Samsung Electronics today announced the global launch of the Odyssey OLED G9 gaming monitor (G95SC), which has been enhanced with next-level AI upscaling technology.1 Building on the success of last year’s Odyssey OLED G8 (G85SB), the new monitor joins the lineup to open a new era of OLED gaming. “Last year, Samsung addressed the demands and expectations of even the most experienced gamers with the launch of the Odyssey OLED G8,” said Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “With the introduction of the Odyssey OLED G9, equipped with unrivaled picture quality, we are excited to offer our customers these powerful gaming monitors and raise the bar for OLED gaming.” Measuring 49 inches in size with a 1800R curvature, the Odyssey OLED G9 is the first OLED monitor to offer Dual Quad High Definition (DQHD; 5,120 x 1,440) resolution with a 32:9 ratio. The large and wide screen ratio enable users to lose themselves in super-ultrawide vistas — equivalent to two QHD screens side by side. At the same time, its rapid 0.03ms gray-to-gray (GtG) response time and 240Hz refresh rate offer players a competitive edge. The addition of the Neo Quantum Processor Pro sets the Odyssey OLED G9 apart from other OLED gaming monitors. Using a deep learning algorithm, it intelligently analyzes images and automatically upscales to adjust brightness while amplifying contrast.   4. Since its launch in 2017, Samsung Art Store has been at the forefront of driving significant changes in the way we experience and appreciate art. With vast collections of artwork, The Frame and the Art Store offer different ways for consumers to enjoy diverse forms of artwork from the comfort of their homes. Street art — which often incorporates elements of its surroundings and nature — has been finding its place in digital media as display technology and picture quality have rapidly evolved in recent years. Through partnerships with artists like Logan Hicks, Samsung Art Store has been bridging the gap between public art and everyday consumers, bringing intricate details, expressions and impressions closer to users than ever. Samsung Newsroom had the privilege of connecting with Logan to discuss his creative process and inspiration and how his partnership with Samsung Art Store helped push the boundaries of his craft. Logan Hicks is a highly acclaimed artist based in New York, renowned for his intricate photorealistic urban landscapes. By using multiple layers of stencils, he seamlessly blends urban aesthetics with extreme precision and detail.  ▲ Logan Hicks’ artistic process (video courtesy of Logan Hicks) Inspiration and Influences: From Baltimore to California and Beyond Q: Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your career as an artist? How did you come to work with stencils? After running a successful commercial screen printing business, I decided to focus on my art and moved from Baltimore to California. I tried hand-cut stenciling and fell in love. The process is similar, but stencils are painstaking and not exact. I embraced this challenge and learned to create deep detail with multiple layers. ▲ Logan Hicks Q: What is your passion that inspires your art? Travel is both my inspiration and antidepressant. Seeing new countries, people, places and cultures has always helped keep my eyes open to how utterly fantastic the world is. After I travel, I am always excited to get back into the studio. I also find a lot of inspiration in New York City. The way the city changes throughout the day and year — it has a life of its own. During the pandemic, it was especially interesting to see a vibrant city empty. It was eerily beautiful. Q: Could you walk us through your artistic process from the photographs you start with to the final product? I don’t usually go into detail about my process just because it’s easy to confuse the process for the product. About 75% of my time making art is the laborious process of image preparation, stencil cutting, bridging the stencils, etc. To explain briefly, I take photos, break them down into various levels of contrast, cut them out, spray them on top of each other and then carefully paint the lights. My stencils aren’t the kind that you can just roll over a solid coat of paint — I slowly bring out the image with small sprays of paint that I build up. Q: What is your favorite step in your artistic process? My favorite step is creating and choosing a mood for my artwork. Will my scene be exacting or painterly? Will it depict the solitude of the evening or the vibrancy of a bright day? One set of stencils can be painted in many ways, and I like figuring out which one is best. Q: What partnerships have you worked on over the years that stand out to you? I find that the most successful partnerships are the ones that have the least direction, at least for me. Finding a company that grants freedom to do what I want is paramount for a successful collaboration. A few that come