  7. SDKs for Blockchain Developers At Samsung, we understand that one size does not fit all of your development needs. That’s why we offer two different SDKs to cover your blockchain development needs: Samsung Blockchain Platform (SBP) SDK and Samsung Blockchain Keystore (SBK) SDK. The SBP SDK aims to be an overall solution for your DApp’s every need, from connecting to supported hardware wallets to uploading transactions in the supported Blockchain networks. On the other hand, the SBK SDK allows you to securely access the Samsung Blockchain Keystore cold wallet and supports signing transactions of a wide range of cryptocurrencies. Samsung Blockchain Platform SDK The Samsung Blockchain Platform SDK offers a full set of functions for your Decentralized App (DApp) or Blockchain App needs. It helps you manage blockchain accounts easily and make a transaction easier by using abstracted transfer APIs. Additionally, the SBP SDK offers a UI-based cryptocurrency payment solution for even more rapid development. The Samsung Blockchain Platform SDK can easily connect your DApp to different hardware wallets for securely signing transactions. Currently, three hardware wallets are supported: Samsung Blockchain Keystore, Ledger Nano X, and Ledger Nano S. Once successfully connected to a hardware wallet, the SBP SDK offers abstracted APIs, so you never have to worry about what hardware wallet to which the user is connected. The SBP SDK also has a blockchain browser solution for your web DApp. With the SBP SDK’s Cucumber Webview, you can migrate your web-based DApp into the mobile environment with little to no changes in your web app. This can help you drastically reduce development time and resources, and to reach millions of new Galaxy devices. With the SBP SDK’s Payment Sheet UI, developing a native Android DApp has never been easier. Simply launch the desired Payment Sheet Intent and let the SDK take care of the rest of your DApp’s payment or transfer flows. The SBP SDK currently supports two major Blockchain networks: Ethereum and TRON. With the SBP SDK’s abstracted APIs for cryptocurrency and token transfers, you never have to worry about complex details. The SBP automatically estimates transaction fees and handles code for underlying smart contract function ABIs for token transfer. You can simply plug in your JSON-RPC endpoint/node to the SBP and develop your DApp faster. You can check out all of the aforementioned APIs (and more) in action, on the Aero Wallet sample application for the SBP SDK. Using Aero Wallet’s source code, you can learn how to easily build a fully functional cryptocurrency wallet application from scratch. To learn more about how the SBP SDK can greatly simplify your DApp development, check out the SDK Overview. Samsung Blockchain Keystore SDK The Samsung Blockchain Keystore, powered by the Knox Security Platform, is a built-in secure cold wallet available on a wide range of Galaxy devices. The Samsung Blockchain Keystore SDK allows your Android apps and DApps to communicate directly with this highly secure cold wallet for fetching address lists and public keys and signing cryptocurrency transactions. With the SBK SDK, your DApp can fetch the user’s blockchain address and link it to the user’s account. Using this address, you can query on the blockchain network (using a blockchain explorer or another library such as SBP) to find the user’s account balance and transaction history. Furthermore, you can use the SBK SDK to request the Keystore app to sign a cryptocurrency transaction. The Keystore app then shows the requested transaction to the user inside a Trusted User Interface (TUI), executed within the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). Once the user approves the transaction with a PIN or a biometric authentication like a fingerprint, the Keystore app signs the transaction with the associated private key and returns it to you through the SBK SDK. To learn more about how you can integrate the SBK SDK into your app, check out the SDK overview. Choosing the right SDK for your Dapp Both of the Samsung Blockchain SDKs can help make your DApp more feature-rich and cut down development time and effort. If you are still confused about which SDK is best for your DApp, check out our brief comparison below. API Samsung Blockchain Platform SDK Samsung Blockchain Keystore SDK Fetch Public Address Supported Supported Sign Transaction Supported Supported Send Transaction Supported Unsupported Send Token Transaction Supported Unsupported Built-in Payment Screen UI Supported Unsupported Seamless Integration with WebApps Supported Unsupported External Hardware Wallet Supported Unsupported Blockchain Networks Supported (at the time of writing) Ethereum and Tron Bitcoin, Ethereum, Klaytn, Stellar and Tron Services for End-Users Samsung Blockchain Apps and services aim to provide you with a secure and convenient experience in the blockchain world. Samsung currently offers two applications under its blockchain platform: the Samsung Blockchain Keystore app and the Samsung Blockchain Wallet app. You can find out more about each of these offerings from this article and from the global Samsung site. Samsung Blockchain Keystore Samsung Blockchain Keystore offers defense-grade, vault-like security for your crypto assets. The Blockchain Keystore app runs within the TEE of the Knox Platform. This allows the Samsung Blockchain Keystore to provide security unlike ever before, as the private key and information located in the Samsung Blockchain Keystore are never saved to a Samsung or an external cloud, nor is it seen by the devices’ Android OS. You can easily set up the Keystore app by importing your existing account by using a 12-word mnemonic, or create an entirely new one. Samsung Blockchain Wallet The Samsung Blockchain Wallet app allows you to conveniently send and receive major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ether. Not only does the Samsung Blockchain Wallet app support the built-in Samsung Blockchain Keystore wallet, it also supports external physical wallets such as Ledger Nano S and Nano X, using USB. Beyond sending and receiving crypto assets, you can also explore partner DApps through the Blockchain Wallet App. Partner DApps on the Samsung Blockchain Wallet app unlock the door to a wide range of experiences such as cryptocurrency exchanges, staking pools, and NFT marketplaces. Furthermore, you can stay on top of the latest trends and ongoing events in the blockchain world with the Samsung Blockchain Wallet’s News section. Conclusion Blockchain technology has the potential to revolutionize many aspects of our lives. With Samsung Blockchain SDKs and applications, you and your DApp users can always stay at the forefront of this technology. We want to continuously improve your experience in the blockchain world. Feel free to share your thoughts with us and with the global blockchain developer community on the Samsung Blockchain Developer forum. View the full blog at its source
