be one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the digital world, thereby reaching new audiences. Today, around half of the Belvedere collection is available online. Those interested in art can easily research the museum’s inventory and scroll through 900 years of art history, from the Middle Ages to the present day. However, I am convinced that this will only increase their desire to visit Vienna and The Belvedere in person. Q: Technology also makes art more convenient and accessible to collectors. How have you seen this play out over the years? Digital art space is getting easier to access, especially through NFT technology. However, this won’t replace classical art but rather add to it. Quite recently, we decided the time was right to undertake a unique NFT project, and a centerpiece of The Belvedere’s collection — The Kiss by Gustav Klimt — was unveiled in the new format. ▲ The Kiss (Lovers) (1908-1909) by Gustav Klimt Q: Digital art displays, such as Samsung Art Store, have allowed users to enjoy unique experiences from the comfort of their homes. How do you see this technology playing out in the coming years and what sort of impact will it have in the art industry as a whole? I think this technology definitely arouses interest in art and enhances the experience of appreciating the original piece. Owners and viewers of the digital image can form a personal connection to the original artwork. Q: What differences do you see between displaying your work in-person vs. digitally on The Frame? A screen cannot replace the aura of the original piece. At the end of the day, The Frame and the Art Store invite people to see the original in the museum. On the other hand, museum visitors who have admired an original work of art on-site will be happy to bring it digitally into their living room. Modern screens are so technically advanced that you may discover things digitally on The Frame that you could not see with the naked eye in a museum. Q: How do you envision the future of art exhibitions and museums? Art exhibitions will continue to exist online and offline. The metaverse is becoming a part of our life, but it’s not a substitute for “real” life. The physical visitor experience in a museum will therefore always remain important. ▲ In the Bower (ca. 1901) by Marie Egner Q: Can you tell us more about how this partnership came to be? Why did you choose The Frame? From your perspective, what are the benefits of Samsung Art Store? We were thrilled by the idea of bringing our collection to new formats, like Samsung Smart TVs, in order to give people access to art in their own living rooms. The Samsung Art Store provides visual variety on the screens, you can choose pictures according to the seasons or your personal mood, and you can always discover something new. Samsung leads the industry in technological innovation, so the Samsung Art Store is the right partner for us. Art pieces from the Belvedere collection on the Samsung Art Store are viewed many times a month. I am sure that the viewers are influenced by the artworks, consciously or unconsciously. ▲ Brushwood Collector in the Vienna Woods (1855) by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller Q: Some of Belvedere’s most popular works in the Art Store include In the Bower by Marie Egner, The Kiss by Gustav Klimt and Blooming Poppies by Olga Wisinger-Florian. Are these also popular for museumgoers and are there any other pieces in the collection in the Art Store that you foresee gaining more mainstream popularity? Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss is an icon piece of romantic love and a centerpiece of The Belvedere’s collection — people all over the world are smitten with it. Landscapes and nature motifs are also especially popular, both online and offline. As for increasing popularity, I see paintings by female artists from around the turn of the century, such as Broncia Koller-Pinell or Emilie Mediz-Pelikan, continuing to rise, as well as more works by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. I would recommend some autumn motifs, such as Brushwood Collector in the Vienna Woods (1855) by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller and Orange Grove on the French Riviera (1903) by Broncia Koller-Pinell. ▲ Orange Grove on the French Riviera (1903) by Broncia Koller-Pinell View the full article
  20. The Terrace — Samsung’s versatile and durable outdoor TV is featured right at the center of the Postojna Cave Park, Slovenia — the world’s most captivating cave with magnificent formations and diverse fauna. During the unforgettable visit to a fascinating subterranean paradise shaped by tiny droplets over millions of years, more than one million visitors each year will be able to closely observe, through The Terrace, the life of very unique inhabitants of the cave — the olms. Olms have triggered people’s imagination since time immemorial, and legend has it that they are actually baby dragons. They remain something of a mystery even today and are considered the largest cave-dwelling animal that can go without food for up to 10 years and live up to 100 years. The olms are now gaining greater attention after The Terrace (65-inch) were installed inside the cave. The Terrace provides visitors with an immersive experience by allowing them to closely observe the olms and their habitat. Moreover, The Terrace is the perfect TV to be placed even in the cave, where the humidity is always high and temperatures are constantly low (around 10 degrees Celsius). This outdoor TV has obtained the IP55 certification