to mind are the Bowery Wall I painted for the Goldman family in New York and a partnership with Porsche for their electric car at Scope Art Fair. Logan Hicks X Samsung Art Store Q: Why did you choose to partner with the Art Store? An artist only has two reasons to continue: to make art and to present the art to an audience. For me, Samsung Art Store was an outlet to showcase my art — it was a new approach to displaying my art, and for that reason, I found it interesting. Living spaces these days continue to get smaller and smaller, so I saw this as a way of sharing multiple artworks instead of hanging them on limited walls. Q: How does displaying your work on The Frame compare to other media you’ve worked with (e.g., canvas, brick/concrete walls, billboards)? Good art should be able to translate to various mediums: canvas, walls or digital. The Frame was an interesting platform just because you don’t have control over where it will be hung or what household will download what artwork — it was fun to find out which of my pieces had the most universal appeal. When you make work for a specific location (like with a mural), you have to consider the neighborhood, lighting, surface of the wall, etc. The success of a mural is based on your ability to adapt to the environment. With The Frame, though, it was a case of plucking those works off the wall and putting them into a digital space — the attention was 100% on the artwork that was created instead of the environment that it lives in. Q: How does your signature technique of blending colors through aerosol contribute to the visual appeal of your work when displayed digitally? I hope the audience can appreciate my work on multiple levels. For example, you only observe the subject matter at a distance before you start noticing the details as you get closer. Once you’re inches from it, the execution becomes clear — from the way the colors blend to the tiny dots of aerosol paint that make up the surface of the image. My work has nuances that are difficult to see on traditional digital displays. I’ve been happy with how the matte display of The Frame picks up details of the spray paint and the subtle color changes. The display offers the opportunity to experience the work from various distances as if it exists on a wall or canvas. Q: You already have experience in creating large-scale murals worldwide in places like Istanbul, Miami, Baltimore, New York, Tunisia, Paris, etc. How does the Art Store partnership expand the global reach and accessibility of your work to audiences beyond that? I easily forget that 99.9% of the world won’t have the opportunity to see my work in person. When I paint a mural, it’s usually in larger metropolitan areas and in cities where I already have some sort of connection. So, I like to extend my reach to people who may not live in the places I paint. With this approach, someone in the rural outback of Australia has access to my pieces just as someone in the heart of Manhattan does. Q: What are your top three picks you would recommend to consumers to display on The Frame? Please give us a very brief explanation of each. ▲ The Entrance, 2019 This painting is the front of Monet’s house. I visited Monet’s Garden for the first time and instantly felt like I was in a different land — flowers surrounded me like a green fog, and the smell of flowers filled the air. Standing in front of Monet’s house, I imagined what it would have been like to live there. I think about how this was what Monet saw every morning as he walked the garden and returned to his house. ▲ Giverny, 2019 This piece is also from Monet’s Garden. What I loved the most about the garden is that it’s very rare that you can stand in the same place where a masterpiece was created. I’ve grown up seeing Monet’s paintings in my art history books, on TV and in movies. But when I visited the garden, I realized that I was in the painting. I was standing where Monet once stood as he painted, and suddenly his artwork made more sense to me. Of course, he painted his garden! How can you visit heaven and not memorialize it in a painting? ▲ Axon, 2018 I have a soft spot for Paris: the culture, food, art and architecture. I love it all. This painting is a scene that you see when you walk outside the Gare De Lyon train station. I can remember when I took the photo that I used as inspiration for this piece. My friend asked me, “Why would you take a picture of the street? It’s ugly. It is the train station that is beautiful.” The wonderful thing about being a tourist is that everything is new and fresh. To me, the street was just as beautiful as the train station. That is the power of a good painting — it can enchant the most boring scenes. The Intersection of Technology and Creativity Q: As an artist known for your traditional artistic techniques, how do you navigate the intersection between traditional art forms and the digital world? Art is a language, and learning