  8. Going beyond the conventional idea of what a TV is, Samsung’s leading range of lifestyle TVs are true pieces of interior décor that allow users to express themselves in their own spaces. Whether you’re looking for a TV that can double as an art frame, a screen to display portrait as well as landscape-oriented content on, or a TV whose design speaks for itself, there’s something for everyone in the range. In order to get to know more about how users around the world are enjoying their Samsung lifestyle TVs, Samsung Newsroom reached out to a range of influencers and trailblazers within different creative industries from all over the globe to hear what exactly it is that makes a Samsung TV their choice. Take a look at some of the reasons they gave below. Adèle & Maxime, French Graphic Designers With an Interest in How Objects Work With Their Interiors “Samsung’s lifestyle TVs blend in with the décor, becoming an aesthetic element in their own right – all with simplicity and lightness.” Q: As designers and illustrators yourselves, what do you think about the design of Samsung’s lifestyle TVs? A: The design of Samsung TVs is very interesting because, once placed, they become a modern and active object in our interiors. They blend in with the decor, becoming an aesthetic element in their own right – all with simplicity and lightness. Q: Samsung has partnered with some artists on the design of their lifestyle TVs. What are your thoughts on such partnerships that blend technological innovation with artistic creativity? A: The idea of opening up the design of an everyday object to creators is something that is very important to us. Technological objects can lose their simplicity and poetry by merit of their design, but by collaborating with creative people, we can bring this issue to the forefront to resolve it. Virro & Lola, A Mexican-French Photographer and Creative Professional Duo With a Passion for Travel “Samsung’s lifestyle TVs combine art, aesthetics, interior design and entertainment, making them go far beyond the television function – which is really revolutionary.” Q: Along with your professional pursuits, you are known for your joint Instagram page where you share your favorite travel experiences. What do you think about The Serif with which you can view your own media and memories? A: We used to hate the black screen of the TV in our living room, so Ambient Mode is one of the features we love most about The Serif. It’s really cool that Samsung regularly introduces new content for Ambient Mode, but mostly, we’re keen on showcasing our own media and having it on display for ourselves and our guests. Q: Virro – as a photographer, what is it about Samsung’s lifestyle TVs that appeals to you the most? A: First of all, thanks to their QLED screens, the image quality is impressive. In addition, Samsung’s lifestyle TVs combine art, aesthetics, interior design and entertainment, making them go far beyond the television function – which is really revolutionary. Q: Lola – what is your favorite thing about The Serif? A: What I love most about The Serif is that it’s a TV that doesn’t look like one. Being passionate about interior design, I believe that The Serif is a beautiful, unique and bold addition to a living space. Kyal & Kara, Australian Renovators Who Like to Think Outside the Box “The ability to view either your own or world-renowned media on The Frame means that there are infinite ways to create a look and feel unique to each individual.” Q: How do Samsung’s lifestyle TVs factor into your daily household routines and activities? A: With two young children and an active lifestyle, we really value our relaxation time together as a family, and Samsung’s lifestyle TVs play a big part in this. On the weekends, we love our movie time together as a family, and the kids love choosing artwork from the Art Store for The Frame we have in our rumpus room – it’s a great way for them to take ownership of the space. Q: Samsung’s The Frame combines technology with aesthetic for seamless TV experiences. What are your favorite features of the TV? A: The two standout features for us are the TV’s thin, streamlined design and the customizable bezel. We’re all about creating spaces that evoke emotion as you enter the room, and the ability to view either your own or world-renowned media on the TV means that there are infinite ways to create a look and feel unique to each individual. Q: What tips would you provide to users looking to match their Samsung lifestyle TV to their interior? A: We have three key tips. Tip 1: function first – work out how you’d like your TV to be displayed. The Serif is a great option for angular spaces where wall mounting or units are not an option. Tip 2: find your inspiration. From color palettes to other décor pieces, be sure to know what’s important in your space. Finally, tip 3: create a style unique to you. Ask yourself what vibe you’re looking for with your space. For example, if you prefer minimal interior styling, The Frame with a white bezel would be the perfect choice. Lotte Meister, an American Interior Decorator and Stager Who Loves When Function Meets Style “The Serif feels both retro and modern at the same time and doesn’t take up too much visual space the way a TV on a console table might.” Q: Samsung’s lifestyle TVs are developed to be able to fit into any interior space and aesthetic. What are your thoughts on the design of The Serif? What do you like most about it? A: The Serif’s clean lines and cool vibe make it a decorative element in its own right. What’s more, the sloped ceilings of our bedroom did not permit a flat screen to be hung on the wall, yet we wanted to be able to watch TV in bed. The Serif was the perfect solution. It feels both retro and modern at the same time and doesn’t take up too much visual space the way a TV on a console table might. The hidden wiring is also genius – the decorator and stager in me loves the look! Q: What about The Frame? What do you like most about it? A: We have 3 homes across New York state, each with completely different aesthetics. We have a Frame TV in each of these homes, and it looks great in each location. I love it because it looks like another piece of art and doesn’t scream “Look at me, I’m a TV!”. The choice of finishes available for The Frame make it work in every style of home. Jin-woong Son, a Korean Furniture Designer With a Passion for the Harmony of the Interior “The Frame’s bezel is so refined that the joints fit perfectly when you switch out your bezel – like puzzle piece slotting into place.” Q: As a professional furniture designer, do you have any special criteria in mind when choosing a TV? A: I would never choose a product that doesn’t harmonize with the space it is to be placed in, which is why I currently use The Frame, as I like how it can be used as an actual art frame when the screen is turned off. On top of that, you can easily change The Frame’s bezel color to match your changing interior any time you want, something that you can’t do with most electronics. Furthermore, the bezel’s joints are designed at a 45° angle, and as a furniture designer, this strikes me as amazingly sophisticated. The bezel is so refined that the joints fit perfectly when you switch out your bezel – like puzzle pieces slotting into place. Q: These days, the demand for lifestyle TVs that are able to merge seamlessly into a user’s space is on the rise. What are your thoughts on this trend? A: In the past, the TV used to play the role of gathering family members all together in the living space while also providing entertainment. These days, however, the role of TVs has become much more about providing multifaceted entertainment experiences, as well as serving as statement furniture pieces. For those living in a small space, The Serif makes the perfect choice – as opposed to, say, a huge wall-mounted TV – as it makes use of the space it takes up by serving as a sophisticated interior décor item that stands on its own as a piece of furniture. 