from the International Electrotechnical Commission for water and dust resistance. It can also withstand different weather conditions, even when the temperate drops as low as minus 31° to 50° Celsius (minus 24° to 122° Fahrenheit). Postojna Cave Park frequently hosts many diverse events, from gala concerts to spectacular performances by world-renowned artists. The Terrace can also be used to display other types of content. It is especially fitting, because it offers high visibility thanks to its anti-reflection technology, which reduces the reflection of light off of its surface. The AI picture quality optimization technology adjusts the screen’s brightness automatically, based on changing light conditions. The Terrace will for sure enhance the visitor’s experience of the underworld and its inhabitants. “Samsung The Terrace added to our dedication to showcase the world-renowned attraction and to preserve the olms. Our efforts were recognized by the E.U. Commission, which has placed Postojna Cave among the top finalists of the international competition Natura 2000,” said Katja Dolenc Batagelj, Managing Director of Postojna Cave. “We are pleased that Samsung can be a part of the Postojna Cave experience which is about preserving the environment and natural wonders for future generations. We hope The Terrace will allow visitors to have a vivid and immersive experience,” said Matija Savnik, the Head of Samsung Slovenia CE Sales team. View the full article

  24. Gamescom 2022, a five-day festival for over 265,000 gamers from around the world, was held in the historic city of Cologne, Germany, on August 24 through August 28. Cosplayers who dressed up as characters from popular games and movies, as well as video game enthusiasts from all over the world, gathered at Cologne Messe, where the Gamescom exhibition was held. 2022 marked a special year for Gamescom, as it was the first time in three years the event was held in person, inspiring more energy and connection from gamers than ever before. At the event, Samsung Electronics debuted the Odyssey City booth as an ode to Gamescom 2022. Through this immersive, hands-on experience showcasing the new Odyssey lineup, visitors could see for themselves the next-level performance of the advanced gaming screens. Odyssey City: Enter a New Era of Immersive Gaming — From Odyssey Ark to Gaming Hub The moment they entered the Samsung booth, visitors were faced with the next-generation gaming screen Odyssey Ark, unveiled for the first time in the European market. Visitors navigated the booth by moving from the Odyssey Ark Zone to the Experience Zone, then to the Gaming Hub Zone, and finally to the Tournament Zone to watch exciting live gaming. The audience was fascinated by the impressive size of the Odyssey Ark, measuring 55-inches, equipped with 4K picture quality and a high refresh rate of 165Hz. One visitor to the booth said he liked “the size because he is into photography and videography. Also, for gaming, it feels like a space station.” Another visitor tested the game Valorant on the Odyssey Ark and said, “it’s really good if you want to play the game while streaming, chat with Twitch on top of it and play music.” In addition to the Odyssey Ark, visitors marveled at the Odyssey G4 and the Odyssey Neo G8. One video game enthusiast reported that “the graphics are amazing” on the Odyssey Neo G8. ▲ Visitors, influencers and famous gamers who visited Gamescom experienced the immersive design of the Odyssey Ark. Another popular standout of Samsung Electronics’ booth was the Samsung Gaming Hub,1 an all-in-one game streaming discovery platform. This enables users with a Samsung TV or Odyssey lineup product that supports Samsung Gaming Hub — and a controller compatible with the gaming hub — to enjoy games with no downloads or storage space requirements. After experiencing the Samsung Gaming Hub, visitors left with the feeling that “it is convenient because you do not need a separate device such as a console or PC, and you can start the game immediately after setting up Bluetooth if you have a controller,” which is ideal for easy game preparation. ▲ Visitors at the Samsung booth experienced cloud games firsthand through Samsung Gaming Hub, using Neo QLED (QN95B), Odyssey Ark, Odyssey G7 (G70B) and Odyssey G6 (G65B). Putting Odyssey Citizens to the Test With a “This or That” Question Game and “Odyssey Lineup Quiz” To get to know the gaming styles of Gamescom goers, Samsung asked a series of questions in a game of “This or That.” The questions prompted gamers to choose the first or second option for topics including “I play on PC vs. I play on console” and “game devices matter vs. game skills matter.” The most interesting finding from the game is that many gamers tend to multitask. In other words, they like to watch a video or listen to music while playing a game. This shows multitasking is emerging as a new trend as gamers play a variety of games at once or play a game while searching online for a walkthrough. For a fun, interactive activity, Samsung engaged visitors in a quiz about the Odyssey lineup, giving prizes to those who guessed the most answers correctly. Questions included, “How many speakers and woofers are mounted on the Odyssey Ark?” Samsung knowledge pros won a prize for answering four speakers and two woofers. ▲ Gamers exploring the Odyssey City share their thoughts on the Odyssey Ark. Get in the Game: Competitive Tournaments, 5 vs. 5 Battles and Talk Shows Daily gaming tournaments were held during the exhibition in the Tournament Zone, featuring the Odyssey G4.