to speak it in different arenas is critical to the success of an artist. I don’t put too much thought into what is traditional and what isn’t. I just try to consider what the work will look like scaled down to the size of The Frame. I try to think about what pieces have enough complexity to remain on the screen in someone’s space for an extended period. Q: What unique opportunities does the digital art platform offer for artists like yourself? The main opportunity I see for the digital space is access to a new audience. Someone may not spend thousands on my painting, but they may download an image of it. I’d like to think that sometimes that may even translate into someone then going out and buying a physical copy of a painting. It’s also a great way to reach an audience that does not traditionally go to galleries. Art is most successful when people can see a little bit of themselves in it, regardless of whether that is a feeling, experience, thought or mood. That isn’t limited to an art museum attendee. Finding people and connecting with them through art is something that can be done on a much larger scale through a digital platform. Samsung Electronics today announced the global launch of its full 2023 Smart Monitor lineup.1 The new M8, M7 and M5 Smart Monitors (Model Name: M80C, M70C, M50C) from Samsung enable users to tailor their monitors to their unique styles and needs, as they watch, play and work. “We are raising the bar for Smart Monitors globally with our new lineup and especially our enhanced M8 model,” said Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “Within a single monitor, users can enjoy the best of entertainment and gaming, productivity, design and personalized convenience and comfort.” Elegant Designs for Every Style and Space The full lineup is comprised of nine versatile monitors to meet the needs and styles of a wide range of users. The M8, M7 and M5 Smart Monitors come in a variety of colors and sizes. The M8 and M7 models are available in 32-inches, while the M5 model is available in both 32- and 27-inches. The M8 with UHD resolution and 400nit brightness is available in Warm White, Daylight Blue, Sunset Pink and Spring Green options. The M7 with UHD resolution and 300nit brightness comes in Warm White while the M5 with Full HD resolution comes in a sleek Black or White. Introduced with a new Iconic Slim Design, the M8 and M7 models are super slim, measuring 11.39mm at the thinnest point on the monitor. By highlighting specific parts of videos — such as contrast, color and sharpness — this feature makes it easier than ever to discern content on the TV screen. To shed more light on this groundbreaking inclusive technology, Samsung Newsroom sat down with Dr. Kyungah Park and Jason (Jaeseong) Park from Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics, to discuss everything from development to clinical trials. ▲ Jason Park (Samsung Electronics) and Kyungah Park, M.D. (Samsung Medical Center) discuss their journeys in creating and clinically testing Relumino Mode Screens for All — Including People With Impaired Vision Relumino, borrowed from Latin, means “to give back the light.” The idea is to restore vision as much as possible to people with impaired vision. Earlier this year at CES, Samsung introduced Relumino Mode on select Samsung TVs. This follows the wearable device “Relumino Glass” and the smartphone image processing software “Relumino App,” each revealed at CES in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Before that, Relumino was conceived in “C-Lab(Creative Lab),” Samsung Electronics’ in-house venture program. We’re working to further enhance TV accessibility and promote inclusion,” said Jason Park, who plans products and services for the Visual Display Business. “People with low vision are still a key demographic that need better TV viewing experiences.” Innovation Rooted in the User’s Perspective To develop Relumino Mode, planners and engineers met with a number of advisors who had visual impairments to understand their wants and needs. ▲ Jason Park, Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics “There’s an early experience that really changed my perspective,” shared Jason. “When we first met an advisor for Relumino Mode, I asked him to ‘Please come here and have a seat’ to which he replied, ‘Where is here?’ That was a hard and clear wake-up call for me. I was so embarrassed.” It was then that Jason realized that they were exploring a totally new territory and would have to first understand the way their users see the world. ▲ As part of the efforts to understand customers with visual impairments, Samsung engineers used special goggles to simulate blurry vision Despite the decades of collective experience in enhancing TV picture quality, this particular project presented a unique challenge that none of the engineers had encountered before. Typically, their expertise lay in identifying even the slightest imperfections on the screen, but now they had to understand what it’s like as a user to have impaired vision. In addition to consulting advisors, the engineers utilized special goggles that simulated blurry vision, serving as a starting point for their exploration. Through a process of generating ideas, conducting trials and learning from mistakes, they eventually developed a solution that could be considered a genuinely effective viewing mode. Clinical Trials and Direct Feedback After initial research and development came trials on a larger scale. This is where Samsung Electronics decided to collaborate with Samsung Medical Center, one of South Korea’s most comprehensive medical facilities. ▲Dr. Kyungah Park, Department of Ophthalmology, Samsung Medical Center “Clinical trials targeting people without disabilities are popular and recruiting subjects for these projects is relatively easy. Some even ask to join before we ask,” said Dr. Park. “But, that was not the case for the Relumino study. The pool was much more limited as we were more strict with our requirements — we targeted people who have lower vision than WHO’s vision impairment criteria.” However, the people that Samsung contacted showed much passion for the project. “Many who joined the trials were very excited and didn’t mind traveling long distances for the study. Thanks to their support and encouragement, we were able to carry out the research,” Dr. Park added. Four 55-inch Samsung QLED TVs were featured in the tests. One displayed the control image with no picture enhancements at all. The other three TVs showed the same content with Relumino Mode on high, medium and low. The TVs were installed on a meter away from each other onw a wall in a room with a specified amount of light. The test was two-fold, with objective and subjective evaluations. A certified contrast sensitivity test was employed for the objective evaluation. For the subjective evaluations, participants were asked to examine a set of eight still images and two videos on each of the screens. Their satisfaction levels were measured on a scale of 0 to 10. Based on the results, researchers carried out additional interviews adjusting picture enhancement levels on the spot. ▲ A blurry vision goggle simulation of what Relumino Mode may look like to people with visual impairment Relumino mode was well received by the group. One of the participants highly praised the technology, saying “I was thrilled to see the ball in a soccer match on screen. It can get frustrating if you can’t see the ball because of low vision, as you can imagine. Relumino Mode helped me see the ball clearly.” “The subjects’ responses indicated the Mode’s subjective results while the contrast sensitivity testing showed its objective results. Both of these factors, combined, allowed us to find the optimal setting for a brilliant image on TV,” said Jason. Screens for All, Today and Tomorrow “While [the Relumino Mode] project focused on people with relatively severe visual impairment many people with slightly lighter symptoms still need help. I’d like to work on developing projects for them,” explained Dr. Park. Samsung Newsroom previously explored the main drivers of this trend, with a focus on the 2023 98-inch Neo QLED 8K. In this piece, we move on to discuss the intricate design process that helped showcase the behemoth of a screen in a sleek, elegant form factor as well as the details considered to push the immersive viewing (and listening) experience to the frontier. ▲ Video describing the 98-inch ultra-large TV design philosophy of Elimination Pursuing Simplicity with a Purpose ▲ TV designer Jangho Kim described the 98-inch ultra-large TV design as “a process of focusing solely on the immersive experience and eliminating everything else” The essence of the TV experience is defined by both what you see and what you hear. Samsung Electronics has long focused on creating a “TV without a bezel” to provide a seamless experience that eliminates unnecessary distractions, Samsung adheres to the idea of “simple, yet meaningful.” A few years ago, this journey came to the point of minimizing the company logo in the front; this year, the 19.9 mm bezel-less design of the 98-inch Neo QLED pushed the envelope to represent the culmination of Samsung’s design philosophy. “We focus on the core activities of the TV experience — which is watching and listening to content — and deliver value by leaving only the beauty of simplicity,” said Jangho Kim, who helped design the TV. ‘Design’ Paving the Way for Even-Larger TVs As screens get larger, users have higher expectations for a new viewing experience. The current embodiment of Samsung’s TV design philosophy can be summarized as “One Plate Design,” to provide a perfectly immersive environment while eliminating potential concerns about the 98-inch size. “We created the ‘One Plate Design’ by adopting a basic, simple design language so that TVs don’t seem