10. The last few decades have seen art and technology intersect at a previously unimagined rate – both for using technology to create art, and also to make art more accessible to the public. Samsung Electronics has been at the forefront of this change, and has now partnered with the Louvre to aid its mission of sharing art with as many people as possible via The Frame and the Art Store. The Louvre has a fascinating and rich history; a former royal palace, it has been a cornerstone of French history for over eight centuries. Open to the public since 1793, the Louvre’s collections are among the finest in the world, spanning several thousands of years and regions of origin from America to the borders of Asia and beyond. Divided into eight departments, it houses some of most recognizable art pieces in the world, including the Mona Lisa, the Winged Victory of Samothrace, and the Venus de Milo. Samsung Newsroom spoke with Yann Le Touher, Head of Development, Brand Licensing and Commercial Partnerships at the Louvre, to learn more about what users can expect from this exciting partnership. ▲ Pyramide et Palais du musée du Louvre (2021) by Nicolas Guiraud LFH (Louvre From Home) Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, everyday life has been flipped on its head. The arts and entertainment were among the industries hardest hit, but that didn’t stop the public’s yearning to enjoy cultural pursuits. In order to allow people to still be able to experience its collections, the Louvre sought out new and innovative method of sharing art including uploading its entire art collection online. According to Le Touher, this has been a crucial step in making sure the Louvre accomplishes its main mission of sharing art with as many people as possible. “It is important to share knowledge on as many of the artworks preserved at the Louvre as possible,” highlighted Le Touher. “We believe this online platform, which presents thousands of our artworks, is useful not only to art historians and researchers, but also art lovers.” ▲ Mona Lisa (1503-1519) by Leonardo da Vinci Samsung and the Louvre’s partnership is in line with the goal of bringing artwork closer to art fanatics around the world thanks to Samsung TVs’ pristine picture quality and lifelike images. The Frame is known for its ability to display images that look remarkably like physical prints and paintings, with the screen’s signature Quantum Dot technology making colors more vibrant and contrast sharper. “We were impressed by the features offered by The Frame and were interested in the idea of bringing art into peoples’ homes as well as making it more accessible,” noted Le Touher. As an iconic structure itself, photos of the Louvre itself are also available, bringing Parisian chic directly to you so as to bring the entire Louvre experience to your home. The Art Store provides access to an expansive range of artworks from world-renowned galleries and museums directly to your home, elevating any living space. Find Your Inspiration The Louvre has cemented itself as a place of inspiration for artists and art-enthusiasts alike. “The greatest architects, painters, sculptors, and craftsmen not only imagined and embellished the palace, but also lived, worked, and exhibited their work at the Louvre for over three hundred years,” said Le Touher. In September, the Louvre opened its latest exhibition dedicated to Greek art. This project highlights the cultural, historical and artistic links between France and Greece in the 19th century and shows how the rediscovery of Greek antiquity changed the European view of Greece. Thanks to The Frame’s ever-growing library of art some of that inspiration can now be yours too. There are 40 pieces of artwork from the Louvre and photographs of the iconic building, available on the Art Store today. ▲ Le Sacre de Napoléon (1806-1807) by Eugène Delacroix “Our selection of artworks from the Louvre include great masterpieces, such as the Liberty Leading the People, and the Grande Odalisque,” noted Le Touher. “We also want to promote lesser-known paintings that are important and meaningful in art history.” The Louvre and the Art Store partnership has, for example, added the painting Deux chiens de chasse liés à une souche (1548) by Jacopo Bassano, a monumental piece as the first animal portrait in Western painting, albeit less known than works such as the Mona Lisa. “We are proud to be part of the partners highlighted in the Art Store,” affirmed Le Touher. “Thanks to Samsung’s technology and innovation, we have the opportunity to give people the impression of having a reproduction of their favorite work at home. Obviously, this does not replace a visit to the museum but we strongly believe it can bring inspiration and joy to many homes.” View the full article
  11. Samsung Electronics today announced a new partnership with the iconic Musée du Louvre. Through this partnership, Samsung will continue to develop the Art Store on its lifestyle TV, The Frame, through an exclusive artwork partnership with the Louvre in Paris, France. With new artworks from the Louvre joining the collection, The Frame now boasts a catalog with over 1,500 works of art from 42 different countries that consumers can enjoy in 4K picture quality from museums and galleries around the world, including the Prado Museum in Madrid, the Albertina Museum in Vienna, the Tate Modern in London, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Hermitage State Museum in Saint Petersburg and LUMAS. “Ever since we launched our lifestyle TV portfolio in 2017, we have focused on developing the Art Store platform with prestigious partners. We want to offer much more than a television, inviting Art into the homes of The Frame owners everywhere. This catalog lists works by hundreds of artists, covering diverse periods, from ancient civilizations to modern art,” explained Wonjin Lee, President and Head of Service Biz Team at Samsung Electronics. “This year, we are proud to join forces with one of the most famous museums in the world, the Louvre, to enhance this collection and offer a taste of French heritage throughout the world.” Admire the Louvre’s Treasures From Your Own Home By entering into a partnership with the Louvre,1 Samsung offers all The Frame owners a chance to explore the most visited museum in the world through forty pieces of artwork and photographs. This selection includes must-see masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa and The Wedding Feast at Cana, as well as photos of the majestic Louvre galleries, its architecture and museum grounds (Louvre Pyramid, Tuileries Garden, etc.). A short description of each work gives users a glimpse into their background and history. Samsung and the Louvre also plan to unveil other exclusive content for The Frame users later this year. “The Louvre is a venue of discovery, imbued with emotion, a spectacular setting for artistic masterpieces. Admiring works from its collection every day, at home, as well as views of the building, galleries and gardens, is a wonderful way to see and understand the extraordinary beauty of this museum,” said Yann Le Touher, Head of Development, Brand Licensing and Commercial Partnerships of the Louvre. Ultra-Slim Design and Exceptional Picture Quality The Frame boasts a unique and customizable design that sets it apart from the rest. Designed to be a TV when it’s on and art when it’s off, The Frame is an innovative digital canvas that reflects an individual’s personal style. The 2021 version of the lifestyle TV offers new custom options to complement every space and style, with two frame designs: modern (available in white, teak and brown) and bevelled (available in white and brick red).2 To complete the artwork appeal, The Frame can be hung flush to the wall on an ultra-slim mount and connected to a One Connect box via a single translucent3 cable that integrates all TV connectors including the power source. Users can also set The Frame anywhere in the room on a Studio Stand.4 In addition to its gallery-ready design, The Frame provides a vibrant 4K5 QLED picture quality powered by Quantum Dot Technology that allows 100% color volume, immersing viewers in a world of rich and realistic colors. 