intrusive to space. Being completely flat, you can hang the TV flush against the wall,” said Kim. “The TV is physically slim, but with a purpose: it all adds up to provide a truly immersive experience.” ▲ With a minimalist approach, the “One Plate Design” (QN100B, in this case) gives the impression of a single plate floating in the air (left) with a simple, barely noticeable stand supporting it (right) The stand also heeds the minimalistic design philosophy, providing a sturdy foundation that does not obstruct the user’s view. Made up of two sheets of metal, the compact stand evokes a clean design while holding the ultra-wide screen steady — it doesn’t need to visually boast its 98-inch-screen-bearing prowess. “We made great efforts to find the optimal structure and ratio that can firmly balance a 98-inch TV without shaking or falling over,” said Kim. “The stand was developed with a simple but sleek and stylish design that can naturally blend in with the TV.” The creation of this new, innovative product is the result of many talented minds from different departments coming together. Kim expressed how the expertise of various engineers, including those from the circuit, mechanics and materials departments, helped tremendously in realizing the slim, sleek and simple design statement. Incredible Detail on a Larger Scale As the design language for TVs — like many other electronic devices — has become simpler, some jokingly say that there’s not much left to design. But Kim smiles and says, “that’s why the details become increasingly important.” For example, the 2023 98-inch Neo QLED’s Slim One Connect box was newly designed to blend in even more seamlessly to the users’ environment. The One Connect box helps users simplify their viewing field by allowing them to connect power and various input sources (e.g., cable box, gaming console, LAN cable) through a dedicated device. Compared to previous models, which required a separate space to place the device, the new Neo QLED 8K’s Slim One Connect box can be easily latched onto the back of the TV or on the stand. To continue enhancing its customer experience, the company will install Kiosks at more than 100 additional stores by the end of the year. French company LAPEYRE, which manufactures and sells equipment for home kitchens, bathrooms, doors, and windows, has installed Samsung Kiosks operating on Windows OS throughout its stores. As a growing franchise with 126 locations in France and 25 new stores set to open across the country by 2025, the company has partnered with Samsung to digitalize services to boost business and attract new customers. The rollout includes 100 Kiosks to display queue status, 70 Kiosks to support fast self-ordering, and 300 Kiosks for consumers to browse the company’s product catalog and customize their product using configurators on the kiosks, generating more sales and enhancing the customer experience.   12. To enjoy their favorite content to the fullest, more and more consumers are seeking to purchase larger TVs for their homes. According to market research firm Omdia, the global market size of 85-inch screens has grown drastically from 180,000 units sold in 2019 to 1.87 million units sold in 2022. Likewise, for 98-inch screens, the global market has increased from less than 1,000 units sold in 2019 to about 160,000 units sold in 2022. To discuss the shifting market trends towards ultra-large TVs, Samsung Newsroom sat down with Heejin Chae, TV Product Planning, Samsung Electronics, and Sangyeob Kim, Samsung Store, and learned more about how Samsung Electronics is providing revamped viewing experiences through ultra-large TVs. ▲ People in charge of product planning, sales and design talk about ultra-large 98-inch TVs Bigger, Better Viewing Experiences With Wider TVs With its breathtaking size able to display exceptional detail on a grander scale, the 98-inch TV has become the new standard for ultra-large TVs. In line with such trends, Samsung unveiled the 2023 98-inch Neo QLED 8K at CES 2023, offering consumers bright colors and extremely vivid details on a brilliantly large screen. As standard TV sizes have grown larger over the years, Samsung adapted to industry trends and consumer demands by developing ultra-large TVs for better viewing experiences. “About ten years ago, a 60-inch TV was considered a large TV. But as time went by, 65-inch TVs became mainstream, and now 75-inch and 85-inch TVs have become popular, demonstrating consumers’ growing demand for larger TVs,” said Chae. “In fact, our customer survey showed that 75% of consumers bought, on average, a TV 13 inches bigger than their previously purchased TV model.” ▲ Heejin Chae explains how evolving consumer demands have shaped Samsung’s product offerings. Additionally, with the popularity of streaming services, consumers are increasingly purchasing ultra-large TVs to enhance their at-home viewing experiences. “An astronomical number of people have started using streaming services since the pandemic as they increasingly consumed content like movies and sports,” said Chae. “As a result, the demand for ultra-large TVs has risen, as they give a more immersive viewing experience.” Younger generations also seem to prefer larger screens, furthering the popularity of ultra-large TVs. While people in their 40s and 50s made up more than half of the consumer base who purchased TVs over 80 inches in 2015, those in their 30s and 40s have led sales in the ultra-large TV market since 2021. As these factors and preferences become more prevalent among users, the ultra-large TV market will continue to grow. “The ultra-large TV is an inevitable trend, and consumers are ready to enjoy extremely large TVs,” Chae said. Comfortable Viewing at Further Distances One of the biggest concerns when buying an ultra-large TV is the viewing distance — how far away the viewer is from the TV and whether that space is available at home. “As the viewing distance of the 98-inch NEO QLED TV has been shortened compared to previous ultra-large TVs, viewers can comfortably watch from as close as 4 meters away,“ said Kim. ▲ Sangyeob Kim discusses how the viewing distance of a TV affects the viewing experience. “We created a space in the store with a sofa to simulate the viewing distance at home. We move the sofa to help customers gauge the viewing distance for smaller and larger rooms. Once the customers get a feel of how the TV would fit in their homes, they tend to prefer the larger models,” Kim added. While some may have concerns about the large size of the TV, Kim explained that many consumers wish they had bought a larger size after opting for a smaller screen. “I’ve had customers call me after they had their TVs installed, asking if they can return their purchase for a larger one. That really puts me on the spot,” Kim stated. “Some even said they received the wrong TV size, claiming their TV seemed too small.” When asked about delivery and installation, Kim explained that Samsung has worked diligently to ensure customers can receive their products easily in the comfort of their homes. “98 inches is the largest TV size that a standard Korean apartment elevator can accommodate. And when the elevator is too small, we offer other optimized delivery and installation services based on the customer’s environment,” Kim explained. “In fact, we even once successfully installed a TV after climbing a spiral ladder at a two-story house.” “We thoroughly communicate with our customers and closely look at various factors in advance, such as whether it is possible to place the ultra-large TV on a table or wall mount it,” Kim added. From Viewing to Experience: Changing the Living Room Culture As TVs at home provide diverse content such as games, sports, movies and fitness content, the role TVs play has changed. What direction do you see this trend taking and how do you think it will impact the art industry? The Samsung Art Store is an innovative platform that offers users a unique way to enjoy and access works of art from the comfort of their own homes. By providing a platform to view images of artwork, paintings, photography and more, the Art Store has made it easier for collectors to own and appreciate art. Q: What differences do you see between showcasing the artwork in-person vs. digitally on the Frame? That is a great question. First, I think it’s important to note that we are talking about displaying images of artwork, not the artworks themselves. The way in which the viewer experiences the artwork will depend on whether it can evoke the same emotions as the original piece. While digital displays cannot replace the experience of seeing a Velázquez painting in person, it does offer the convenience of accessing and displaying high-quality images of these artworks in our own homes. Furthermore, being able to integrate digital artwork into our living spaces, just as we do with furniture or decorative objects, adds a new dimension to the way we experience and appreciate art. It offers new possibilities for enjoying and sharing art in our everyday lives and this is a great thing. Q: Have you observed any noteworthy trends or patterns in the way people engage with the museum’s online collections? It is fascinating to see how the public responds to the images displayed in the Art Store. The audience seems to be drawn towards decorative aesthetic and current trends influenced by other media, mirroring the purchasing patterns observed in our museum shops. Q: Can you share with us some of the most memorable pieces from your collection that are currently featured in the Art Store? Here are some carefully selected works from a diverse range of works from various painters, styles and themes spanning across different decades. These pieces showcase a range of subjects, from powerful portraits and mythological dances to exquisite details of flower catalogues, offering a glimpse