12. By Patrick Barrett, Robert Masen, and Zach Varberg How we got here Last month, we announced the launch of SmartThings Edge! Looking back, SmartThings provided a few different ways to integrate devices onto the platform. For Hub Connected devices we have always used Device Type Handlers (DTHs). These were written in Groovy and would run in a sandboxed environment on the SmartThings Cloud. While Groovy DTHs helped us launch SmartThings, they presented special challenges for local execution on the hub. With the ongoing work to modernize the platform and move away from legacy systems, we wanted to provide a better way to handle devices. Similar to DTHs, we looked to provide a way for developers (both internal staff and partners) to define the behavior of a Hub Connected device through some combination of data and code. Given that one of our primary goals is to support the execution of these on hubs—which we see as the edge of the SmartThings platform—we decided to call these “Edge Drivers.” We set out to engineer a solution that would be able to deliver the developer and user experience that we were looking for. As you may have guessed from the title, Edge Drivers are built around Lua © as the programming language... So why Lua? Simple The Hub is a resource-limited environment. With the need for users to potentially run many Edge Drivers at a time, we were looking for something lightweight. Lua has a small set of core structures and functionality. This leads to a small footprint, which works well for executing on hubs. With the core language being pretty small, it is pretty easy for developers to learn. Additionally, as an interpreted language, developers building Edge Drivers do not need to worry about compiling their code. Embeddable It should not come as a surprise that the SmartThings hub platform software is a complex system. It is responsible for managing many aspects of how devices connect and execute within the SmartThings platform. Most of this software is written in Rust and C (stay tuned for more on this in the future!) and we needed something that would work well in this environment. When looking for solutions, we began by investigating “prior art” to answer the question: Are there other complex systems out there that needed to solve a similar problem, and if so, what did they do? We have a set of core functionality that needs to execute in a performant manner (HubCore), but want to allow extensions that give developers the tools to build unique use cases (Device Drivers). We found that Lua had been extensively used in the video game industry (along with other non-video game software) as a way to allow developers to extend existing functionality—which is exactly what we were looking for! This means that Lua could work well with C and Rust, allowing your Hub to run extensions with a minimal impact to the existing hub software. Safe Historically, all locally executing DTHs were either written or reviewed by our engineering teams. Allowing users to run code locally on their hub that we did not write, review, and test brings up complex questions about boundaries and guardrails. As a result, it was important to identify a solution that we could sandbox—that is, lock the untrusted code in a room where it cannot hurt anyone else. Lua itself provides some opportunities to tweak and limit the runtime. In addition to this, we wrap all Device Drivers in a second, more secure sandbox layer, with a coherent API to further protect hubs in instances where we did not believe the built-in options were enough. 14. Foldable technology for mobile is a groundbreaking experience not only for users but also for developers. The presence of many form factors like immersive display, app continuity, Flex mode and UX optimization challenge developers to think outside of the box to adapt to this technology. In this blog, we discuss a checklist to provide a better understanding about the adaptation, modification and design changes that are required. So, let's go through each point, one-by-one. Large screen optimization Samsung foldable devices have two different physical screens: the cover display and the main display. As the cover display is much smaller than the main display, large screen optimization is one of the key areas of designing UX for foldable devices. In a nutshell, your app can utilize the extra space in the main display by showing more information. Just having a different UI design with the same information can do the trick of optimization as well. Large screen optimization of a note app To implement this scenario, define different layout files for each display using the alternate resources option. For example, if you want to define a different UI for the main display, create a new directory named layout-sw600dp under the res directory and then create an xml file named activity_main. Then add the layout code as required. UI is designed separately for the main display and the cover display Flex mode optimization In Galaxy Z series devices, Samsung introduced a new mode called Flex mode. This mode allows users to use apps while the book-like phone is partially folded. Creative design can really make your app stand out from others in Flex mode. Google Duo app in Flex mode in Galaxy Z series devices Using Google’s new Jetpack library, WindowManager, you can detect the current posture of a Galaxy Z series device and update the UI accordingly by following these steps: Step 1: Add the dependencies in the build.gradle. implementation "androidx.window:window:1.0.0-alpha01" Step 2: Define a WindowManager instance. val windowManager = WindowManager(this, null) Step 3: Register the DeviceState change listener. The listener notices changes in the device state (for example CLOSED, OPENED, HALF_OPENED). windowManager.registerDeviceStateChangeCallback( mainThreadExecutor /* Executor */, callback /* Consumer<DeviceState> */ ) Step 4: Write a callback function to check deviceState.posture to get the current posture of the device. If the posture is POSTURE_HALF_OPENED, the app UI gets updated for Flex mode. val callback = Consumer<DeviceState> { deviceState -> if (deviceState.posture == DeviceState.POSTURE_HALF_OPENED) { // Display is folded, show Split UX } else { // Display is not folded, show Full Screen UX } } Check out the CodeLab challenge on Flex mode for a more hands-on experience. App continuity While folding and unfolding the device, the app must prevent data loss thus ensuring its continuity. This is achievable by using the onSaveInstanceState() method. First, save the data to retain the current state with onSaveInstanceState(). @Override public void onSaveInstanceState(Bundle savedInstanceState) { //Save the current state } Then, restore the data in the onCreate() function. @Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { if (savedInstanceState != null) { //restore the previous state } } Stopwatch app continuity while unfolding device To have a better understanding of implementing app continuity, see the CodeLab challenge on app continuity. Responsive UI layout To adapt to new form factors such as a diverse aspect ratio, Flex mode, multi-window, and pop-up window, utilize the following guidelines : Design a responsive UI layout for your app using ConstraintLayout. Define the activity of your app as resizable, to ensure the maximum compatibility of your app with both the cover display and the main display of the device. Set the resizableActivity attribute to true in Manifest.xml. <activity android:name=".MainActivity" android:resizeableActivity="true"> … </activity> Responsive layout of the Spotify app Cutout and punch hole of the main display The main display of a Galaxy Z Fold is covered by an area on the top-right side called the “L-cut” whereas the Galaxy Z Fold2 and Fold3 have a punch hole in the upper right side and the Galaxy Z Flip devices have a punch hole in the middle. Some portion of your app’s UI could be covered by the L-cut or the punch hole. Content is covered by the L-cut in a Galaxy Fold device in landscape mode To avoid such a scenario, depending on your UI content style, define a display cutout mode. For example, the content is letterboxed in landscape mode whereas it is rendered into the cutout area in portrait mode by default. Define the display cutout mode in the style.xml as shortEdges so that your content is rendered into the cutout area in both portrait and landscape modes. <item name="android:windowLayoutInDisplayCutoutMode">shortEdges</item> Display cutout in the default mode and the shortEdges mode, respectively Last but not the least, you can test your app on our device cloud, Samsung Remote Test Lab, to make sure you have implemented all the checkpoints discussed in this blog. You can also participate in our Codelab challenges to have a clear understanding of the implementation details. In this blog we have discussed about how to adapt your app for foldable devices. We hope it is a good guide for you to start with. You can also check out Samsung’s official documentation and reach out to our developer community if you have any queries. 16. Samsung Electronics today hosted an immersive art experience at London’s Saatchi Gallery with perceptual artist, Michael Murphy. Together, they unveiled a stunning spiraling installation created using eleven of Samsung’s state-of-the-art, super QN900A Neo QLED TV Infinity Screens. Audiences were transported through the immersive installation to an exclusive performance by electronic music duo, Gorgon City, from the stunning Skywalk Biokovo on Croatia’s Adriatic coast. Experience producers, Cercle, filmed the landmark performance featuring Gorgon City’s never-heard-before track, ‘Skywalk,’ named after the iconic location, which played out across the installation’s super Samsung Neo QLED screens in stunning true-to-life picture. The immersive experience represents the continuation of Samsung’s commitment to celebrating the ever-moving crossroads of art and technology, with the visionary mind of Michael Murphy. On Murphy’s spiral installation, that stood almost twelve feet tall in a darkened room, audiences were teleported to Gorgon City’s exclusive performance, while Cercle’s sweeping camera and cinematography flaunted the rich landscapes of the rocky Biokovo Natural Park on Croatia’s rocky southern coast – all through the all-encompassing lens of the QN900A Neo QLED state-of-the-art 8K Infinity Screens. As Gorgon City’s set unfolded on the striking and complex architectural glass walkway, Murphy’s trademark perceptual deception revealed itself to show the nearly bezel-less, Anti-glare screens, with all eleven working in unison, spiraled to manipulate the eye. Michael Murphy said: “I’m so proud of this installation. To think this is the first time I’ve ever worked with moving images in my art, so the challenge of integrating them onto not just one, but eleven screens – well, it looks and feels amazing. Of course, Cercle’s unbelievable cinematography and the breath-taking picture quality of the Neo QLED made my job easier, not to mention the fact they’re Samsung’s slimmest ever screens, but I’m beyond excited the installation has helped me push my art to the next level. That’s why I’m so glad Samsung and I got to work together for this piece – we’re both pushing for viewers to see the world in a new light. I do it with mind-blowing perceptual tricks, Samsung with their mind-blowing screens.” As Croatia’s vivid blues, oranges and greens swept across the true-to-life picture and the richest, nearly bezel-less color ever seen, audiences weren’t just transported to a set on the Adriatic coast, but thanks to Murphy’s transformational installation, to a different world entirely. “At Samsung, we’ve always tried to push boundaries, and there is no greater boundary to cross than to experience a new and fresh perspective,” said Nathan Sheffield, Samsung’s Head of Visual Display. “That’s why we wanted to work with Michael, because his work has always transcended the boundaries between art and perception. Cercle has done the same with music, cinema and culture. At Samsung we aim to show our customers how expressive, inspiring and colorful the world can be. With Michael, Cercle and the remarkable visual power of the super Neo QLED we’ve made a big step towards our goal.” “Just wow,” said Cercle founder, Derek Barbolla.“We’ve filmed some beautiful scenes worldwide, and we knew the Skywalk video with Gorgon City would be no exception. However, none of the performances we’ve filmed have looked just so true-to-life on screen. Then, when combined with Michael Murphy’s perceptual artistry –it reaches a whole new level. It goes to show – when you entwine music, cinema, art and the world’s best TV, you can create something truly special.” Matt Robson-Scott of Gorgon City said: “It’s been an honor to work with the Samsung and Cercle team. It was such an amazing experience shooting in a such an epic location and we feel like it suits the track perfectly. We were blown away by the way they work and hope everyone loves the video as much as we do”. Samsung’s new, flagship QN900A Neo QLED television, like the immersive experience, delivers a mesmerizing viewing experience with true-to-life picture, rich color and anti-glare technology in the comfort of your home. For superpowered visual technology, only available with the Neo QLED 8K TV, you can truly experience new perspectives. View the full article