into the beauty and richness of art history. ▲ Las Meninas (1656) by Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (cropped for detail) Las Meninas is undoubtedly the best-known painting in the Museo del Prado and Velázquez’s most famous work. It is also the one which best sums up the characteristics of his art. In a large room of the Alcázar in Madrid, we see the Infanta Margarita, whose detail we can see in this image, flanked by two maids of honor or meninas. The picture has been interpreted in several ways. The centrality of the infanta Margarita and the reflection of the king and queen in the mirror appear to point to a political and dynastic significance. The presence of Velázquez in the same environment as the king, queen and infanta, and bearing the cross of the Order of Santiago and the chamberlain’s key as attributes of his social status, presumably constitutes a validation of his nobility and that of painting itself. ▲ The Garden of Earthly Delights Triptych (1490-1500) by Hieronymus Bosch The Central panel, with the four rivers of the world on the horizon, situates the scene on Earth. Carnal desire, represented by beautiful naked women and symbolized by an array of red fruit, becomes mankind’s driving force. The various earthly pleasures to which mankind yields instinctively and unconsciously are illustrated symbolically or specifically. The central panel depicts a Paradise that deceives the senses, a false Paradise given over to the sin of lust. ▲ Dance of Mythological Characters and Villagers (1630-1635) by Pieter Paul Rubens A group of peasants dance in agitated frenzy, accompanied by a flutist in a tree. The scene takes place in a landscape that recalls Italy, especially the villa in the background, whose shapes resemble those of the architect, Andrea Palladio. ▲ Hollyhocks (1872-1873) by Mariano Fortuny y Marsal (cropped for detail) Fortuny enjoyed painting flowers in bloom in his scenes. Attracted by their colors, he also made separate studies of them. His favorites were hollyhocks on account of their pleasing hues and the elegant verticality of their stalks, which is accentuated by the format used here. As the background is devoid of references, their corollas appear to float in an indeterminate space, with varying degrees of finish, and the ground layer is visible in some areas of the canvas. Exploring the Intersection of Art and Technology Q: What impact do you think recent technological advancements have had on artists, their creative process and the finished artwork? From my perspective, artists have been introduced to a whole universe of new technological tools, which may influence their creative process to varying degrees, depending on their individual preferences. There are some exceptional artists who have embraced digital tools to create amazing works. In my view, these advancements offer endless opportunities for artists, whether through new artwork or collaborations or both. Q: How can technology be used to make art more accessible and inclusive to a wider audience? Undoubtedly, digital technology has the potential to greatly expand the reach of art beyond physical spaces, allowing it to be appreciated in different languages and contexts.   15. In 2022, Samsung Electronics announced its environmental strategy to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. As part of these sustainability efforts, Samsung has expanded the use of recycled materials in plastic parts for its products. By 2030, Samsung aims to incorporate 50% recycled materials into its plastic parts and by 2050, aims to use 100% recycled materials for all of its plastic parts. Samsung’s SolarCell Remote exemplifies Samsung’s commitment to the environment, and as it celebrates its third anniversary, Samsung Newsroom is exploring how this eco-conscious product has progressed since its initial release in 2021, with perspectives from JongKeun Lee of H/W Platform Lab and HyunJoo Kim of Mecha Solution Lab. ▲ (From left) JongKeun Lee from H/W Platform Lab and HyunJoo Kim from Mecha Solution Lab Eliminating the Need for Disposable Batteries Samsung Electronics developed the SolarCell Remote to combat the environmental impact of discarding used batteries. It is the industry’s first rechargeable remote control, with a solar panel (solar cell) that can be charged by sunlight or indoor lighting. The remote can also be charged with a USB-C cable so consumers have many ways to charge their remote. “The level of carbon emissions from the SolarCell Remote, from production to disposal, is roughly one-third of that of the manufacturing of disposable batteries1,” said JongKeun Lee from H/W Platform Lab. “By eliminating the need for disposable batteries, not only are fewer resources consumed but carbon emissions are lowered by manufacturing fewer batteries over time.” Another remarkable feature is its low power consumption. The SolarCell Remote was designed to run on about 10% of the