  19. Considering accessibility in design and development not only helps you connect with a wider audience, it can also be a catalyst for innovation. Equal accessibility is about finding ways to adapt and adjust your design to create a better user experience for everyone. In the latest installment of our 'Better for All' series, we're looking at how designers can address ableism—discrimination in favor of able-bodied people—by putting accessibility at the center of their work, ultimately creating better designs. Here are some considerations to help you understand accessibility, its scope, and how accessibility can create better user experiences. The Four Pillars of Accessibility To help make the web accessible to people living with disabilities, the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) develops guidelines, technical specifications, and educational resources that are a trusted international standard designers and developers can reference. Their Web Content Accessibility Guidelines are organized around four principles to foster accessibility, known as POUR: perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust. Perceivable is how your content is absorbed by users. For example, information presented visually isn't perceivable to everyone. Operable addresses how users can navigate the content. Certain UI components, like the hover interaction, cannot be operated by someone who can't use a mouse or touch screen. Understandable emphasizes simplicity and consistency. The content you create should be communicated in a way that avoids confusion. Robust promotes access to content by a wide variety of user agents (browsers). It's important that the content is compatible with assistive technology. For more information and best practices to help improve the accessibility of your content, reference the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0. Hierarchy in Typography is Important Your design should allow for information to be absorbed quickly. Good typography establishes a strong visual hierarchy, provides a graphic balance, and sets the overall tone. A text hierarchy that visually calls out key information in larger, bolder text helps to improve the experience for people who have difficulty retaining lots of information or have a visual condition. Create Text Blocks to Improve Readability For people who have difficulty reading or seeing, long lines of text can become a significant barrier to comprehension. Here are some ways to improve readability when dealing with design for long blocks of text. Provide extra space between lines and paragraphs to make it easier to track the next line and to recognize the end of a paragraph. Use several different line breaks, such as space-and-a-half and double-spacing. Create narrow blocks of text to help improve readability. Avoid using justified text which can create uneven enlarged spaces between words, sometimes known as “rivers.” Design Text to Work with the Zoom Function Users with low vision may prefer to have their browser resize text or zoom into page content to make it easier to read. The ability to zoom in 200% supports a wide range of designs and layouts and complements older screen magnifiers. Zooming in above 200% resizes text, images, and layout regions and creates a larger canvas that may require both horizontal and vertical scrolling. Optimize Color Contrast between Foreground and Background The WCAG states that your text should have at least a 4.5:1 contrast ratio to achieve an AA rating and a 7:1 contrast ratio to achieve an AAA rating. The AA rating compensates for the loss in contrast sensitivity usually experienced by users with vision loss equivalent to approximately 20/40 vision, which is common for those roughly 80 years old. There are online tools for checking color contrast, like this one by WebAIM. The AAA rating compensates for users with vision loss equivalent to approximately 20/80 vision. People with more than this degree of vision loss typically use assistive technologies to access their content, which usually have contrast-enhancing and magnification capabilities built in. Design plays a big part in how we perceive our world and improving how we can interact with it. Considering accessibility in your design is an important step towards addressing ableism to build a world where we all feel welcome. We hope you find the advice in this series helpful in shaping your design-thinking, to help you create a more diverse, inclusive, and accessible world. 21. In recent times, we’ve all been spending more and more time at home – a routine change that has meant finding fun alternatives to our usual outdoor activities, including making use of our balconies or gardens. For those who are looking to make the most out of this at-home outdoor lifestyle, Samsung Electronics last May introduced The Terrace, an outdoor TV that can be placed and used outside, along with The Terrace Soundbar. As well as providing resilient versatility thanks to its water and dust resistance, The Terrace features a vivid screen for excellent viewing experiences. Read on for a look at a day in the life of The Terrace at home. Enjoying Your Swim With Your Favorite Media, Worry-Free One of the best ways to stay cool on warmer days is to set up a small pool in the garden for yourself or your children. With other TVs, if you wanted to enjoy your TV while cooling off, the pool would need to be placed far away from the TV to prevent water damage. However, with The Terrace, you can place your TV anywhere you want without having to worry about any splashing affecting it as the outdoor TV has obtained the IP55 certification from the International Electrotechnical Commission for water and dust resistance. What’s more, The Terrace can withstand all kinds of weather conditions, even extreme ones that dip as low as negative 31° to 50° Celsius (~negative 24° to 122° Fahrenheit). Thanks to this durability, you can stream your favorite TV show while relaxing, or put on your kids’ favorite animated show while they enjoy the pool. For those users looking for a summery soundtrack to accompany their pool day, they can take advantage of the rich sound experiences offered by The Terrace Soundbar. Offering 210 watts of sound featuring deep bass tones of the built-in woofer and cutting-edge wide range tweeter, you can enjoy the same sound quality as if you were listening indoors. To make things even more convenient for your at-home poolside fun, all you need to do when playing music through the Soundbar is tap your smartphone onto it in order to connect and play your chosen music instantly. Sharp Picture Quality, Even When the Sun Is Out After a few hours of fun in the sun, it’s time to eat – and back-garden cookouts serve as a fun and easy way to recreate the camping experience at home. While you might be wondering how The Terrace can keep everyone entertained under the bright sun while the food is cooking, the TV in fact features bright picture quality and sharp dark color contrast, making it easy to enjoy a movie even under direct sunlight. The Terrace features a peak brightness of over 4,000 nits and 2,000 nits on average so that users can comfortably enjoy video content even in the middle of the day. Furthermore, The Terrace features high visibility thanks to its anti-reflection technology, which reduces the reflection of light off of its surface, and AI picture quality optimization technology that adjusts the screen’s brightness automatically based on changing light conditions. Thanks to The Terrace’s Tizen OS, you can choose from a wide range of popular TV shows and movies when looking to relax in the garden without needing to connect a separate OTT device by merit of the smart features the Tizen engine offers. Take Your Outdoor Games to the Next Level There’s nothing better than relaxing outside and partaking in a game or two while the weather is still nice after a good meal in the garden – and with The Terrace, you can even enjoy your favorite digital games while still making the most of the weather. The Terrace is the perfect screen on which to easily play games outside, as the TV optimizes its sound and screen levels for your game without you needing to adjust any settings manually. Featuring a motion clarity feature, screen tearing is minimized while playing, making for more seamless and enjoyable experiences. Taking a Trip Down Memory Lane With a Single Tap At the end of a long day enjoying each other’s company, it’s time for the family to get together and take a look back over some precious memories. Thanks to The Terrace’s Tap View1 feature, all you need do is gently tap your smartphone to the side of the TV to share your media on-screen and get straight into reminiscing. Not only does this make it more comfortable for everyone, as there’s no need to crowd around a single smartphone screen, but it also lets you make the most of your photos on the intricate big screen. The Terrace also comes with the Multi View2 feature, which lets you split the TV screen to enjoy multifarious contents at once. This lets you take a look over some past vacation photos on one side of the screen while catching up on your favorite TV series on the other, for example; the possibilities are endless. It was only in the very recent past that we believed personal TVs were limited to the indoor space only. With The Terrace, users can expand the uses of their TV for all kinds of fun activities; why not watch a movie while grilling on the barbeque, listen to music while relaxing in the cool breeze, or enjoy the sunset with a family slideshow? The Terrace and The Terrace Soundbar lets you take your private outdoor experiences to the next level. * Images shown in this article are simulated. 1 The Tap View feature is only available on Samsung Galaxy smartphones offering above Android 8.1. Tap View is available while both TV and smartphone are turned on. 2 The Multi View feature supports screen mirroring-compatible Android devices (Android 4.2 and above) and Airplay 2-compatible devices. Airplay 2 requires iOS 12.3 and above or macOS 10.14.5 and above. Some sources or applications may not support Multi View. View the full article
  22. Now more than ever, streaming has developed to be at the core of home entertainment. New streaming platforms are continuously being released and the industry’s growth is accelerating faster than ever before as more and more people are enjoying their favorite TV shows, movies and more from the comfort of their own homes. Powered by the Tizen OS, Samsung Electronics’ TV lineup provides users with a central hub for seamless streaming experiences. Along with Samsung’s cutting-edge picture quality, state-of-the-art sound and user-friendly OS, the company’s partnerships with leading content providers such as HBO are bringing users’ at-home streaming experiences to the next level. In order to learn more, Samsung Newsroom sat down with Jennifer Mirgorod, Head of Partner Management and Marketing for WarnerMedia, to hear about the state of streaming, the future of the industry and how HBO’s partnership with Samsung is bringing users a truly premium experience. Q: Please introduce yourself and your role at WarnerMedia. A: As head of partnership management and partner marketing, I’m responsible for the distribution and marketing of WarnerMedia’s streaming services including HBO Max, its transactional video business and the linear television networks. I lead the team managing our multichannel video programming distributor partners in North America as well as our global platform partnerships, including with Samsung. Q: Streaming services have seen massive growth over the last year. What are some notable trends the industry has seen over the past year? A: Since my career in media began more than 25 years ago, I’ve witnessed the entirety of the streaming industry’s lifespan. We’ve seen massive increase in its popularity over the years and the global over-the-top services market size is projected to reach $86.8 billion by 2026.1 As more streaming platforms emerge, content is so critically important to any platform. This trend, then, has been of rising importance for ensuring that the most iconic titles – from Warner Bros. and across our entire portfolio – live on HBO Max. The relative scarcity of premium content in our industry has made owning franchises like Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and the DC Universe, among others, has been an incredibly powerful differentiator for WarnerMedia. Q: With more consumers “cord cutting” and moving to OTT services, how do you see the market for premium content playing out over the next decade? A: The past few years have been described as the era of “peak TV”, with hundreds of new television series being released each year, and one thing has remained clear: consumers crave premium content. It’s premium stories that make their way into the zeitgeist and resonate with large audiences, regardless of the platform on which they premiere. HBO has long been the home for exactly that type of content and, with HBO Max, we fully expect to build on that. Q: What changes has HBO made to its platform to promote growth and provide subscribers new experiences? A: There are quite a few things we’ve done both to the product itself as well as our approach to provide the best possible experience to our customers. Throughout HBO Max’s first year, our product team has focused on evolving the app by adding new features to ensure that the platform provides a premium experience that is fitting for the premium content it houses. That means adding new personalization features including “For You” trays, age-targeted kid profiles, improved design, improved content details pages, accessibility features and others. We also took a bold step late last year and decided to release our 2021 Warner Bros. theatrical slate in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day, giving customers the ultimate choice on how they wanted to consume content, which proved to be a solid strategy. Our tech team is also working hard to deliver the best viewing experiences which includes support for HDR10 and 4K streaming. As we regularly update and release new content via HBO Max, you’ll see more and more content available in these formats. Q: What have been some of the biggest benefits of HBO Max being available on Samsung Smart TVs? A: There have been plenty of benefits we’ve found in partnering with Samsung and leaning into Tizen’s distinct operating system. Thanks to Tizen OS, Samsung’s TV and projectors allow us to take HBO Max into many different large-format surfaces and enable high-quality as well as varied interactions with users. It also offers an integrated, streamlined experience for users for more enjoyable viewing. The HBO Max app will be featured on the launch bar for 2021 and 2022 televisions for convenient access, and we’re leveraging the strength of Tizen’s Universal Guide feature in those regions where it’s available. We have also deepened our integration of HBO Max content into Tizen’s search functionality to provide a more seamless experience for customers from start to finish. Q: Is there anything you can share on the HBO Max roadmap that, along with Samsung’s Smart TVs, will help provide consumers with more valuable experiences? A: Samsung is a valued partner of ours and we’re looking forward to building on a solid foundation we’ve built together since the launch of HBO Max. Samsung customers can expect key updates to the app experience in the coming weeks including the addition of 4K, Dolby Atmos and 5.1 audio. Also on the roadmap are enhanced functionality with Bixby, as well as the addition of ‘Continue Watching’ and ‘Personalized Preview’ features that will help to create an even more seamless and customized viewing experience. Q: Lastly, are there any exciting movies and shows that HBO Max subscribers can look forward to later this year? A: Absolutely. We are excited about a number of new series and movies set for release throughout the second half of this year and plans for expansion into new markets. Our team is excited about the recently launched Gossip Girl series reboot, as well as the original film No Sudden Move, plus new Max originals The Sex Lives of College Girls from Mindy Kaling and the next chapter of Sex and the City called And Just Like That. There’s also the return of HBO-favorites including Succession, Insecure and Curb Your Enthusiasm. On the movie front, new Warner Bros. theatrical releases have been and will be released on the platform on the same days as theaters with titles including Space Jam: A New Legacy, The Suicide Squad, The Many Saints of Newark and Dune, among others. 1 Over the Top (OTT) Services Market Latest Industry Trends, Size, Share, Statistics, Applications and Competition Strategies by 2028, Fortune Business Insights View the full article