power that typical remote controls use. “Samsung made significant progress by drastically eliminating unnecessary outputs and operations, contributing to great energy savings,” Lee added. The SolarCell Remote Recycles More Than Six Tonnes of Waste Twenty-four percent of the plastics used in the SolarCell Remote come from recycled materials. This means more than six tonnes of waste are recycled for the annual production of 10 million SolarCell Remotes. This equates to about an 18% decrease in carbon emissions compared to production using conventional materials. This was no simple undertaking. It takes time and effort to develop and apply alternative materials made from recycled waste in a meaningful way. “With growing concerns about ocean waste, we looked carefully into many solutions. We chose to use recycled plastics from discarded fishing nets for 20% of brackets of the 2023 SolarCell Remote,” said HyunJoo Kim from Mecha Solution Lab. “Going forward, we aim to foster the use of these resources and utilize recycled plastics more aggressively.” “This year, we started using recycled plastics from discarded fishing nets. While they are costly and difficult to process, the end result is a higher quality of materials which contribute to our mission of everyday sustainability,” Kim added. “The process is quite extensive, from sorting out the waste to cleaning, removing toxic substances and improving material properties.” In recognition of this product’s environmentally friendly design, Time Magazine selected the SolarCell Remote as one of Time Magazine’s “The Best Inventions of 2022”. All of Samsung’s 2023 Lifestyle TVs are equipped with the 2023 SolarCell Remote. Samsung’s goal is to integrate more eco-conscious products and processes into a wider range of models across regions and empower consumers to live a more sustainable lifestyle. In addition, Samsung decreased the size of the SolarCell Remote by 25% in its latest iteration. This means that the remote control uses less plastic while enhancing the product’s usability. “As the SolarCell Remote became smaller, manufacturing uses less plastic and it became an ideal size for consumers’ hands, making it a better product all around,” Lee explained. Pursuing an Eco-Conscious Strategy With a Streamlined Approach So, what are Samsung’s next steps to enhance sustainability of the SolarCell Remote? “We are continuing to move in the direction of light, thin and small to keep the use of plastic low,” Kim said. “We are dedicated to creating a user-friendly remote control that consumes fewer resources and less energy,” Lee said. “Samsung’s ultimate goal is to empower users to control products with minimal effort while reducing the use of materials and energy. This could mean one day we get rid of the remote control entirely.   17. Samsung Electronics announced today that six models in its 2023 Neo QLED lineup have achieved the “Reducing CO2” certification from the Carbon Trust. This label is awarded to a product when its carbon footprint is proven to have been reduced year on year, a testament to Samsung’s efforts to enhance sustainability throughout the entire product lifecycle. “It’s rewarding to see Samsung’s sustainability mission recognized by a trusted organization, as we remain committed to creating products with the future of our planet top of mind,” said Seokwoo Yong, Executive Vice President and Deputy Head of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “As the world’s largest TV manufacturer, we recognize our responsibility to lead by example and will continue to leverage technology to drive positive change.” The Carbon Trust is a global climate consultancy founded by the UK government with the mission to respond to climate change and reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs). The organization calculates its carbon footprint certification by evaluating the amount of GHG generated1 throughout the entire product lifecycle, ranging from production to disposal, based on internationally recognized standards. Notably, the label does not take CO2 offsets into consideration. The 2023 Neo QLED models obtained the certification in recognition of Samsung’s efforts to reduce the products’ weight and their power consumption during the use phase when compared to their predecessors. The six certified models include three Neo QLED 8K and three Neo QLED 4K screens.2 As Samsung aims to expand the scope of these efforts, it expects to earn carbon footprint certification for more than 20 models this year across its latest lineup of QLED, Crystal UHD and OLED TVs, as well as monitors and signage products. In 2021, Samsung Neo QLED became the first screen to receive the certification among 4K and higher resolution TVs. The following year, 16 models across Samsung’s 2022 lineup, including 11 models from the QLED, Crystal UHD and Lifestyle TV range, as well as five monitors and signage products, also obtained the certification.