  23. When you design with diversity, equity and inclusion in mind you're not only doing the right thing, but you're also creating more opportunities for growth. Through better design you can improve inclusivity and make diversity the standard. In this installment of our 'Better for All' series, Eglantina Hasaj from Cogul Planet and Manpreet Kaur from Themes Digital share how they've been able to create more inclusive designs that speak to more people. What does diversity, equity and inclusion mean to you? Eglantina: It's part of a well-geared machine. Incorporating these principles into your work and environment makes the process pleasant; it also as opens new opportunities for your business. Manpreet: It means to include and respect people with different ethnicity, geography, culture, and beliefs to have a more inclusive society. How do you incorporate inclusive design into your work? Eglantina: Our store provides content globally. Therefore, we study and have concept meetings to develop the most appropriate, inclusive designs that fit the national, racial, and religious cultures of our audiences. We always try not to offend or hurt anyone. Manpreet: There are two approaches. First is to not design stuff which promotes non-equality and the second is to create designs that promote inclusiveness. When designing new Themes, we make sure not to design anything which would offend any groups of people or individual beliefs. We also create multiple Themes with diversity in mind. What inspired you to start making inclusive designs? Eglantina: We've always thought about how to make our Themes more inclusive for our audiences. When we see a group of people embracing what is right for them, it inspires us to create more inclusive designs and makes us feel part of the group. Manpreet: Being conscious about our surroundings and society at large, we saw a lot of bias towards certain sets of people. This inspired us to do what we could to create inclusivity. Just because a person believes in a particular way of living or comes from a different background, should not be criteria to exclude them. What are some of your inclusion-focused designs for sale in the Galaxy Store? Eglantina: The "Black Lives Matter: Rainbow" Theme was created last year in response to the BLM movement that was happening in the US. We saw a very positive response from that inclusive design. Manpreet: A couple of examples are our Themes "Black History" for Black History Month and "Rainbow" for Pride. Where do you source best practices and resources for inclusive design work? Eglantina: We stay up-to-date with news, trends, movements, etc. through social media and news channels that provide information from around the world. Another source we take into consideration are comments and messages from Samsung Galaxy users. How has designing with DE&I in mind influenced your career? Eglantina: It makes you a more creative designer, since you are exposed to endless inspiration. Manpreet: It makes your work as a designer more satisfying and fulfilling. Do you have any advice on how others can design with DE&I in mind? Eglantina: Understanding and keeping an open mind about other peoples' ideas and views in your workspace or even among your audience will help you develop a strong presence as a designer. Manpreet: Make it about the greater good. When we all work to promote DE&I, we can make this world a better place. Thanks to Eglantina and Manpreet for sharing their insights on designing for DE&I. Considering diversity in your design is an important step towards building a world where we all feel welcome. 24. Galaxy Unpacked brought exciting new product announcements for Galaxy Watch4, Galaxy Z Fold3, and Galaxy Z Flip3. In this post, we'll go into more detail on how you can create delightful experiences for these devices in your own apps and watch faces. Galaxy Watch4 / One UI Watch The new Galaxy Watch4 announcement shines the spotlight on the new collaborative wearable platform from Samsung and Google. This change from Tizen to Wear OS opens doors for developers and designers to create exciting new designs. As with earlier generations of Galaxy Watch models, designers can create beautiful work without coding. For Galaxy Watch4, we've introduced Watch Face Studio. Designers who built for Tizen-based devices using Galaxy Watch Studio will recognize how this new tool works. For creators with existing designs built with Galaxy Watch Studio, there is also a tool to convert from the Tizen .tpk format to the Wear OS .aab format. This tool is called Galaxy Watch Studio Converter. As there are differences between Tizen and Wear OS, some functions are not supported in the conversion process. For support on these tools, please visit the Samsung Developer Forums for Watch Face Studio and Watch Face Studio Converter. Developers who are interested in creating applications for the new wearable platform can find more information at the Android Developers site. Galaxy Z Series Galaxy Unpacked brought news of two exciting evolutions of Samsung phones with the Galaxy Z Fold3 and the Galaxy Z Flip3. For mobile developers, these devices provide opportunities to bring a first-class experience to users of their apps by utilizing unique features of the Z Series hardware and software. Possibly the most notable addition to the Galaxy Z Fold3 is the S Pen, which had previously been available to owners of Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab devices. Developers can integrate the S Pen Remote and Air Actions into their apps. Code Labs with samples are available to get you started. To check if S Pen is available on a device, this block of code can be used. SpenRemote spenRemote = SpenRemote.getInstance(); if (!spenRemote.isConnected()) { spenRemote.connect(getContext(), new SpenRemote.ConnectionResultCallback() { @Override public void onSuccess(SpenUnitManager manager) { } @Override public void onFailure(int error) { } }); } Another feature of the Galaxy Z Fold3 that developers can access is the inner display, activated when the device is opened. Developers who want to provide a premium experience for these devices should ensure their apps provide continuity across the displays while interrupting their users as little as possible. Samsung provides a Code Lab and sample code to ensure that your apps provide the best experience possible. The Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3 also provide a unique featured called Flex Mode. Flex Mode is activated when a user opens the Z Fold3 or Z Flip3 screen half-way. In this configuration, apps are notified to alter their appearance to give the best experience. As with other new features, a Code Lab with samples is available on this site.
